See & test drive your favorite EVs at Drive Electric Earth Month, all April

It’s that time of year again, time for events across the country to show off electric vehicles at Drive Electric Earth Month. Drive Electric Earth Month is an offshoot of Drive Electric Week, a long-running annual tradition hosting meetups mostly in the US, but also occasionally in other countries. It started as Drive Electric Earth Day, but since not every event can happen on the same day, they went ahead and extended it to encompass “Earth Month” events that happen across the month of April. It’s all organized by Plug In America, the Sierra Club, the Electric Vehicle Association, EV Hybrid Noire, and Drive Electric USA. Events consist of general Earth Day-style community celebrations, EV Ride & Drives where you can test drive several EVs in one place, and opportunities to talk to EV owners and ask them questions about what it’s like to live with an EV, away from the pressure of a dealership. This month, there are 180 events registered across the US and 2 in Canada (including one online webinar about things to …

Mom charged after police said she had 8-year-old drive while she was passed out

A St. Louis woman who officials say made her 8-year-old son drive, with her toddler in the backseat, while she was passed out has been charged with child endangerment. St. Louis prosecutors filed two counts of felony child endangerment against Latonya Mayes-Gale, 28, on Monday, the day of her arrest. One of the counts pertains to the boy; the other concerns her 3-year-old, who was unsecured in the back seat, according to charging documents. Mayes-Gale was arrested and booked into jail after an officer spotted a vehicle heading west in an eastbound lane at a downtown St. Louis intersection, police said in an affidavit filed in support of her arrest. “Defendant couldn’t drive the motor vehicle and instructed [the 8-year-old] to drive the motor vehicle for her,” the affidavit said. “Defendant was in the rear of the motor vehicle unconscious and Victim# 2, who is three years of age, was unsecured in the backseat.” NBC affiliate KSDK of St. Louis reported the incident took place about 4 a.m. No injuries were reported. The complaint alleges …

Warp drive technology may be closer than we thought

First introduced in Star Trek, warp drive proposed travel at speeds exceeding that of light, thereby challenging Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. (CREDIT: Creative Commons) From the moment the sci-fi TV series Star Trek aired, it has captivated audiences, leaving them with a myriad of questions. For decades, the series has masterfully blended elements of real-life science with fiction, sparking innovations that have become integral to our everyday lives. Among the groundbreaking concepts presented in the series, warp drive stands out. It captured the imagination of viewers worldwide. This idea, first introduced in Star Trek, proposed travel at speeds exceeding that of light, thereby challenging Einstein’s Theory of Relativity which asserts that nothing can travel faster than light. A ring-shaped warp drive device could transport a football-shape starship (center) to effective speeds faster than light. The concept was first proposed by Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre. He created a bubble within space-time that would twist distances making it possible for …

Tesla to cut around 15,000 jobs under Musk drive for ‘productivity’ – reports | Business News

Tesla is cutting 10% of its global workforce in a bid to reduce costs and bolster productivity, it has been reported. The electric vehicle maker, founded and run by Elon Musk, was yet to comment on a story earlier on Monday by Electrek that it was to axe about 15,000 personnel. The tech publication said the cuts were revealed in an internal memo – also seen by the Reuters news agency. It added that managers had been tasked earlier this year with identifying key personnel. The company, which had more than 140,000 staff at the end of 2023, has been struggling with soft demand for its electric vehicles. Challenges have included the squeeze on budgets from the cost of living crisis and the impact of higher interest rates across much of the western world. It has cut prices several times in a bid to woo buyers but its efforts have been hampered by strong competition, mainly from China. Tesla, which is the world’s largest carmaker by stock market value, reported a decline in vehicle deliveries …

Climate change could cause spike in ticks – and drive up Lyme disease cases | UK News

Climate change is “likely” to increase the activity and distribution of ticks in the UK, which could lead to a rise in Lyme disease cases, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). A potentially warmer and more humid climate is expected to result in ticks – which can infect humans with Lyme disease – being more active. In most, but not all cases, a circular or oval “bullseye” shaped rash can be an early symptom of the bacterial infection, usually appearing within one to four weeks. Reported cases have been rising, with a nearly 40% increase in acute cases of Lyme disease last summer. The UKHSA says warmer, more humid temperatures are creating “favourable conditions” for ticks to thrive. It’s expected that mild winters and warmer springs will lengthen the period that ticks are active – increasing the likelihood of tick bites. The latest UKHSA data shows that in England, there were 882 acute cases of the disease between April and September last year, when ticks are most active. That’s compared to 635 cases …

Electric cars save us billions — even people who don’t drive them

Electric cars save us billions — even people who don’t drive them

ABB electric vehicle charging station; via ABB. A new study shows that drivers of electric cars are saving everyone billions of dollars on their monthly electricity bills — even the people who don’t drive EVs! A recent report by a group called Synapse Energy Economics examined how much electric car owners paid for electricity and compared that with the cost for utilities to build, generate, and distribute that electricity. What it found was that, in aggregate, EV drivers provided more than $3 billion in net revenue to the grid between 2011 and 2021. Rapid growth in electric vehicle (EV) adoption has raised the question of how EVs affect the electricity rates paid by all households, including those that do not own EVs. To answer this question, Synapse compared the electric utility revenues from EV charging with utility costs associated with serving EV load, including the costs of utility EV programs. The results of our analysis indicate that, since 2011, EVs have contributed much more in utility revenues than costs. Because of this, EVs have helped …

NASA Picks 3 Companies to Help Astronauts Drive Around the Moon

NASA will be renting some cool wheels to drive around the moon. Space agency officials announced on Wednesday that they have hired three companies to come up with preliminary designs for vehicles to take NASA astronauts around the lunar south polar region in the coming years. After the astronauts return to Earth, these vehicles would be able to self-drive around as robotic explorers, similar to NASA’s rovers on Mars. The self-driving capability would also allow the vehicle to meet the next astronaut mission at a different location. “Where it will go, there are no roads,” Jacob Bleacher, the chief exploration scientist at NASA, said at a news conference on Wednesday. “Its mobility will fundamentally change our view of the moon.” The companies are Intuitive Machines of Houston, which in February successfully landed a robotic spacecraft on the moon; Lunar Outpost of Golden, Colo.; and Venturi Astrolab of Hawthorne, Calif. Only one of the three will actually build a vehicle for NASA and send it to the moon. NASA had asked for proposals of what it …

He Emptied an Entire Crypto Exchange Onto a Thumb Drive. Then He Disappeared

He told the court that he grew his beard down to his clavicle, shaved his head. He said that when he learned about the prosecutor’s indictment—that his brother and sister were charged with fraud, that they would stand trial in a month, and that without Özer they would most likely take the blame for Thodex’s fall and spend the rest of their lives in prison—he had a wild idea: If every claimant were paid back, did a crime ever really happen? He did, in fact, have the Thodex cold wallet on him, he told the judges, though he claims to not remember how much was in it. He asked Erarslan to help him pay back the roughly 2,000 plaintiffs who had lost their money. And they did, in part. In total, while on the run, he paid approximately 185 million lira ($10 million at the time) to more than 1,000 claimants. As Özer tells it, when the cold wallet was empty, he threw it into the Ionian Sea. When he addressed his use of other …

Sex Differences in Sex Drive

Sex Differences in Sex Drive

We Are More Similar Than Different Sexually, But… People’s sexual needs are more similar than different—for example, most of us want to feel connected to, desired by, and attracted to our romantic partner. Nonetheless, many hetero couples struggle with desire discrepancy. While there is much variability among women’s experience of sex drive, in general, men in long-term relationships score higher on measures of sexual desire and behavior than women (Frankenbach et al., 2022). In fact, to my knowledge, there is no research study demonstrating otherwise. Of course, some hetero women in long-term relationships have a stronger drive than their partners. In general, however, it’s more common for his drive to be higher. Robby Fontanesi/Shutterstock Female Desire in Short- Vs. Long-Term Relationships The fact that women demonstrate a lower sex drive than men is not necessarily women’s experience, however. That’s because sex differences in sex drive are less evident in short-term and uncommitted relationships. Examples of uncommitted relationships include dating, friends with benefits, affairs (even long-term affairs), or when returning to dating after a divorce. In …
