Kendrick Lamar to headline Super Bowl halftime show after number one singles and Drake feud | Ents & Arts News

Fresh off a number-one single and a feud with Drake, Kendrick Lamar has announced he will perform at next year’s Super Bowl. The Humble hitmaker will take to the stage during the halftime show at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 9 February. In a video announcing the news on YouTube, Lamar is seen standing in front of an American flag as he shoots footballs out of an automatic passing machine. “You know it’s only one opportunity to win a championship. No round twos,” he says. “I won’t want you to miss it. “Meet me in New Orleans. February 9, 2025. Wear your best dress, too, even if you watch it from home.” In a statement, the 17-time Grammy award-winning rapper added: “Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.” Rapper Jay-Z, whose company Roc Nation works with the NFL to choose the halftime show performer, called Lamar a “once-in-a-generation artist”. He added: “His deep love for …

The Drake-Kendrick Lamar Rap Beef Is Burning Out

The Drake-Kendrick Lamar Rap Beef Is Burning Out

When USC professor and hip-hop scholar Todd Boyd remembers hearing Tupac Shakur’s scathing diss track “Hit ‘Em Up,” he knew one thing: “This is not going to end well.” The West Coast anthem was released in June 1996 and Shakur viciously took aim at his East Coast rivals, including the Notorious B.I.G. with claims — through strikingly chosen words — that he slept with Biggie’s wife, R&B singer Faith Evans. The rap war escalated to new heights, and three months later Shakur was shot to death in Las Vegas, with some wondering (though apparently incorrectly) whether the beef had anything to with it. And a few months after that, Biggie was shot dead in Los Angeles though his killer never apprehended. Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s current rap beef has Boyd reflecting on the past.  “This can’t end well. It can’t. The possibility of it going wrong is very high,” the author of Rapper’s Deluxe: How Hip Hop Made the World tells The Hollywood Reporter. “To accuse someone of being guilty of domestic violence [or] accuse …

Drake v Kendrick Lamar’s rap beef has turned very ugly – who is benefiting from such a spectacle? | Nels Abbey

The sight of two (or more) people tearing chunks out of each other is one of humanity’s first and most enduring forms of entertainment. The sheer excitement, the intrigue, the unpredictability, the adrenaline rush, the bloodlust: who can resist? And in exchange for their courage, discipline and possibly even their lives, we reward our gladiators handsomely. It’s payday for the poetic, profit-seeking, pride-protecting feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, easily the landmark competitive event of our time. Rappers are our modern gladiators (and poet laureates). And thanks to social media and the fact that every major media organisation worth its salt – the BBC, the New York Times, the Guardian – has dedicated prominent real estate to cover and contextualise the beef blow-by-blow, track-by-track, the world is their colosseum. Are you not entertained? We see all the modern tools of warfare deployed: high- and low-tech espionage, infiltration of enemy camps, artificial intelligence (Drake released a record with AI-generated verses from Snoop Dogg and the late Tupac Shakur, both, like Lamar, west coast icons). There has …

Intruder Detained Outside Drake’s Toronto Mansion One Day After Shooting

Intruder Detained Outside Drake’s Toronto Mansion One Day After Shooting

An intruder was detained in Toronto on Wednesday after allegedly attempting to gain access to Drake‘s mansion. The incident comes one day after the rapper’s security guard was shot outside the same residence. “Officers were called after a person attempted to gain access to the property,” a police spokesperson told CityNews. “Officers were called after a person attempted to gain access to the property,” the Toronto Police Department told Toronto’s CityNews. “The person was apprehended under the Mental Health Act.” No other details on the suspect were made available. On Tuesday, Toronto Police posted on X, formerly Twitter, that the shooting, which occurred at Bayview Avenue and Lawrence Avenue in the city’s Bridle Path district, left one man with “serious injuries” which had to be treated at nearby Sunnybrook Hospital. Inspector Paul Krawczyk of the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force said during a press conference outside Drake’s home that officers were called to the residence just after 2 a.m. Tuesday morning. “That person was working apparently as a security guard at the residence. He …

Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake Beef Crashed the Genius Website

Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake Beef Crashed the Genius Website

Cole Swain was scrolling through his phone one morning before school last week when he received an alert from YouTube. It was 8:24 a.m. in Los Angeles, where Mr. Swain is a university student, and Kendrick Lamar had just released “Euphoria,” a highly anticipated diss track targeting Drake in the escalating showdown between the two rappers. As Mr. Swain’s group chats and social media feeds blew up, he logged onto Genius, a website where users can transcribe and annotate lyrics to help explain their meaning. A volunteer editor for the site and a fan of Lamar’s, Mr. Swain was ready to dig into the track. But Genius was apparently not ready for Mr. Swain and the crush of visitors. After nearly two weeks of silence after Drake’s diss record, Lamar’s response on April 30 drove swarms of traffic to Genius, causing it to crash temporarily just as fans were clamoring to pore over what the artist had to say. “This is crazy,” Mr. Swain, a 19-year-old who is studying bioengineering at the University of California, …

The Brutal Catharsis of Drake vs. Kendrick

The Brutal Catharsis of Drake vs. Kendrick

Scapegoating is one of humankind’s primal rituals, dating back to the Book of Leviticus, in which God commanded the prophet Aaron to lay hands on a goat, confess the sins of his tribe, and then send the animal into the desert. Throughout centuries and across cultures, the historian René Girard once argued, warring factions have settled disputes by agreeing upon a figure to collectively blame—a resolution that is ugly and unfair but, more than anything, cathartic. Perhaps this tradition helps explain what’s been so satisfying about watching two of the 21st century’s most important musicians, Drake and Kendrick Lamar, try to destroy each other. The rap feud that has engulfed public attention in recent weeks has been litigated in breathtaking, twisty-turny songs packed with very 2020s references—to Ozempic, disinformation, AI, Taylor Swift, and elite pedophile rings. These two superstars have leveled accusations so nasty that cancellation, today’s standard punishment for celebrity wrongdoing, hardly seems sufficient. Thus far, the consensus is that Lamar has “won” the war—but in that case, Drake’s defeat is really what’s significant. …

Drake and Kendrick Lamar don’t get that women’s pain isn’t a punchline | Tayo Bero

Drake and Kendrick Lamar don’t get that women’s pain isn’t a punchline | Tayo Bero

Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been battling it out for days in a vicious diss-track feud, but what started out as a sparring of wits between two of the world’s biggest rappers has quickly devolved into an excruciating game of who can expose the most damning thing about the other. On his songs Meet the Grahams and Not Like Us, Lamar addresses Drake’s well-documented history of disturbing and inappropriate alleged behavior with minors, while on Family Matters, Drake has revived years-old domestic violence accusations against Lamar. Both Drake and Lamar deny any wrongdoing. At one point, Drake even goes as far as to make fun of what he seems to have misunderstood to be a story about Lamar’s own experience of sexual abuse. (On 2022’s Mother I Sober, Lamar raps about child sexual abuse, which Drake assumes Lamar experienced himself.) What are we even doing here? In the course of the nasty back-and-forth, they’ve made women – women who are possibly survivors of sexual abuse, harassment or domestic violence – the collateral damage of their …
