Should You Be Using Pet Laundry Detergent For Your Dog? Vets Weigh In

With all the content available online these days, it can be hard to figure out what’s real and what’s hype. While we don’t always have the answers, we have a direct line to people who do — which is why we present to you our series The Internet Made Me Ask, where we have experts break down the truth about some of the buzziest trends (and questions) on our timelines, like how often you should wash jeans. Between muddy paws, drool, and the occasional accident, your dog’s bed, blankets, and toys can get dirty fast. And if you’ve shopped for laundry supplies lately, you may have noticed a growing number of detergents made specifically for pets, with promises to tackle odors and stains while being gentler on your dog’s skin. But are they actually any different from the detergent you already use? Most of us aren’t looking to add another expense to our bills for household essentials. So I spoke to two veterinarians to find out what sets pet laundry detergents apart from regular ones, …

Large dog breeds die younger. Biologists think they finally know why.

Large dog breeds die younger. Biologists think they finally know why.

A first-of-its-kind genetic analysis of dog breeds presents the clearest insights into why larger dogs rarely outlive their smaller relatives. According to a team of biologists writing in the journal Science, the longstanding size–age correlation is likely due to “jumping genes” that inevitably begin sowing chaos inside canine DNA as dogs get older. Most dog owners are aware of an unfortunate rule of thumb—the bigger the pooch, the shorter the lifespan. While this trend isn’t always the case, breeds like the Great Dane generally don’t stick around as long as smaller relatives like golden retrievers or even pugs. Larger dogs are also much more prone to age-related health issues and diseases. These canine traits starkly contrast with what biologists often see in other mammals, where larger species like whales frequently live much longer than tiny animals such as rodents. But these mysteries make your favorite furry friend’s genetics incredibly intriguing to researchers. “Dogs provide an extraordinary model for understanding aging because they show dramatic variation in lifespan within a single species,” explained study co-author and …

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time review – a fun and inventive sensory assault

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time review – a fun and inventive sensory assault

The most alarming moment in Mark Haddon’s young adult novel is when Christopher Boone, a 15-year-old on the autism spectrum, flees his Swindon home for London. After a perilous train journey, he arrives at Paddington station and is overwhelmed. The book’s text becomes a barrage of fonts and type sizes to express the information overload: announcements, shop signs and adverts all shouting for his attention. That sense of cacophony, a sensory assault of products, people and places, characterises Ned Bennett’s ambitious new staging of the Simon Stephens adaptation for Birmingham Rep and Melting Pot. Eleanor Bull’s bare stage, an outsize studio in white, alternates between clean geometric lines, such as the row of pastel-coloured houses that form a picture-book street, and more detailed high-definition projections. Hayley Egan’s excellent video design lays out everyday objects – wrench, tampon, wooden spoon – for careful study as if in a Dorling Kindersley illustrated hardback. It makes the familiar seem strange and demanding. The busy percussive score by Giles Thomas only offers more to process, while a multitasking ensemble …

The Obamas’ family dog Sunny dies, the former president says

WASHINGTON — The Obamas’ pet dog Sunny has died, former President Obama said Wednesday. Sunny, a 13-year-old Portuguese water dog the Obamas got in 2013 while living in the White House, died Tuesday. “We got Sunny at the start of our second term in the White House, and all of us — including our first dog, Bo — immediately fell in love,” he said on social media. He remembered Sunny as athletic, full of energy and protective of Bo. Despite Sunny’s breed, she hated getting wet. “We will miss her terribly, and imagine she’s with her big brother now, making sure he’s okay,” Obama said. Bo died in 2021. While many presidents have kept dogs as companions, President Trump does not have any pets at the White House. George H.W. Bush’s English springer spaniel, Millie, “wrote” the bestseller “Millie’s Book.” President Clinton’s chocolate Labrador retriever, Buddy, was in the family as Clinton weathered the scandal over his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. George W. Bush’s Scottish terrier, Barney, had an official web page and starred …

Jeff Koons’s Iconic Balloon Dog Is Now a Watch

Jeff Koons’s Iconic Balloon Dog Is Now a Watch

Hublot might have the deepest Rolodex in watches. The Swiss maker works with enough icons across industries—from soccer star Kylian Mbappé and fashion designer Samuel Ross to BTS idol Jung Kook and new wave legends Depeche Mode—to throw one hell of a house party. But the brand always seems to do its best work with acclaimed visual artists like Takashi Murakami, Sang Bleu, and Richard Orlinski. And today, that knack for blending art and watches just reached its apex, thanks to the release of a new Hublot collaboration with Jeff Koons. In Koons, Hublot has found a bedfellow that’s every bit as audacious and over-the-top as they are. The duo has come together to create the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog, a new watch based on Koons’s most famous sculptures, which reimagine the child’s party favor as sleek, enormous metallic structures. The inflated-looking timepiece comes in three shiny colors: red, blue, and silver, limited to 200 pieces each. At $25,100 a pop, the watches are an absolute steal when you consider the eight-figure sums that Koons’s …

Dog leaps into Shasta Lake and man jumps in to save it. Dog survives, but the man does not

A man died in Northern California’s Shasta Lake after attempting to save a dog who had gone into the water Friday morning, authorities said. Geordan White, 60, of Redding was found dead after he attempted to rescue the animal who had jumped from a boat White was on, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said. In a news release, officials said an unidentified person who reported a possible drowning said White appeared to have an “unknown emergency” after entering the state’s largest reservoir to save the animal. That person, who eventually saved the dog, said White couldn’t hold onto a flotation device thrown to him and disappeared under the water in the Bailey Cove boat launch area. A dive team located White’s body Friday afternoon and authorities will conduct an autopsy, according to the sheriff’s office. In its news release, the sheriff’s office extended condolences to White’s family and reminded the public to wear flotation devices while boating. Source link

Though the hustle and bustle of modern life makes multitasking more appealing than ever, distracted dog walking can put the pooch and its owner in dangerous spots. It may also contribute to piles of abandoned, unscooped poop. That last point comes from a new study published in the journal Society & Natural Resources by researchers at the University of Surrey in England. The team spent 40 hours observing dog walkers across several sites in the Surrey Hills National Landscape southwest of London, to see how they actually behaved on walks. On 11 different occasions, they spotted owners so absorbed in their phone’s enticing …
