Scholz and Macron to hold secret dinner in Paris ahead of Xi’s visit – POLITICO

[ad_1] Scholz and Macron have repeatedly clashed in recent years, most recently in February when the French president opened the door to potentially sending ground troops to Ukraine, which the chancellor strongly rejected. A key topic of the discussion will be the visit of Xi, who arrives in France on Sunday for three days before heading to Serbia and Hungary. The dinner will be a chance for Scholz to brief Macron about his meeting with Xi in Beijing last month. Scholz and Macron also disagree on the potential imposition of EU tariffs on subsidized Chinese electric vehicles. According to the German Marshall Fund’s Noah Barkin, who first reported on the dinner, Macron will try to convince the chancellor to join him for his meeting with Xi next week, alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Another likely dinner topic will be EU politics, particularly defense and its financing. Macron is strongly pushing for so-called defense bonds, which would involve the joint European issuing of debt to bankroll military investments. Scholz has so far rejected …

King Charles hosts private dinner for London Clinic staff at Clarence House – details

[ad_1] King Charles and Queen Camilla held a private dinner for staff from the hospital where both the monarch and his daughter-in-law the Princess of Wales were recently treated.  The intimate event for staff at The London Clinic took place at Clarence House in London on Tuesday evening, and followed a reception for the hospital’s employees.  Earlier in the day, Charles met cancer patients in his return to royal duties following his diagnosis and treatment. He also had his own treatment before the dinner took place, saying during the engagement: “I’ve got to have my treatment this afternoon as well.” You may also likeWATCH: King Charles undertakes first public-facing royal engagement since cancer diagnosis Nonetheless, the King appeared to be in great spirits as he visited University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre longside his loyal wife, speaking to medical specialists and patients during the outing. The pet I’ll never forget: Brighton Yellow, the budgie that interrupted dinner parties chirping, ‘Right! That’s enough!’ | Life and style

[ad_1] Budgies are supposed to be boring, manageable pets. I have no doubt that when my extremely busy parents took me to the pet shop and let me pick out a bird for my seventh birthday, they imagined they were swerving the time commitment of looking after a cat, or a dog, or even a rabbit when I lost interest. But the neon-yellow lutino budgerigar that I took home with me was not your average featherball. Brighton Yellow, as I named him with typical seven-year-old sophistication, was an absolute riot who would not be confined to his cage. He was proof that you often get more than you bargain for when you adopt a pet. Brighton was unusually intelligent and eternally desperate for novelty and stimulation. Once my patient father had tamed him, getting him comfortable with sitting on our hands and letting us boop his feathered head with a finger, he would ride around on my shoulder like a miniature parrot. After I got home from school, he would shout at me until I …

[ad_1] Stepping out in style in Washington, D.C., as a chic celeb couple! Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris made their red carpet debut together on Saturday at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, as the cut couple posed for photos on the press line. Harris and Bush both wore black ensembles that featured matching golden spike studs, in coordinating looks from Harbison Studio. The One Tree Hill alum wore a strapless gown adorned with floral buttons, while Harris shined in a textured black jacket and black slacks. DREW ANGERER/AFP via Getty Images Their red carpet debut comes just over a month after they made their first public appearance together at the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s 32nd annual Academy Awards viewing party in West Hollywood, on March 10. A source told ET at the time, “Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris showed up to the Elton …

Glitzy Parties and Gaza Protests Collide at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner

[ad_1] Chef and restaurateur José Andrés was in the house, as was Bill Nye, sipping a martini near the back of the room. I asked him what he’s been up to this weekend. “Networking for the betterment of humankind,” he told me. “We’re talking about how we’re going to use our platforms in media to engage people in the challenge of climate change.” Fair enough. So what’s the best thing he’d seen all night? “My wife,” he said. L-R: Dr. Anthony Fauci; Kellyanne Conway; Desi Lydic, Jordan Klepper, and Tammy Haddad; and Sen. Amy Klobuchar and John Bessler. While some events come and go, veteran TV producer Tammy Haddad’s annual garden brunch is, apparently, forever. The event began in Haddad’s backyard 31 years ago and is now held at a Georgetown home owned by venture capitalist Mark Ein, a co-owner of the Washington Commanders—which would explain why someone dressed as the team’s mascot, a six-foot-tall hog named Major Tuddy, was greeting people as they made their way into the main tent, which was particularly packed …

Biden stole the White House correspondents’ dinner by dishing it out and taking it in return

[ad_1] The White House correspondents’ dinner, also known as the “nerd prom,” is a century-old event where journalists, politicians and celebrities share laughs over friendly jabs and food — held this year at Hilton Washington, in Washington D.C.  The comedian on site, “SNL” alum Colin Jost, had some competition during the packed event: President Joe Biden, who came correct in full “Joe Cool” mode. Aviators likely on hand to shield himself from any heat coming his way via the jokesters in the room. And both of them did way better than Matt Friend, a warm-up comedian who got crickets and then, worse, groans from the crowd with way too soon jokes about the Trump courthouse self-immolator and Kristi Noem shooting her puppy.  Last night marks the first time in six years that the president has physically attended the dinner. “It’s understandable,” Biden said. “We had a horrible plague, followed by two years of COVID.” Clearly the first of many swipes at Trump.  The president had the crowd in stitches when he put out the disclaimer that all attendees, including the …

‘Rise Up’: Biden Issues Urgent Call On Trump Threat At White House Correspondents’ Dinner

[ad_1] President Joe Biden made a number of jabs at Donald Trump before shifting his tone to address what journalists have to take “seriously” about the former president at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday. Biden — toward the end of his speech to the D.C. crowd — reflected on his address marking the 3rd anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021 attack where he noted that Americans must answer “whether democracy is still” America’s most “sacred cause” this year. “The defeated former president has made no secret of his attack on our democracy. He said he wants to be a dictator on day one, and so much more. He tells supporters he is their revenge and retribution. When in God’s name you ever heard another president say something like that?” Biden said. He continued, “And he promised a bloodbath when he loses again. We have to take this seriously. Eight years ago, you could’ve written [it] off as just Trump talk but no longer. Not after January 6. I’m sincerely not asking you …

‘Stormy weather’: Biden skewers Trump at White House correspondents’ dinner | US elections 2024

[ad_1] Joe Biden has shown no mercy to Donald Trump with a series of barbed jokes about his election rival, telling a gathering of Washington’s political and media elites: “I’m a grown man running against a six-year-old.” The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner on Saturday night provided the ideal platform for Biden to continue a recent run of taking the fight to Trump with more aggressive rhetoric, cutting humour and personal insults. But the jovial mood inside the room contrasted sharply with raucous demonstrations outside the Washington Hilton hotel. Hundreds of protesters shouted “Shame on you!” at White House officials, journalists and celebrities as they arrived at the dinner, condemning Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza and the media’s coverage of it. As speculation about a debate between the two men intensifies, Biden – wearing tuxedo and black tie – opened his roast with a direct but joking focus on Trump, calling him “sleepy Don”, in reference to a nickname Trump had given the president previously. “The 2024 election is in full swing …
