Doctors worry that iodine deficiency, a dietary problem from the past, is coming back

Doctors worry that iodine deficiency, a dietary problem from the past, is coming back

NEW YORK —  The 13-year-old boy came to the clinic with a rapidly ballooning neck. Doctors were puzzled. Testing ruled out their first suspicion. But further tests pinpointed what they — and the boy — had been missing: iodine. A century ago, iodine deficiency affected kids across large swaths of the country. It essentially disappeared after some food makers started adding it to table salt, bread and some other foods, in one of the great public health success stories of the 20th century. But today, people are getting less iodine because of changes in diet and food manufacturing. Although most people are still getting enough, researchers have increasingly been reporting low levels of iodine in pregnant women and other people, raising concerns about an impact on their newborns. And there is also a very small, but growing, number of reports of iodine deficiency in kids. “This needs to be on people’s radar,” said Dr. Monica Serrano-Gonzalez, a Brown University doctor who treated the boy in 2021 in Providence, Rhode Island. What is iodine? Iodine is …

The Real-Life Diet of Adam Devine, Who Wants to Look Like a 50-Year-Old Pilates Mom

The Real-Life Diet of Adam Devine, Who Wants to Look Like a 50-Year-Old Pilates Mom

Before, I’d be like, “I worked out all week. I can party all weekend and have 15 beers, nachos, pizza.” Then you’ve kind of blown your whole week. You can still do that now. But if you track it, you know you had a couple pieces of pizza; don’t have six pieces of pizza and five beers. You can have two pieces of pizza, two beers, and call it a day. This is something that I think a lot of young men need to hear. There’s a pervasive thought out there that as long as you’re working out, you can kind of eat whatever. You can, to an extent. There’s just different seasons of life. Sometimes you’re like, “You know what? I’m going to care less for the next few months. I’m on vacation. I’m in Italy. I have to live my life!” That’s how I felt when my wife was pregnant. I kept joking that my goal was to be bigger than she was, and I succeeded. Did I win the race? Yeah, I …

Parents who forced ‘extreme’ vegan diet on toddler and buried his body in garden jailed

A couple have been jailed for causing or allowing the death of their three-year-old son after forcing him to endure an “extreme” vegan diet. Abiyah Yasharahyalah died from a respiratory illness while suffering from fractures, severe malnutrition, rickets, anaemia, stunted growth and severe dental decay. Jurors heard Tai and Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah, 42 and 43, kept the boy’s body in their bed for eight days, embalmed him and then buried him in a shallow grave in their garden in early 2020. He wasn’t found for more than two years. The jury was told the couple shunned mainstream society in favour of their own “kingdom” in Handsworth, Birmingham, and pushed a restrictive vegan diet. Prosecutors said it would have been obvious Abiyah was in considerable pain and neither parent could explain why they didn’t get help. The trial was told instead of contacting NHS the couple tried to treat their son’s final illness with garlic and ginger. The couple’s diet largely consisted of nuts, raisins and soya milk and they were both “extremely thin” when they were …

MIND diet slows cognitive decline in older adults, but effects vary by race

MIND diet slows cognitive decline in older adults, but effects vary by race

A new study published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia provides evidence that the MIND diet—a hybrid of the Mediterranean and DASH diets—may help slow cognitive decline in older adults, though its effects vary by race. While both Black and White participants showed benefits, White adults needed only moderate adherence to the diet to see improvements, whereas Black adults required stricter adherence. Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are growing public health concerns, particularly for underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. Black and Hispanic older adults have higher rates of dementia than their White counterparts, often due to a combination of socioeconomic disparities, healthcare access issues, and vascular risk factors. While dietary patterns like the Mediterranean, DASH, and MIND diets are known to benefit cognitive health, most existing research has focused on predominantly White populations. This new study aimed to investigate whether the MIND diet’s protective effects against cognitive decline apply across diverse racial groups and whether benefits differ within specific racial and gender subgroups. “I am a trained nutritionist and a nutritional epidemiologist and was always …

The Real-Life Diet of Lil Dicky, Who Is Careful to Avoid Salt Bloat on Set

So for the past year, I’ve just been trying to loosen up my body and stretch and do these really light exercises that are designed to, you know, improve core strength. But by no means am I like, you know, the Sexiest Man of the Year trying to create a body for the cover. I’m actually just trying to go through a day without feeling dull back pain. Hey, don’t rule that out. The Sexiest Man of the Year title could be coming. You have no idea. I’m not ruling that out at all. I feel optimistic. I feel like it’s now or never for me, and I’m going to dedicate the next three years to getting the type of body that would earn that cover. But I think, you know, the first thing I gotta do is just rebuild my lower back strength. So after you’ve lived on oatmeal for hours, what are you doing for lunch? If I’m shooting, one beautiful thing about it that I just love is that they’ll be like …

Learn more I attended yoga classes to help replicate Meghan Markle’s lifestyle choices (Image: Hanisha Sethi) Meghan Markle once again made headlines at the weekend when she stepped out in a gorgeous recycled Carolina Herrera gown. The Duchess, 43, sparked a frenzy at the LA Children’s Hospital gala wearing the £4,595 with many complimenting her ‘glowing skin’ and ‘toned arms’. But just how does Meghan achieve this flawless look? As the world awaits to see if Meghan Markle’s popular lifestyle blog makes a comeback, I read The Tig’s archived blogs to learn more about the Duchess of Sussex’s lifestyle routines and habits before she married Prince Harry – during her days as an actor on the TV series, ‘Suits’. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall says he’s fitter than ever due to plant diet

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has said that he’s fitter than 20 years ago as a result of his diet that consists of eating 30 different types of plants per week. In an interview withThe Times, the chef, who is best known for hosting the River Cottage cooking series on Channel 4, said that he grows 11,000 types of edible plants in his vegetable patch at the River Cottage HQ in rural Devon. “With all the other changes I’ve made, I’m probably healthier than I was 20 years ago,” said the 59-year-old. “”Eating plants obviously helps with that and 30 different types a week is optimum. No one is saying don’t eat more than that, but beyond 30 the benefits begin to plateau.” Fearnley-Whittingstall added that purchasing an electric car has helped him avoid snacking on chocolate bars at petrol stations, and …

So, you just got out of rehab. Congratulations! What a huge step towards reclaiming a positive future for you and your family. How is it going? Oh, this is your fourth rehab? You’re determined to overcome your addiction this time, but right now, you’re white-knuckling your way through. You know you don’t ever want to use it again, but you feel anxious every time you leave the house, you’re irritable and yelling at the kids, and you toss and turn all night. At rehab, they told you to expect this. This is just post-acute withdrawal, and will go away … in a year (maybe). The doctor wrote out prescriptions for a sleeping pill, anxiety medication, and an anti-depressant, but you don’t want to take them. You’re trying to live life without chemicals, but it’s getting really hard. You liked this last rehab. The staff and other clients were supportive and encouraging. They taught you good skills and helped you heal from the past. They explained that addiction is a “bio-psycho-social” disorder and explained the psycho-social …

Now Issy has lost 11st 10lbs and is a slender 13st 1lbs and can slip into a size 14 but has realised how differently she is being treated. She said people now hold the door open for her and smile at her and they hadn’t before – so she believes she now has ‘skinny privilege’. Issy, an e-commerce and social media manager, from Grimsby, Lincolnshire, said: “It’s basic things – someone holding the door open. People smiling at you. “I feel I get treated differently. When you’ve been big you realise you don’t have the same experience. “I was quite shocked that people before wouldn’t have entertained me before have popped up. I’m the exact same person. I still treat people the same. “I want someone to like me for me not for what I look like. People say you’re thinner now – must get more attention. “It’s a bit sad. Why wasn’t she worthy of the same? But everyone has a preference and everyone is entitled to that. “It’s crazy how different people treat …
