The UK is in a “new AI arms race” with countries like Russia and North Korea, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster will say on Monday. Minister Pat McFadden will be speaking at the NATO Cyber Defence Conference at Lancaster House, warning the UK and its allies that “cyber war is now a daily reality”. “Be in no doubt: the United Kingdom and others in this room are watching Russia. We know exactly what they are doing, and we are countering their attacks both publicly and behind the scenes,” he will say. “Putin is a man who wants destruction, not peace.” Read more: Russia ready to hit UK with wave of cyber attacks Image: Pat McFadden. Pic: AP In a bid to keep up with adversaries, Mr McFadden will announce a new Laboratory for AI Security Research (LASR). “AI is already revolutionising many parts of life – including national security,” he will say. “But as we develop this technology, there’s a danger it could be weaponised against us. Because our adversaries are also …
The destruction of an artwork by Ai Weiwei has been condemned as a “reckless and senseless act” of vandalism by the exhibition’s curator. A 57-year-old Czech man was arrested after smashing to pieces a large blue and white Porcelain Cube at Bologna’s Palazzo Fava museum on Friday, local reports said. The exhibition’s curator Arturo Galansino called it an act of “vandalism” made worse because some of the works on display “explore the theme of destruction itself”. Ryan Wesley Routh, the suspected gunman involved in an apparent assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida on Sunday, was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction over 20 years ago. “I figured he was either dead or in prison by now,” Tracy Fulk, the charging officer in the case, tells WIRED. “I had no clue that he had moved on and was continuing his escapades.” According to court records from the Guilford District Court in North Carolina obtained by WIRED, Routh was arrested by the Greensboro Police Department on December 16, 2002. Local reporting from Greensboro News and Record in 2002 states that Routh was pulled over by police during a traffic stop. Routh then drove to the business United Roofing, where he proceeded to barricade himself for three hours, the police said at the time. Fulk says he was well known in the area, and that police would get alerts about him allegedly related to, as she remembers, weapons and explosives. “One night …
Five of the world’s biggest banks are “greenwashing” their role in the destruction of the Amazon, according to a report that indicates that their environmental and social guidelines fail to cover more than 70% of the rainforest. The institutions are alleged to have provided billions of dollars of finance to oil and gas companies involved in projects that are impacting the Amazon, destabilising the climate or impinging on the land and livelihoods of Indigenous peoples. The banks say they follow ethical policies that help to protect intact forests, biodiversity hotspots, indigenous territories and nature reserves. However, the investigation says it has found geographical and technical limitations on their ability to monitor and achieve these stated goals. The report was produced by the watchdog organisation Stand.earth and the Coordinating Body of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA). The organisations mapped the extent of the environmental and social governance (ESG) commitments of five leading funders of fossil fuel operators in the South American biome. Those banks – Citibank, JPMorgan Chase, Itaú Unibanco, Santander and Bank of …
I have not returned to my home country of Equatorial Guinea for twenty years, for fear of violent reprisal. I live in the U.S now and I do not dare go back, particularly after that country’s president called me a traitor during a public speech, all because I advocated for human rights and against the rampant corruption that plagues the country. The Environmental Investigation Agency, a global environmental organization, recently issued a report alleging that Home Depot has sold products made with illegally sourced okoume wood from Equatorial Guinea. Home Depot is an American corporation worth more than $363 billion, with stores throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and China. It is considered a do-it-yourselfer’s paradise. But for the people in my community, Home Depot represents not paradise but rather the last link in a chain of unsustainable business practices and grand corruption that has afflicted my home country and impoverished our people. For decades, log trucks have crisscrossed Equatorial Guinea to load timber onto ships in port cities like Cogo, in the southwest of the …
Torrential rainstorms in Brazil’s southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul have caused the worst flooding the country has seen in 80 years, many deaths and the displacement of thousands of families. Central parts of the state were hit the hardest after the storms began last Monday, with unofficial weather stations in the area recording 50-100cm (20-40in) of rain over the past week. Widespread floods and landslides have caused major damage to homes and infrastructure, most alarmingly triggering the partial collapse of a small hydroelectric dam on Thursday, which sent a 2-metre-high wave through the surrounding area. At least 57 deaths have been reported and 24,000 people have been displaced, alongside an estimated 500,000 being without power and clean water. This part of South America is no stranger to major rainfall; Rio Grande do Sul has experienced flooding three other times in the past year. This is because the polar and tropical regions of the atmosphere meet around this latitude, resulting in a zone of high pressure that delivers long periods of dry weather punctuated …
Mumbai, India — Ever since he can remember, Rohit Kumar Sahu knew he wanted to go to college and get a well-paying, white-collar job. His father delivered courier packages across the eastern Indian city of Ranchi on a bicycle, and Sahu had no idea how to realise his dream. He signed up for a job with the food delivery app Zomato, thinking this could be his path to earning money to pay for college fees. Sahu began with just a few hours of work so he could attend college alongside his job, but he could’t make enough deliveries on his bicycle — and that meant he couldn’t earn much. He took a loan from friends and a finance company and bought a scooter so he could take on more work. Even as the loan repayments kicked in, Zomato reduced its payment to delivery workers like Sahu, and he got fewer deliveries as more drivers joined the app. Sahu scaled up his work to as much as 14 hours a day, going to college only to …
Damaged buildings are seen in an aerial photograph after the town was hit by a tornado the night before in Sulphur, Oklahoma, on April 28, 2024. BRYAN TERRY/USA TODAY NETWORK / VIA REUTERS Tornadoes killed at least four people in Oklahoma and left thousands without power Sunday, April 28, after a destructive outbreak of severe weather flattened buildings in the heart of one rural town and injured dozens of people. Nearly 30,000 people remained without electricity after tornadoes began late Saturday night. The destruction was extensive in Sulphur, a town of about 5,000 people, where many downtown buildings were reduced to rubble and roofs were sheared off houses across a 15-block radius. “You just can’t believe the destruction,” Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt said during a visit to the hard-hit town. “It seems like every business downtown has been destroyed.” Stitt said about 30 people were injured in Sulphur. Hospitals across the state reported about 100 injuries, including people apparently cut or struck by debris or hurt from falls, according to the Oklahoma Department of Emergency …
A preliminary 79 tornadoes were reported Friday across six states, most occurring in Nebraska and Iowa, where homes were leveled and buildings collapsed. Omaha, Nebraska, Mayor Jean Stothert said in a Facebook post early Saturday that no deaths had been reported and there were a few minor injuries after a destructive tornado moved through rural farmland before hitting the suburbs. Omaha police Lt. Neal Bonacci said hundreds of homes were damaged, mostly in the Elkhorn area in the western part of the city. Police and firefighters went door-to-door to help residents and to search areas where people could be trapped, Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman said. “We’ll be looking throughout properties in debris piles, we’ll be looking in basements, trying to find any victims and make sure everybody is rescued who needs assistance,” Bossman said. Pat Woods, who lives in Elkhorn, told The Associated Press, that …
