Earth’s driest desert is covered in wildflowers right now

THE ATACAMA DESERT, Chile — Spring has finally arrived in the Southern Hemisphere and, in Chile, even the desert is blossoming. Known as the driest nonpolar desert on Earth, a massive portion of the Atacama Desert has been covered in flowers after the El Niño weather pattern brought heavy rains to the region earlier this year. The unusually large amount of water allowed millions of seeds and bulbs to sprout and bloom, many of them after remaining dormant for decades. “It is a unique phenomenon; there are more than 200 plant species,” Jorge Carabantes, head of the Protected Areas Department at the National Forest Corp. (CONAF), told the Associated Press. “This is a flowering event that is obviously extraordinary and unusual, very different from other blooms that occur elsewhere on the globe.” The Atacama lies between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, stretching some 1,000 miles all the way down the northern coast of Chile. Although flowering is common during the transition from winter to spring, this year the rocky, brownish dunes that make up the …

But 15,000 years ago, a group of hunter-gatherers known as the Natufian culture living in the southern Levant did more than eke out an existence. Unlike other prehistoric communities, Natufians abandoned nomadic life across present-day Jordan, Palestine, and Israel for smaller, permanent settlements before they even developed agriculture. A major key to their survival? They weren’t picky eaters. Based on ancient bones discovered in the Nahal Me’arot Nature Reserve on Mount Carmel, Natufian diets were heavy on lizards, snakes, and other desert reptiles. The evidence is laid out in a recent study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “We were …

Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) enjoy Peru and Chile’s dry and hot shorelines.  Recently, one of these seaside desert penguins hatched into this world far from its natural home. The chick was born at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington, in association with a breeding program called the Humboldt Penguin Species Survival Plan. The initiative is devoted to safeguarding a healthy population of the species.  “We are eggstatic to announce the arrival of a new Humboldt penguin chick!” the zoo wrote in a statement.  The furry, grey chick is a female and the first chick born to parents …

New Mars rover could swim through sand like a desert lizard

New Mars rover could swim through sand like a desert lizard

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. To effectively travel on Mars, rovers need to deal with a lot of sand. German engineers have created a new kind of ground rover that uses swimming motions to push through sand that may otherwise cause the  wheels to get stuck. Its inspiration: the African sandfish (Scincus scincus), a lizard known for burrowing into the Sahara Desert and literally swimming through its sand like a fish. It’s one of the animal kingdom’s strangest methods of propulsion, but it may help shape the future of Mars exploration. A video of the rover, released this week by the University of Würzburg, shows a mini-fridge-sized, silver rover making its way through a sandy, Martian-mimicking test floor. Rather than rolling forward, each of its four wheels cuts through the sand in what looks like a figure-eight motion. The rover pushes on several yards and then cuts a corner and returns to where it started. Sandfish-inspired rover “The wheels mimic the animal’s [sandfish’s]characteristic interaction …

She built a life as a top Realtor. She was found dead in the desert

The last time Steve Robles spoke to his mom was two days before Mother’s Day. Lorraine Bird had received an offer for her Twentynine Palms home. She planned to counter, she told her son, describing the terms. Then, the 86-year-old disappeared. Ten days later, a content creator exploring a desolate stretch of the Mojave Desert found Bird’s nearly naked body curled up inside a graffiti-splashed boulder pile. Authorities haven’t determined if her death was a homicide or from natural causes and have made no arrests in the case, but say that an investigation is ongoing. The mystery has split her surviving family members and pushed her loved ones to seek answers. “This is a really, really ugly story,” Robles said. “There’s no good ending to it.” Bird’s daughter, Doreen Bird, did not return messages seeking comment for this article. In Siwa, the spartan luxury of an ecolodge in the Egyptian desert

In Siwa, the spartan luxury of an ecolodge in the Egyptian desert

The Siwa Oasis must be earned. It takes 10 hours by bus from Cairo to cross 560 kilometers of desert, or seven hours by private car. For hours, there is nothing – the desert, vast and empty – and then you arrive in a small town 40 kilometers from Libya. A certain nervous excitement takes hold of the new arrival. Here, another country begins, far from the Nile and the Red Sea resorts, far from the chaotic capital and the overcrowded delta. The visitor realizes they are somewhere else. In 2025, Egypt welcomed 19 million tourists, according to government data. How many make it all the way to Siwa? Very few. “Even though the oasis attracts more and more visitors, we are still a long way from the rest of the country,” explained Sergio Volpi, an Italian with a passion for Egyptology who has been living in Siwa for several years with his French partner, Pascale Bellamy, a novelist whose books are set in ancient Egypt. Volpi is the de facto local historian, running a …
