Academy body demands clarity over improvement team plans

Government announcement over new school improvement teams sparks renews concerns over where responsibilities will lie Government announcement over new school improvement teams sparks renews concerns over where responsibilities will lie The government has been urged to clarify where accountability for school improvement sits under its new intervention model to target support to those who need it most. The Confederation of School Trusts has voiced renewed concerns over where responsibilities will lie in the system, amid fears it will also undermine the “legal status” of academy chains. The Department for Education announced further details of how its regional improvement for standards and excellence (RISE) teams (formerly known as regional improvement teams) will work during a webinar yesterday. Government is recruiting school leaders to work with civil servants in the new teams, which will commission targeted support from bodies like trusts, councils or federations. Decisions over which schools require the tailored help will be based on new thresholds for intervention, informed by Ofsted report cards. But this morning, Confederation of School Trusts CEO Leora Cruddas raised concerns …

Ahmet Ögüt Demands That Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum Remove His Work

Ahmet Ögüt Demands That Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum Remove His Work

Artist Ahmet Öğüt called on the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam to stop showing his installation Bakunin’s Barricade (2015–20), claiming that the institution had failed to allow the work to be used during a protest over Israel’s military action in Gaza. The Art Newspaper first reported the news. Öğüt’s piece, which was acquired by the museum in 2020, is a barricade-like structure roughly the size of a small gallery space that was assembled from wrecked car, fencing, and other materials. Öğüt constructed it based on ideas circulated by the Russian dissident Mikhail Bakunin, who, during the 1849 Dresden uprising in Germany, called for the use of valuable paintings as shields on barricades, believing they would deter soldiers who would be afraid to destroy artworks. Related Articles When Bakunin’s Barricade has been shown in other venues, the wall text accompanying the piece has mentioned that it can be requested for usage in protests. “A loan contact, prepared in collaboration with a lawyer, stipulates that the barricade may be requested and deployed during extreme economic, social, political, transformative …

Jewish manifesto demands defence of infant circumcision

Jewish manifesto demands defence of infant circumcision

A “Jewish manifesto” has said political parties should “defend the right of Jews” to practise infant circumcision despite serious human rights concerns. The manifesto, from the Board of Deputies of British Jews, says the religious practice of cutting the foreskin off the penises of newborn male babies “must be safeguarded”. But infant circumcision has been increasingly criticised as a painful, dangerous and medically unnecessary procedure that is incompatible with children’s rights. The manifesto also calls for defence for non-stun religious slaughter and support for faith schools and discriminatory admissions. NSS: Circumcision incompatible with children’s rights The Jewish manifesto says male circumcision “should not be conflated” with female genital cutting (FGM), which it describes as an “assault” that often causes “serious long-term damage”. But an increasing body of evidence suggests male circumcision also risks long-term damage and even death. Between 2012 and 2022, the General Medical Council (GMC) dealt with 39 complaints relating to 30 doctors regarding circumcisions. The complaints include incidents in which children’s penises were left deformed and babies required blood transfusions. In 2011, …

Hindu manifesto demands would silence human rights groups, NSS warns

Hindu manifesto demands would silence human rights groups, NSS warns

Calls by Hindu groups for the next government to criminalise ‘Hinduphobia’ would threaten the work of human rights campaigners, the National Secular Society has warned. The ‘Hindu manifesto‘, recently published by a group of Hindu organisations, calls on candidates to recognise “anti-Hindu hate as a religious hate crime” and “proscribe organisations and individuals engaged in it”. Examples of Hinduphobia given in the manifesto include saying that “all inequity in Indian society”, such as “caste” and “misogyny”, stem from and are “inextricably bound up with” Hinduism. But the NSS argues that combatting misogyny and caste discrimination in India and the Indian diaspora must include challenging Hinduism and Hindu institutions. Groups which challenge caste discrimination and misogyny in UK Hindu communities include Southall Black Sisters, the Anti Caste Discrimination Alliance, the Dalit Solidarity Network, and CasteWatchUK. The Hindu manifesto is backed by groups including the Hindu Council UK (HCUK), which last year threatened Leicester Secular Society with police action after it hosted a talk critical of Hinduism’s caste system. HCUK has been highly vocal in its opposition …

Trump Demands Rupert Murdoch Fire Paul Ryan for Unforgivable Act (Saying He Won’t Vote for Him)

Trump Demands Rupert Murdoch Fire Paul Ryan for Unforgivable Act (Saying He Won’t Vote for Him)

Donald Trump demanded on Thursday that Rupert Murdoch boot former House Speaker Paul Ryan from the Fox Corp. board. The reason? Ryan committed the apparently fireable offense of telling people he will not be voting for Trump come November. “Rupert Murdoch should fire pathetic RINO Paul Ryan from the Board of Fox,” Trump scream-wrote on Truth Social. “Ryan is a loser, always has been, and always will be. He was the WEAKEST & MOST INCOMPETENT Speaker of the House in its History. Fox will sink to the absolute bottom of the pack if Paul Ryan has anything to do with it!” Trump’s commentary about Ryan came two days after the former GOP leader spoke about the ex-president at the Milken Institute Global Conference, saying: “Character is too important to me. And it’s a job that requires the kind of character that he just doesn’t have.” Ryan added that, “having said that, I really disagree with [Joe Biden] on policy. I wrote in a Republican the last time, I’m gonna write in a Republican this time.” …

California Legislature demands data after homelessness audit

California Legislature demands data after homelessness audit

SACRAMENTO —  Democrats and Republicans expressed frustration Monday as they grilled Gov. Gavin Newsom’s top housing officials in a tense legislative hearing about how billions of state dollars have been spent on the worsening homelessness crisis. The hearing by the Assembly budget subcommittee on accountability and oversight came after a state audit released last month found that California has failed to adequately track the outcomes of its vast spending on homelessness programs, raising questions about efficacy and transparency. California has spent more than $20 billion over the past five years to help people get off the streets, but homelessness has continued to rise — jumping by 6% in 2023 to more than 180,000 people. California has been the state with the largest homeless population for more than a decade, according to the latest federal data. The audit raised concerns in the Legislature about whether the spending has worked and could hamper requests by cities and counties for more money to address the crisis as the state faces a massive budget deficit. Assemblymember Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) …

Cancer innovation is saving lives – but NHS is struggling to meet rising demands | UK News

“The moment you have it yourself you hear it everywhere, but for something so prevalent it’s not talked about at all,” says Patrick Keane. His right arm is plugged into a tube that runs up to a bag of clear liquid in a treatment room at the Royal Free Hospital in north London, one of the UK’s largest cancer treatment centres. The 56-year-old’s future is dependent on the slow drip of chemicals that attack the cancer cells in his body. If the tumour in his bowel can be reduced by chemotherapy, it can then be more easily surgically removed. Returning to duties last week after his own diagnosis, the King chose to highlight innovations in cancer research and the thousands who like him are living under the shadow of the disease. Patrick is one. Indeed, he got his cancer diagnosis in late January, around the same time as the King, and he is taking part in an innovative clinical trial that may help future patients.
