Charity compares women who don’t wear hijab to ‘unwrapped sweets’

A newly registered Islamic charity has compared women who do not wear the hijab to ‘unwrapped sweets’, the National Secular Society can reveal. One True Message Foundation (OTMF), based in Feltham, West London, registered as a charity earlier this year under the charitable purpose ‘the advancement of religion’. In a now removed video titled Hijab vs Non-Hijab, Faisel Qarni, an OTMF trustee, says: “I have two sweets, yeah, one I open the wrapper and I throw it on the floor, yeah, and I tread on it a little bit. The other one I leave in the wrapper and I throw it on the floor and I tread on it. One’s in the wrapper one’s not. I pick both of them up and I say take one. Which one are you going to choose? … Case closed” The National Secular Society said the comments are “deeply misogynistic” because they suggest women who do not wear the hijab are “sullied”. Another OTMF video describes an “AMAZING SOLUTION” to “RAPIDLY reduce crime”. Qarni relates how “there’s no crime” …

Biden Compares Hamas Attack to Holocaust in Antisemitism Warning

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden warned on Tuesday that the threat of antisemitism is growing in the United States, including on college campuses, as his support for Israel’s assault on Gaza divides Democrats and alienates some young voters. In a speech honoring the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust, Biden joined a heated American debate about Jewish security, Zionism, free speech and support for Israel, in the country with the largest Jewish population after Israel. Addressing a bipartisan audience at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s annual commemoration, he warned of the risk that the truth about the systematic killing of Jews during World War Two would be lost. War in Israel and Gaza “‘Never again’ simply translated for me means: Never forget. Never forgetting means we must keep telling the story, we must keep teaching the truth,” Biden said at the U.S. Capitol’s Emancipation Hall. “The truth is we’re at risk of people not knowing the truth.” Biden spoke seven months to the day after the Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel on …

Sadiq Khan apologise to Chief Rabbi but Tory chair compares row to ‘BNP’ tactics | Politics | News

Sadiq Khan has been forced to apologise to the Chief Rabbi after implying that his criticism of the Mayor’s call for a Gaza ceasefire was influenced by Islamophobia. In an interview yesterday, the London Mayor said he had been “disappointed” when Jewish leaders condemned his decision to speak about Gaza. He complained that his interventions on the Middle Eastern conflict had been subjected to greater criticism than similar calls by Manchester mayor Andy Burnham. He told interviewer Mehdi Hasan: “What motivated them to come out in the way they did against the Mayor of London, and the Mayor of Greater Manchester – I’ll give you a clue, he’s not called Ahmed Bourani, he’s called Andy Burnham, whereas I’m called Sadiq Khan”. He added: “I’ve not seen the Chief Rabbi, the Jewish Chronicle, say comments against me in relation to my calls for a ceasefire”. “And I’d ask those Jewish people just to pause and reflect on their response to me calling for a ceasefire.” The comments sparked fury in the Jewish community, with one source …

In the first series, Durst lies to Jarecki about being in Madrid in order to get out of an interview, although it later transpires he was in Los Angeles. “Bob is like a Trump in that way, he’s very good at dodging something,” Jarecki said. “The Germans have this word ‘Blitzlüge’ – a lightning lie – something you can pull in a second. And so I know Bob was sitting in a restaurant in Los Angeles, listening to some Spanish music and said: ‘I’m sorry I can’t …

Andrew Scott Opens Up About How His Role In Ripley Compares To Sherlock’s Moriarty

Andrew Scott has revealed how he thinks his character in the new Netflix series Ripley compares to his villainous role in Sherlock. The Irish actor takes the lead in the new limited series about a grifter who is hired by a wealthy man to convince his son to return home from Italy, before a tale of deceit, fraud and murder ensues. The show is based Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, which was also adapted for the big screen for the 1999 film of the same name, which starred Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow. Speaking to HuffPost UK ahead of Ripley’s release on Thursday 4 April, the Fleabag star reflected on whether his new role bears any resemblance to the notorious Jim Moriarty in the BBC show Sherlock. The Bafta winner confessed that while it was “fun” to return to a darker character again, he finds the two characters exist in “very different territory”. “I feel Moriarty is a villain, and even though I know Tom Ripley does very villainous …

Nine crypto VCs on why Q1 investments were so hot and how it compares to previous bull market

If the 2023 crypto venture landscape was an ice-cold pot of water, the first quarter of 2024 is the part where the bubbles start to form right before water boils, Tom Schmidt, a partner at Dragonfly Capital, said to TechCrunch. And he’s not wrong: $2.52 billion in total capital has been raised across the crypto and blockchain sectors in Q1 2024, according to PitchBook data. That’s about 25% higher than $2.02 billion in the fourth quarter of 2023. “It’s been an extraordinarily busy time. It has 2021 feels to it,” said David Nage, portfolio manager at Arca. “Deals in 2021 felt like you had a gun to the back of your head; that feeling has kind of returned to the market a bit.” Nage said his firm has tracked over 690 deals across stages that have transpired during Q1, about 30 to 40% more than the lows in 2023. “In Q1, the crypto venture capital funding landscape was cautiously optimistic, rebounding from a challenging two-year period of fundraising difficulties for both companies and managers,” said …

How Sam Bankman-Fried’s Sentence Compares With Other White-Collar Cases

Two years in prison for tax and securities violations. Eleven years for deceiving investors. A 150-year sentence for the largest Ponzi scheme in history. The country’s most notorious white-collar fraudsters — like Bernie Madoff and Elizabeth Holmes — have received a range of punishments for their crimes, from relatively short prison terms to effectively a life sentence. On Thursday, Sam Bankman-Fried, the onetime cryptocurrency mogul, joined their ranks, receiving a 25-year sentence for fraud, conspiracy and money laundering. Mr. Bankman-Fried was convicted of stealing $8 billion from customers of his international crypto exchange, FTX — charges that carry a maximum sentence of 110 years. In legal filings, prosecutors cited 13 examples of white-collar prosecutions that involved a loss of more than $100 million. In all but two of those cases, the defendant was sentenced to 40 years or more. Here’s how Mr. Bankman-Fried’s sentence compares with penalties faced by other high-profile white-collar criminals. Michael Milken Mr. Milken, once known as the “junk bond king” of Wall Street, was sentenced to 10 years in 1990 for …
