Panasonic Z95A OLED TV Review: Searing Brightness and Colors

Panasonic Z95A OLED TV Review: Searing Brightness and Colors

Photograph: Ryan Waniata Thanks to excellent picture processing, details pop, from crystalline 4K Blu-rays to 1080p and even 720p upscaling. Only the fuzziest SD images fail to impress, sometimes coming through a little blocky, but that’s true of pretty much any 4K TV. The only minor chinks in the armor I noticed over several days were some small stutters or jerkiness with challenging motions scenes and some color banding with compressed video. Otherwise, I was able to just sit back and enjoy the glow. The highlight for me is the Z95A’s phenomenal colors, which are so rich and stirring that they caught me off guard, even when compared to all the other great flavors in Panasonic’s special sauce. I was gobsmacked from day one, starting with a casual viewing of the holiday classic Scrooged. From Bill Murray’s deep navy suits to the crimson-gold of Robert Mitchum’s pajamas, I found myself mesmerized—and it wasn’t just me. Fantasia is one of my wife’s most-viewed movies, yet we were both dazzled by the artistry. Sapphire blues, flashing silvers, …

Conspicuous logos and clothing colors influence perceptions of men’s mating priorities and attractiveness

Conspicuous logos and clothing colors influence perceptions of men’s mating priorities and attractiveness

New research published in Evolutionary Psychological Science found that exaggerated features in luxury goods can influence perceptions of men’s behavioral strategies. Conspicuous consumption, where individuals display wealth through luxury products, could be a tool for social differentiation. Evolutionary psychologists tend to focus on its function in mate attraction, suggesting that men’s luxury displays signal potential paternal investment. In this work, Daniel J. Kruger investigated an alternative theory, proposing that some of men’s conspicuous consumption signals mating effort over paternal investment. The researcher tested the phenotypic mimicry model, suggesting that the features of luxury goods, like large logos, can mirror secondary sexual characteristics. Across species, exaggerated features in males are linked to mating competition and reduced paternal investment. Thus, Kruger hypothesized that men with showier luxury goods would be perceived as prioritizing mating effort over parenting effort. In Study 1, 357 ethnically diverse undergraduate students (62% women) participated in an online survey where they rated hypothetical male shirt owners based on images of Ralph Lauren polo shirts. The shirts featured four different logo conditions: no logo, …

Kim Kardashian Continues Teasing Different Hair Colors Ahead of Met Gala

Kim Kardashian Continues Teasing Different Hair Colors Ahead of Met Gala

Stop teasing us, Kim Kardashian! Every May, we anticipate the reality star’s next fashion move. This year, Kardashian is keeping us on our toes with blink-and-you’ll-miss-it hair makeovers. In the past week, the mom of four has had two major hair transformations. She was sporting an icy blonde bun one minute and a pink pixie cut the next. Now, she’s back to blonde. On Wednesday, Kardashian, 43, posted an Instagram selfie wearing a blonde wig with the front pieces clipped back. “Blondes have more fun,” her hairstylist, Chris Appleton, commented. With the Met Gala less than a week away, it’s only natural to wonder: Are Kardashian’s hair color changes hinting at her Met Gala look? The iconic yellow plaid suit in the photo’s background gives away that the image isn’t recent, but rather a throwback of when the Kardashians star dressed up as Cher Horowitz from Clueless for Halloween in 2023. Whether Kardashian dyes her hair or wears a wig, we want to see it. On Monday, Kardashian revealed on Instagram a pink-dyed haircut that …

Where do all those colors in space telescope images come from?

Where do all those colors in space telescope images come from?

We’ve all seen beautiful images of outer space, with vivid swirls and bright stars resting on a black abyss. With how quick it is to snap a color photo on an iPhone, you might think that sophisticated space telescopes churn out color photos automatically, too.  However, all digital cameras—from your phone to the James Webb Space Telescope—can’t actually see in color. Digital cameras record images as a bunch of ones and zeros, counting the amount of light hitting their sensors. Each pixel has a colored filter over it (either red, green, or blue), which only allows specific wavelengths of light to go through. The filters are arranged in a specific pattern (typically a four-pixel repeating square known as the Bayer pattern), which allows the camera’s computing hardware to combine the captured data into a full-colored image. Some digital cameras spread the colored filters out across three individual sensors, the data from which can similarly combine into a full-color image. Telescope cameras, however, have to take images with one filter at a time, such that they …

Goethe’s Theory of Colors: The 1810 Treatise That Inspired Kandinsky & Early Abstract Painting

Goethe’s Theory of Colors: The 1810 Treatise That Inspired Kandinsky & Early Abstract Painting

I doubt I need to list for you the many titles of the 18th century German savant and polymath Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, but allow me to add one or two that were new to me, at least: color theorist (or phenomenologist of color) and progenitor of abstract expressionism. As a fascinating Booktryst post informs us, Goethe’s book on color, Zur Farbenlehre (Theory of Colors), written in 1810, disputed the Newtonian view of the subject and formulated a psychological and philosophical account of the way we actually experience color as a phenomenon. In his account, Goethe describes how he came by his views: Along with the rest of the world, I was convinced that all the colors are contained in the light; no one had ever told me anything different, and I had never found the least cause to doubt it, because I had no further interest in the subject. But how I was astonished, as I looked at a white wall through the prism, that it stayed white! That only where it came upon …

iPhone 16 Pro Could Come in New ‘Space Black’ and ‘Rose’ Colors

iPhone 16 Pro Could Come in New ‘Space Black’ and ‘Rose’ Colors

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models will come in new “space black” and “rose” titanium colors, claims a new rumor out of China. According to a Weibo post shared by leaker ShrimpApplePro on X (Twitter), the Blue Titanium color that iPhone 15 Pro models are currently available in will be dropped from the iPhone 16 Pro lineup in favor of the new rose color. Meanwhile, “space black,” which is said to be similar to the iPhone 14 Pro color of the same name, will replace Black Titanium. The rumor also claims that the Natural and White Titanium colors will be slightly different on the iPhone 16 Pro models. Natural Titanium is said to be returning, but with more of a gray tint to it. Meanwhile, White Titanium will appear more like a “silver white” color, which is also said to be similar to the silver version of the iPhone 14 Pro. The Weibo user that is the source of the rumor has not previously been tracked by MacRumors. However, ShrimpApplePro …
