The Cumulus Machine Review: Fast and Frothy Cold Brew

The Cumulus Machine Review: Fast and Frothy Cold Brew

But, a word on oxygen. The device essentially pumps pure air (79 percent nitrogen, 20 percent oxygen) into the coffee rather than fuss with nitro cartridges. This is cool, but oxygen exposure is the known enemy of fresh-tasting coffee. After the nitro evaporated, side-by-side taste tests did show more flabby oxidation flavors in the nitro than the basic non-nitro. But fresh off the machine, this doesn’t show up much. What you notice is bracing, fun bubbles that also add perceived sweetness. Those bubbles cover a lot of sins, building a dense head atop cold brew that looks for all the world like a well-poured Irish stout. A WIRED editor, looking at a photo of Cumulus’ abundant nitro, jovially suspected chicanery. “I’d swear they used Guinness for the promo shots,” he wrote. The espresso is likewise effervescent—endowed with a thick and genuine crema, formed through the pressure exerted by the device’s powerful compressor. It was the Cumulus espresso’s own natural frothiness that led to my handsomely foam-topped martini—a result that eluded me with chilled hot espresso. …

Five Cold Cases Solved in 2024 Because of New Technology

Five Cold Cases Solved in 2024 Because of New Technology

Handcuffs Source: Klaus with K / Wikipedia Commons As the year 2024 ends, police have solved some of the oldest cold-case murders using new crime-solving methods that didn’t exist when the crimes occurred. DNA and genetic genealogy are technologies that continue to grow across the country, and more law enforcement agencies are using them to solve crimes, as evidenced by their recently solved murders. Below are five of those cases, which coincide with projections that the national homicide rate in 2024 is on track to return to levels close to those recorded in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, per the Brookings Institution. The lower homicide numbers mark a trend for the third year in a row. Included in those statistics is a murder in California that happened 45 years ago. It was the case of Lewis Randy Williamson, who killed 17-year-old Esther Gonzalez just off Highway 243 in Riverside County in 1979, which remained unsolved–until now. In November 2024, the Riverside County Regional Cold Case Homicide Team announced that they had identified the killer as …

Star Trek’s Cold War – The Atlantic

This is an edition of The Atlantic Daily, a newsletter that guides you through the biggest stories of the day, helps you discover new ideas, and recommends the best in culture. Sign up for it here. I retired from a long teaching career a few years ago, but during my later years in the classroom, I offered a course on the Cold War and American pop culture, to try to help younger students understand the fears that dominated so much of American life in the 20th century. When my students saw how many times images of nuclear devastation (and references to Ronald Reagan) popped up on MTV back in the day, they started to get it. We also discussed The Twilight Zone, a series full of barely disguised allegories about the Cold War; the series’ head writer and creator, Rod Serling, a World War II veteran, explored traumas from his past and his worries about the future in many of the episodes he wrote. But the students were surprised—as you might be—to find that Star …

65p cold remedy gets rid of mucus without going to pharmacy

As Brits brace for the peak of cold and flu season, many are looking for remedies to combat the annual onslaught of symptoms, ranging from sore throats to blocked noses. There’s no cure for these, but numerous ways exist to alleviate discomfort, with one everyday kitchen staple earning a spot in the limelight. Dr Eric Berg, DC, who boasts a YouTube following of 12.7 million subscribers, has explained the virtues of salt, particularly sea salt, as an “anti-bacterial and anti-fungal” powerhouse against infections. The keto and intermittent fasting specialist, who also wrote the bestselling book ‘The Healthy Keto Plan’, outlined the benefits of sea salt for tackling mucus on his channel. “Salt can effectively get rid of bacteria, fungi, yeast, and mould in the body,” he said. He continues to share how salt expels unwanted pathogens through dehydration by drawing water out of cells, reports Surrey Live. This helps to thin mucus, making it easier to expel. Sea salt is widely available in supermarkets, with Aldi offering a 220g pot for just 65p, while Asda …

‘SNL’ VP debate cold open: Vance and Waltz vibe

Saturday Night Live continues its election lampooning with a cold open covering this week’s vice presidential debate. Kamala Harris (Maya Rudolph) and Doug Emhoff (Andy Samberg) sit down to watch the CBS-run debate, which featured JD Vance (Bowen Yang) dodging questions and Tim Walz (Jim Gaffigan) grading term papers. SEE ALSO: Are the 2024 presidential campaigns Too Online? As the debate went on, however, Vance and Walz found themselves agreeing on some things — which caused Rudolph’s Harris to spit out her wine and ask, “Why are they friends? Why are they vibing?” Dana Carvey returned as Joe Biden, not knowing where he was, eating ice cream, and being confused about who the hell Obama’s VP was. “This is a huge victory,” Harris said at the end of the debate. “It made no difference!” Source link

‘A return to the cold war’: Putin and Kim have joined forces as global delinquents | Vladimir Putin

A quarter of a century ago, Vladimir Putin flew to Pyongyang to sign a “friendship treaty” with Kim Jong-il that helped revive Russia’s relations with North Korea without obliging the two sides to come to each other’s aid in case of a military attack. With his visit last week, Putin has in effect gone further into the past, signing a deal with Kim Jong-un reminiscent of the 1961 security pact that existed under the Soviet Union during the cold war. But today Russia is engaged in a hot war in Ukraine that Putin has made his foreign policy priority, and a nuclear North Korea has become a crucial lifeline of munitions for his military. “The treaty that Putin signed with Kim Jong-un was a return to the cold war, but of course in the cold war North Korea had no nuclear weapons,” said Dr Edward Howell, the Korea Foundation fellow with the Asia-Pacific programme at Chatham House, and a lecturer at the University of Oxford. While last week’s summit was years in the making, it …

Russian warship visit brings cold war frisson to sweltering Havana | Cuba

Where once vast American cruise ships disgorged mojito-thirsty holidaymakers into the crumbling streets of old Havana, now lurks the eerie darkness of the Russian nuclear-powered submarine Kazan. “It looks like a dead whale,” says Adolfo García, as he queues under the scorching sun. The Kazan is off-limits, but García is hoping for a tour of the second of the four Russian naval vessels that have just docked in the Cuban capital, the frigate Admiral Gorshkov. The warships sent a cold war frisson when they arrived shortly after sunrise on Tuesday: a demonstration of Russia’s ability to operate in America’s backyard just as Joe Biden, the US president, signs a 10-year security pact with Ukraine. “The Russians seem interested in sticking a finger in Joe Biden’s eye,” said William LeoGrande, a professor at American University, although he added that comparisons to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis – when the Soviet Union’s attempt to place nuclear weapons in Cuba brought the world to the edge of Armageddon – are “ludicrous”. The Cuban government insists this is a …

Brrr-itish summer: why is it so cold and when will it get warmer? | UK weather

From the water coolers to the WhatsApp groups, the question remains the same: what has happened to the British weather, and is there any sign of summer hiding in the forecasters’ models? Halfway through an unseasonably cold June, a shift is already under way. But that doesn’t mean it is time to break out the barbie. Having endured chill winds blowing down from the north, the shift in weather will bring warmer, if not quite warm, temperatures, and with it, sporadic downpours and even thunderstorms. “It feels like quite a contrast from last year when we were all experiencing a heatwave with about 30C temperatures in south-east England,” says Dr Matt Patterson, a climate physicist at the University of Reading. “It’s not like that this year.” Temperatures this month in celsius terms have been around half those reached in the record-breaking heatwave of last June, and 3C-4C cooler than average for the time of year. It has been an exceptionally wet year, too. Britain’s weather is largely shaped by the polar front jet stream, a …

Here in the UK talking about the weather is already a national pastime, but this month the water-cooler weather chat has ramped up a notch as rain, grey skies and biting temperatures have put summer firmly on hold. Chess Within the Cold War

Chess Within the Cold War

The game of chess has been around for more than fifteen centuries. Originating in India in the 6th century B.C., this game of wits has transformed and evolved until it reached the form in which we know it today. Many geniuses left a lasting mark on the world of chess. Bobby Fischer is one of them. Fischer’s gift for the game of chess led him to one victory after the other, culminating with the title of the World Champion in 1972. The events leading up to this moment are some of the most interesting and tumultuous in the history of chess.   Young Fischer: The Rise of a Child Prodigy Bobby Fischer, 1962. Source: Life   Bobby first got introduced to the game of chess when he and his sister bought a small set at a candy store. When his sister lost interest, young Bobby would often play games against himself. He was only six years old. That same summer he stumbled upon a book of old collected chess games and studied it vigorously. …
