You might forget all about cloud storage when you switch to this dual USB drive in 2025

When your phone screen starts flashing the low-storage notifications a little more than usual, your first instinct is probably to grab some cloud storage. It’s the easiest option, right? Sure, but do you really want to pay a recurring fee for extra space? We definitely don’t, which is why it might be time to switch back to a thumb drive. No, it’s not the thumb drive you had in middle school. This one is a dual USB drive with USB-A and USB-C ends for double compatibility, comes with 1TB of storage, and has super-quick transfer speeds. And unlike your usual cloud storage options, you’ll never have to pay a recurring fee again once you order your flash drive for only $69.97 (reg. $109). Cloud storage, who? There’s a new thumb drive in town Your life is already overrun with subscriptions for everything from Netflix to your Equinox membership, so why would you want to pay yet another subscription for your cloud storage, too?  Imagine starting 2025 with one less subscription and actually owning your storage by investing …

Two monstrous black holes are consuming a massive gas cloud

Two monstrous black holes are consuming a massive gas cloud

At the heart of most galaxies lies a supermassive black hole, often surrounded by a disk of matter that feeds it. This combination, known as an active galactic nucleus, can emit powerful light, varying across the electromagnetic spectrum. These fluctuations usually follow predictable patterns, but some objects defy expectations, revealing new insights into the universe’s workings. Astronomers have recently uncovered a groundbreaking discovery involving two monstrous black holes. This event, called AT 2021hdr, has challenged conventional understanding of galactic activity. Observations suggest that these black holes are disrupting and consuming a massive gas cloud, creating an oscillating light pattern unlike anything seen before. “This is a very unusual event,” explained Lorena Hernández-García, an astrophysicist in Chile. She and her team believe the gas cloud envelops the black holes, and as they orbit each other, the interaction disturbs the gas, causing periodic emissions of light. This discovery, detailed in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, is a remarkable step in understanding black hole dynamics. NASA Satellite Inspects Strange-Looking Cloud That Always Forms in Same Spot

NASA Satellite Inspects Strange-Looking Cloud That Always Forms in Same Spot

Okay, that’s a weird one. Pet Names A NASA observation satellite has imaged an oddly-shaped cloud hovering above the Strath-Taieri region in southeastern New Zealand. A satellite image shared by the space agency and taken on September 7 shows an unusual, elongated cloud nestled along a rocky mountain range. The strange-looking cloud formation often occurs in the same spot, leading locals to dub it the “Taieri Pet.” Though it sounds like alien sci-fi, there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation: the peculiar cloud is an altocumulus standing lenticular cloud (ASLC), according to NASA, which is created when winds encounter a steep barrier such as a mountain range. Winds get swept up, creating a standing wave while air at the crest of the wave cools down enough to form water vapor, which condenses into clouds. “As the cloud forms on the crest of this wave, it remains almost stationary in the sky and is shaped by the strong winds blowing through it,” explained New Zealand’s MetService meteorologist John Law in a NASA statement. Blowing Clouds Other ASLC clouds can …

Edge AI vs Cloud AI what are the differences and why they matter

Edge AI vs Cloud AI what are the differences and why they matter

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed industries by enabling systems to make smart decisions, process vast amounts of data, and even predict outcomes in real-time. Two primary paradigms in AI deployment are Edge AI and Cloud AI. While both approaches offer significant advantages, their differences are essential to understand when deciding which one best suits your needs. As technology evolves, the decision between deploying AI on the edge or in the cloud has a direct impact on factors like latency, scalability, cost, and security. Quick Links Key Takeaways : Edge AI processes data locally on devices like sensors and cameras, reducing latency and improving privacy. Cloud AI relies on centralized, remote servers to process and analyze vast amounts of data, making it scalable and efficient for large datasets. The main trade-offs include latency, bandwidth, cost, and security. Edge AI is faster but less scalable, while Cloud AI provides better data storage and computational power at the cost of speed and privacy. Your choice between Edge and Cloud AI should depend on factors like real-time processing needs, …

Kiyoshi Kurosawa on Anti-Capitalist Action Film ‘Cloud’

Kiyoshi Kurosawa on Anti-Capitalist Action Film ‘Cloud’

The last time the journeyman Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa was at the Venice Film Festival, he took home the event’s prestigious best director award for his period drama Wife of a Spy. He is back in the Italian festival’s main competition this week with Cloud, the first action film of his expansive and acclaimed filmography. The film received a boost on Friday morning ahead of its world premiere on the Lido, as news arrived in Venice that Japan had selected Cloud as its official entry to the Oscars’ best international film race.  The film tells the story of Ryōsuke Yoshii (Masaki Suda in a star-making performance), a worker at a small factory who makes money on the side as an online reseller of random goods — medical devices, handbags, collectible figurines — anything he can flip for a quick profit. Gradually, Yoshii begins shunning those around him — an old friend who taught him the reselling game, his thoughtful boss at the factory, some of the people he does business with online and in person — focussing exclusively …

The power of purpose-built cloud infrastructure

The power of purpose-built cloud infrastructure

But while moving to the cloud will always deliver significant benefits, the demands of business are fast evolving, requiring organizations from all industries to support a new level of compute power. Today’s banks must build models capable of measuring and monitoring credit risks. Manufacturers must rapidly iterate on product designs to reduce time to market without compromising quality. And pharmaceutical companies require high-performance infrastructure to accelerate insights in genomics and precision medicine. In these specialized scenarios, running all workloads on the same general-purpose infrastructure is no longer sufficient. Organizations now have a wide variety of cloud options, and they need to make infrastructure choices that best fit their needs and use cases. Making uniform choices has consequences for cost, performance, and scalability, according to Paul Nash, corporate vice president of product for Azure Core Infrastructure at Microsoft. “General purpose really isn’t general anymore, so understanding how to match the right products to your solutions becomes a significant part of capturing the value that cloud offers,” he says. Because of this, organizations also cannot lift and …
