Decolonising the curriculum hasn’t closed the gap between Black and white students – here’s what might

Decolonising the curriculum hasn’t closed the gap between Black and white students – here’s what might

Students at UK universities are less likely to get a top degree – a first or 2:1 – if they are from an ethnic minority. This is known as the race or ethnicity award gap. It is measured by comparing the proportion of white undergraduates who recieve a top degree with the proportion of students of colour who do so. In 2023, the gap stood at 12.3%. However, this gap varies for UK students from different minority ethnic communities. In 2023 there was a 19.3% difference between the number of white and Black students receiving a first or 2:1. Universities have been taking measures to address this gap. But my research shows that they have been looking at the problem in the wrong way. Current university responses to the race award gap are driven by an assumption that the issue lies in the curriculum. The presumption is that because the knowledge students need to acquire at university is based on a largely white and Eurocentric body of literature or tradition of learning, this favours students …

With Rafah crossing closed by Israel, Gazans have no way out

With Rafah crossing closed by Israel, Gazans have no way out

JERUSALEM — Palestinians in Gaza already had little chance of escaping the war. Then came Israel’s capture of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt last month, sealing off the last remaining exit. Israel had permitted tens of thousands of Gazans to leave through Rafah over the past eight months. Some were critically sick or wounded. Others went through an Egyptian company, which facilitated departures for a hefty fee. Foreign countries worked to evacuate dual citizens and their relatives. The United States, Egypt and Israel are in talks to reopen the crossing — also vital for aid deliveries to the Strip — though little progress has been made. The Israeli rights group Gisha said it successfully lobbied for 18 Palestinian citizens of Israel and residents of Jerusalem to leave Gaza in late May through Kerem Shalom, another southern crossing. But Israel’s offensive in Rafah, aimed at eliminating Hamas’s last battalions, has dashed any hope of escape for the rest of Gaza’s ill and injured civilians, as the health system collapses and the U.N. warns that more …

Acropolis closed during hottest hours in Greece’s earliest heatwave on record | Greece

The Acropolis, Greece’s most visited tourist site, was closed to the public during the hottest hours of Wednesday as the season’s earliest-ever heatwave swept the country, prompting school closures and health warnings. The culture ministry had said the Unesco-listed archaeological site in Athens would close from midday to 5pm (09.00 to 14.00 GMT), with temperatures expected to reach 43C (109F) on Wednesday and Thursday. The first heatwave of the year in Greece – which is regularly hit by searing summer temperatures – is due to peak over those two days, and the ministry said the measure could be extended. Meteorologists have noted this is the earliest heatwave – which for Greece is classed as temperatures exceeding 38C for at least three days – in recorded history. “In the 20th century we never had a heatwave before 19 June. We have had several in the 21st century, but none before 15 June,” said the state TV meteorologist Panos Giannopoulos. Tourists were ushered out of the archaeological site as it closed for the afternoon. Photograph: Alexandros Beltes/EPA …

I-95 in Connecticut Reopens After Flaming Crash Left It Closed for Days

NORWALK, Conn. (AP) — Interstate 95 in Connecticut reopened Sunday after a flaming crash involving a gasoline tanker scorched a bridge and left the roadway closed for days, officials said. Authorities shut the highway down in both directions after a three-vehicle crash Thursday involving a gasoline tanker, which burst into flames and damaged an overpass above I-95 in Norwalk. No one was seriously injured. “It is truly remarkable to complete this work in less than 80 hours,” Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said Sunday on the social platform X. Trouble for Trump? Nikki Haley wins 156,000 votes in closed Pennsylvania primary

Trouble for Trump? Nikki Haley wins 156,000 votes in closed Pennsylvania primary

Nikki Haley dropped out of the GOP presidential race in early March, but her name on the Pennsylvania ballot still drew more than 156,000 votes from registered Republicans on Tuesday, potentially spelling trouble for Donald Trump, the party’s presumptive nominee. Primary returns show 16.6 percent of voters choosing Haley in Pennsylvania’s Republican primary, where only registered party members could participate, with her strongest performance coming in the suburban counties around Philadelphia. President Joe Biden won the state in 2020 by roughly 80,000 votes, in part due to support from Republican-leaning women in the Philadelphia suburbs. In the suburban counties of Montgomery, Chester, and Delaware, Haley, the former UN ambassador under Trump, managed to get 23-25 percent of the GOP primary vote. Haley also over-performed in some, more rural counties where Trump beat Biden, gaining 20-23% of the vote in Lancaster and Cumberland counties. Haley voters told The Philadelphia Inquirer that they were frustrated with their options. “I don’t like [Trump],” said Eric Miller, a 2020 Biden voter who plans on supporting the Democratic nominee again. …

The Guardian view on school exclusions: to help children, gaps in the system must be closed | Editorial

The Guardian view on school exclusions: to help children, gaps in the system must be closed | Editorial

The doubling in the rate of children suspended from school in England since before the pandemic provides alarming evidence of worsening problems with behaviour and lack of in-school support. Persistent disruption was the reason most often cited in figures covering last spring, followed by physical assault against another pupil. The steep rise in suspensions of four- and five-year-olds is a particularly alarming trend, with 10,256 primary-age children suspended for assaulting an adult. Being out of school is associated with a range of adverse experiences and outcomes, the vast majority of those affected being boys. Pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (Send) and those eligible for free school meals are at disproportionate risk, as are black Caribbean boys and those from some other minority ethnic groups. For this reason, a broad consensus supports the view that exclusions, especially permanent ones, should be avoided whenever possible. The rise in the rate of suspensions, from 1.62% in 2016‑17 to 3.13% last year, points to something going badly wrong. What looks at first glance like a big jump in permanent …
