Cleverly rejects Braverman’s claim Islamists are running UK

James Cleverly has rejected a claim made by Suella Braverman that Islamists are now in charge of the UK.  The Home Secretary said Britain has a “high functioning democracy” and “we live by the rule of law” and therefore it was not “right or appropriate to imply anything other than that”.  Mrs Braverman wrote in a piece for The Telegraph: “The truth is that the Islamists, the extremists and the anti-Semites are in charge now.” Asked if his predecessor at the Home Office was right, Mr Cleverly told Times Radio: “No. I can understand her frustration but we do still live in one of the greatest countries in the world if not the greatest country in the world.  “We have a high functioning democracy. We live by the rule of law. And I don’t think it is right or appropriate to imply anything other than that.  “But what we value needs to be defended. I and the Prime Minister and the rest of the Government are absolutely committed to defending those things that we value: …

Classified documents: Trump’s lawyers claim presidential immunity protects him

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump’s legal team filed multiple motions Thursday night urging a Florida judge to dismiss the criminal case charging him with illegally retaining classified documents, claiming in part that presidential immunity protects him from prosecution — an argument they have already submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court in his election interference case. Lawyers Christopher Kise and Todd Blanche wrote that the charges “turn on his alleged decision to designate records as personal under the Presidential Records Act (PRA) and to cause the records to be moved from the White House to Mar-a-Lago.” Since Trump made this decision while he was still in office, they wrote, it “was an official act, and as such is subject to presidential immunity.” Trump faces dozens of felony counts in federal court in Florida accusing him of illegally hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate and obstructing government efforts to retrieve them. The case is currently set for trial on May 20, but that date could be pushed back. Trump’s lawyers also argued that Attorney …

FDA Warns Consumers Not to Use Smart Watches or Rings That Claim to Measure Blood Glucose Levels

FDA Warns Consumers Not to Use Smart Watches or Rings That Claim to Measure Blood Glucose Levels

Wednesday February 21, 2024 12:44 pm PST by Juli Clover The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not want consumers to purchase or use smart watches or smart rings that claim to measure blood glucose levels using non-invasive methods. In a safety warning shared today, the FDA says that smart devices that claim to check blood sugar without piercing the skin can lead to errors in diabetes management, including taking too much or too little medication. No smart watch or smart ring that is intended to measure or estimate blood glucose values non-invasively has been authorized, cleared, or approved by the FDA. These non-invasive devices are different from continuous glucose monitoring devices (CGMs) that relay data through a smart watch app. Apple is rumored to be working on a version of the Apple Watch that will be able to measure blood glucose non-invasively, but launch of such a device is still several years away. Apple has been exploring optical absorption spectroscopy using a laser to shine light under the skin to determine a …

Academics win claim against Oxford University over ‘sham contracts’ | University of Oxford

Two academics who sued Oxford University for employing them on “sham contracts” as gig economy workers, have won their claim for employee status in a ruling that could have implications for other higher education workers on precarious contracts. Rebecca Abrams and Alice Jolly, both respected authors, taught on Oxford’s prestigious creative writing course for 15 years, but were employed on fixed-term “personal services” contracts, which they claimed denied them important workplace rights. After an employment tribunal hearing last month, the judge found in their favour, ruling that they were engaged on fixed-term contracts of employment and should therefore be classed as employees. Lawyers said a hearing would be held to assess the implications of the ruling. Abrams welcomed the judgment and said she hoped it would prompt “an urgently needed reboot” in the way universities treat teachers. “Alice and I are skilled professionals teaching at one of the world’s top universities, yet we’ve been employed year after year on sham contracts that have denied us our employment rights and legal protections. “With nearly 70% of …

Woman drops claim of Leon Black rape at Jeffrey Epstein mansion

FILE: Leon Black, chairman and chief executive officer of Apollo Global Management LLC, at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, California, U.S., on Tuesday, May 1, 2018.  Patrick T. Fallon | Bloomberg | Getty Images A woman who had accused Apollo Global Management co-founder Leon Black of raping her at the New York mansion of the late sex predator Jeffrey Epstein has agreed to drop her civil lawsuit against Black. The suit by the woman, Cheri Pierson, was “discontinued with prejudice and without costs to any party as against the other,” according to a Manhattan Supreme Court filing Friday signed by her lawyer and Black’s attorney. That notation means that Pierson cannot resurrect her legal claims against the billionaire investor Black in connection with the purported attack at Epstein’s Upper East Side residence in 2002. It also means that Black did not make a payment to settle the case. Black had denied Pierson’s allegation, filed in November 2022, that he had raped her in a suite at Epstein’s mansion, where she had gone …

Yemen’s Houthis claim attacks on Israeli, US ships | Houthis News

Houthi rebels say ships in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea are their latest maritime targets. Yemen’s Houthi rebels say they have targeted what they claim to be an Israeli cargo ship, the MSC Silver, in the Gulf of Aden near the entrance to the Red Sea with a number of missiles. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea did not elaborate, but in a statement on Tuesday said the group had also used drones to target a number of United States warships in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea as well as sites in the southern Israeli resort town of Eilat. However, the British maritime security firm Ambrey said the container ship targeted by the Houthis on Tuesday was Liberia-flagged and headed for Somalia. “The Houthis characterised the vessel as Israeli. The operator was publicly listed as [in] cooperation with ZIM and regularly called [at] Israeli ports,” the Ambrey advisory note said. Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd, commonly known as ZIM, is a publicly held Israeli international cargo shipping company based in Israel. The Houthis, who …

What does it mean to claim the US is a Christian nation, and what does the Constitution say?

What does it mean to claim the US is a Christian nation, and what does the Constitution say?

Many Americans believe the United States was founded as a Christian nation, and the idea is energizing some conservative and Republican activists. But the concept means different things to different people, and historians say that while the issue is complex, the founding documents prioritize religious freedom and do not create a Christian nation. Does the U.S. Constitution establish Christianity as an official religion? No. What does the Constitution say about religion? “(N)o religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.” (Article VI) “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” (First Amendment) If it says “Congress,” does the First Amendment apply to the states? It does now. Early in the republic, some states officially sponsored particular churches, such as the Congregational Church in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Within a few decades, all had removed such support. The post-Civil War 14th Amendment guaranteed all U.S. citizens “equal protection of the laws” and said states couldn’t impede on their …

Daily Mail faces £100K claim from Labour donor pictured next to ‘sex harassment’ headline

Daily Mail faces £100K claim from Labour donor pictured next to ‘sex harassment’ headline

Green energy industrialist Dale Vince was “seriously defamed” by a Daily Mail article which he claims falsely suggested he was the subject of sexual harassment allegations. Mr Vince is suing the paper’s publisher, Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), after the article headlined “Labour repays £100,000 to ‘sex harassment’ donor” was printed in June last year. The story reported that the Labour Party was handing back money to donor Davide Serra, who has been accused of sexual harassment, while also referencing fellow donor Mr Vince. A hearing in London was told that Mr Vince was libelled by the article’s headline, image and captions, as they made readers think he was the subject of the allegations. The court heard the main image was one of Mr Vince, with another image which had his face circled, but the article said in its first two paragraphs that the allegations related to Mr Serra. Thanks for subscribing. Close Godwin Busuttil, representing Mr Vince, said: “My client, Mr Vince, has been very seriously defamed in the eyes of the substantial group of …

Putin Makes Absurd Claim About Life, Death, Destiny – And Ukraine

Vladimir Putin has claimed the ongoing developments in Ukraine are “a matter of life and death” for Russia. Speaking to a journalist with the Russian state media, Pavel Zarubin, the Russian president said his interview with right-wing US commentator Tucker Carlson was about hammering home this particular message. During their two-hour interview earlier this month, Putin made a number of bewildering claims and went on an obscure historical rant for half an hour. But, he told Zarubin he was trying to convey how significant “everything that happens in the Ukrainian direction” is to Russia as a whole. According to the Russian state news agency TASS, Putin said: “For them [the West] this is about improving their tactical position, but for us this is about our destiny, a matter of life and death. “I wanted people that will listen to this [interview with Carlson] to realise that. It’s not up to me to judge whether it hit the mark or not.” Certainly, many people have died since Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 …

Houthis claim cargo ship is at risk of sinking after Red Sea attack | Yemen

The Houthis have claimed one of their most significant strikes since they started launching missiles at ships in the Red Sea, after two projectiles hit a Belize-flagged cargo ship. The Yemeni rebels claimed the ship was at risk of sinking, a significant propaganda victory for the Houthis if confirmed. The security firm of the Rubymar, which was sailing from the United Arab Emirates to Bulgaria, said the crew had been evacuated safely but did not confirm a sinking. The security company LSS-SAPU said the vessel was struck astern on Sunday, although there was nothing flammable onboard. “We are unsure [of the ship’s condition]. There is nobody onboard now,” the spokesperson said. “The owners and managers are considering options for towage.” The ship was struck 93 miles east of Aden and follows Houthi claims that they had shot down a US drone over the port of Hodeidah. The Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, said in a televised address on Monday that the Rubymar suffered “catastrophic damages and came to a complete halt” after being targeted in …
