Carl Sagan Issues a Chilling Warning About the Decline of Scientific Thinking in America: Watch His Final Interview (1996)

Carl Sagan Issues a Chilling Warning About the Decline of Scientific Thinking in America: Watch His Final Interview (1996)

Until the end of his life, Carl Sagan (1934–1996) continued doing what he did all along — popularizing science and “enthusiastically conveying the wonders of the universe to millions of people on television and in books.” Whenever Sagan appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson during the 70s and 80s, his goal was to connect with everyday Americans — people who didn’t subscribe to Scientific American — and increase the public’s understanding and appreciation of science. At the end of his life, Sagan still cared deeply about where science stood in the public imagination. But while losing a battle with myelodysplasia, Sagan also sensed that scientific thinking was losing ground in America, and even more ominously within the chambers of the Newt Gingrich-led Congress. During his final interview, aired on May 27, 1996, Sagan issued a strong warning, telling Charlie Rose: We’ve arranged a society on science and technology in which nobody understands anything about science and technology, and this combustible mixture of ignorance and power sooner or later is going to blow up in our faces. I mean, who …

When Salvador Dalí Created a Chilling Anti-Venereal Disease Poster During World War II

When Salvador Dalí Created a Chilling Anti-Venereal Disease Poster During World War II

As a New York City subway rider, I am constantly exposed to public health posters. More often than not these feature a photo of a wholesome-looking teen whose sober expression is meant to convey hindsight regret at having taken up drugs, dropped out of school, or forgone condoms. They’re well-intended, but boring. I can’t imagine I’d feel differently were I a member of the target demographic. The Chelsea Mini Storage ads’ saucy regional humor is far more entertaining, as is the train wreck design approach favored by the ubiquitous Dr. Jonathan Zizmor.  Public health posters were able to convey their designated horrors far more memorably before photos became the graphical norm. Take Salvador Dalí’s sketch (below) and final contribution (top) to the WWII-era anti-venereal disease campaign. Which image would cause you to steer clear of the red light district, were you a young soldier on the make? A portrait of a glum fellow soldier (“If I’d only known then…”)? Or a grinning green death’s head, whose choppers double as the frankly exposed thighs of two faceless, …

AI-generated child abuse images increasing at ‘chilling’ rate – as watchdog warns it is now becoming hard to spot | Science & Tech News

The amount of AI-generated child abuse images found on the internet is increasing at a “chilling” rate, according to a national watchdog. The Internet Watch Foundation deals with child abuse images online, removing hundreds of thousands every year. Now, it says artificial intelligence is making the work much harder. “I find it really chilling as it feels like we are at a tipping point,” said “Jeff”, a senior analyst at the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), who uses a fake name at work to protect his identity. In the last six months, Jeff and his team have dealt with more AI-generated child abuse images than the preceding year, reporting a 6% increase in the amount of AI content. A lot of the AI imagery they see of children being hurt and abused is disturbingly realistic. “‘Whereas before we would be able to definitely tell what is an AI image, we’re reaching the point now where even a trained analyst […] would struggle to see whether it was real or not,” Jeff told Sky News. In order …

A Chilling Thriller by Riley Sager

A Chilling Thriller by Riley Sager

An Eerie Mansion, A Decades-Old Massacre, and One Woman’s Dark Past Collide There’s something inherently unsettling about old houses. The creaky floorboards, the musty smell, the lingering sense that the walls hold untold secrets. In Riley Sager’s latest thriller “The Only One Left,” Hope’s End—a crumbling clifftop mansion in coastal Maine—takes on a sinister life of its own as the backdrop for a chilling tale of murder, deception, and long-buried truths finally coming to light. From the moment we step inside Hope’s End alongside protagonist Kit McDeere, Sager infuses the atmosphere with a palpable sense of dread. This decaying gilded-age relic feels like a character in its own right—tilting precariously towards the sea, creaking and groaning as if in pain, its rooms still echoing with the horrors of that bloody night in 1929 when most of the Hope family was brutally slaughtered. At the center of it all sits Lenora Hope – the sole survivor and presumed perpetrator of the infamous “Hope family massacre,” now elderly and mute after a series of strokes. Or so …

Trump Shares Chilling ‘Final Battle’ Video For Supporters Following Conviction

Trump Shares Chilling ‘Final Battle’ Video For Supporters Following Conviction

Former President Donald Trump ramped up his rhetoric following his conviction in his hush money trial on Thursday when he once again posted online a video in which he vowed to “liberate America” in what he described as the “final battle.” Audio from a previous Trump campaign rally was layered over footage of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee walking in the 35-second video he shared on his Truth Social platform. Trump also shared the clip in 2023. “This is the final battle,” he told supporters in the narration. “With you at my side, we will demolish the deep state. We will expel the warmongers from our government. We will drive out the globalists. We will cast out the communists, Marxists and fascists. We will throw off the sick political class that hates our country.” “We will rout the fake news media and we will liberate America from these villains once and for all,” he concluded. Outside the courthouse, Trump ranted about a “rigged, disgraceful trial,” claimed he “didn’t do a thing wrong” and said he …

Emmanuel Macron’s chilling six-word warning to Putin | World | News

Emmanuel Macron has once again indicated his willingness to deploy NATO troops in Ukraine in a move which one European defence minister warned would trigger World War 3. The French President’s metamorphosis from dove to hawk has been notable in recent months, with the 46-year-old becoming one of Vladimir Putin’s fiercest critics. And he used an interview with the Economist to reinforce his bullish message when asked whether he stood by remarks made on February 26, when he hinted at the possibility of direct involvement by allied soldiers. The former banker, who was elected to the French presidency in 2017, insisted: “I’m not ruling anything out, because we are facing someone who is not ruling anything out. “If Russia decided to go further, we will in any case all have to ask ourselves this question.” Mr Macron characterised his ambiguity as a “strategic wake-up call for my counterparts”. Speaking at a time when Russia seized another village in eastern Ukraine, with widespread speculation that Putin is plotting a major new offensive, Mr Macron branded Russia …
