Solving the battery supply chain puzzle

Solving the battery supply chain puzzle

With the expected five-to-ten-fold increase in demand for electric vehicles in the US by 2030, the US Government is committed to establishing a domestic battery supply chain that will require a complete overhaul of the industry. The obvious problem with this initiative is a battery supply chain barely exists in the United States today, and the majority of the focus has been on building end-value chain gigafactories, with 35 major projects currently planned or in construction, with minimal intentionality regarding essential raw materials in situ and early-stage processing. Into the void comes US Strategic Metals (USSM), which fashions itself as a unique one-stop shop green battery metals platform willing to do the hard yards in the ground as well as take on the significant challenges of processing and recycling. Stacy Hastie, Co-Founder and CEO, recently said: “The last time the world experienced a global energy revolution – from coal to oil – in the early 20th Century, the US was the global leader in this transition. That leadership position helped fuel the American Century and …

Apple’s First Foldable Device Won’t Be an iPhone, Say Supply Chain Sources

Apple’s First Foldable Device Won’t Be an iPhone, Say Supply Chain Sources

Apple is now deciding on the design of its first foldable device as work on the project ramps up, DigiTimes reports. Citing Taiwanese supply chain sources in a paywalled report, DigiTimes claims that Apple has been developing its first foldable product for at least five years. Corroborating previous rumors, the publication claims that the foldable is set to be a “larger device” rather than an iPhone, instead embodying a tablet or notebook. Design efforts on the device are now said to be converging ahead of plans for mass production. Since hinge mechanisms for foldable devices have become increasingly advanced in recent years, the main problem for Apple’s foldable is said to be developing a panel that meets its quality demands. The report adds that Apple’s rumored suspension of Samsung foldable display panel development and internal reorganization to move Vision Pro engineers to the foldable project are not contradictory moves, since the company is overwhelmingly prioritizing quality. The report clarified that Apple has not suspended work on foldable devices, with the company allegedly now possessing multiple …

Confronting the alarming rise of supply chain attacks

Confronting the alarming rise of supply chain attacks

Kamil Fedorko, Global Cybersecurity Practice Leader at Intellias, discusses the escalating threat of supply chain attacks and emphasises the need for comprehensive defense strategies to mitigate risks. Supply chain attacks remain one of the most serious threats to cyber security that exist today. With the number of attacks increasing by nearly 750% per year between 2019-2022, it’s clear that threat actors have identified increasingly integrated digital supply chains as an extremely effective and lucrative way to gain access to networks and data. The main challenge lies in securing what can be extremely complex supply chains, not least because vulnerabilities can be introduced or exploited by threat actors at any stage. Typically, these attacks succeed when cyber criminals manage to infiltrate technology infrastructure indirectly by exploiting weaknesses in less secure suppliers, vendors, or partners of the actual target organisation. Although the concept of attacking digital supply chains has been around for many years, incidents only started gathering significant attention following the massive SolarWinds breach in 2020, which impacted thousands of public and private sector organisations globally. …

Hotel Chain Forces Two Male Employees To Share A Bed On A Work Trip

Hotel Chain Forces Two Male Employees To Share A Bed On A Work Trip

A boss wrote into the subreddit r/hotels with a question about etiquette and recourse surrounding a mistake made by a big-name hotel that affected two of his employees while on a trip. The hotel chain made two employees share a bed during a work trip. The boss explained it all in the headline of his Reddit post: “Hilton made my employees share a king bed, (booked 2 queens).” Within the post, he shared that he took a few of his long-term employees on a “vacation/work event … at an all-inclusive resort, where the room booked was one of the premium rooms.” RELATED: You Can Tell How Much Your Job Respects You Based On The Way Your Boss Handles One Specific Problem “They are co-workers, and I don’t know how hotel employees would think this to be acceptable,” the boss complained, willfully ignoring that he organized the trip and, as their higher-up, deemed it okay for employees to share a room in the first place. New Body Shop owner to call in administrators for UK chain | Business News

New Body Shop owner to call in administrators for UK chain | Business News

The new owners of The Body Shop are lining up administrators for its British arm just weeks after taking control of the cosmetics retailer, in a move which could threaten significant numbers of shops and jobs. Sky News has learnt that the company founded by Anita Roddick and her husband Gordon nearly half a century ago is preparing to appoint FRP Advisory to handle an insolvency process for its UK operation, which trades from around 200 stores. City sources said on Friday that the administrators were ultimately likely to consider closing a significant chunk of The Body Shop’s UK outlets, although they stressed that it was premature to speculate on specific numbers. The Body Shop employs a large number of people in Britain, including at its head office in London. The administration process for its UK operations will not impact the brand’s global franchise partners, according to one insider. In recent days, The Body Shop’s businesses across most of Europe and parts of Asia have been sold to an unnamed family office. The retailer told …

Meesho taps micro-entrepreneurs to plug gaps in India’s supply chain network

Meesho taps micro-entrepreneurs to plug gaps in India’s supply chain network

India is one of the fastest growing economies, yet its supply chain system remains antiquated, operating much as it did decades ago. The logistics sector is highly fragmented, with a majority of small, regional operators lacking scale and efficiency. Regional truckers still rely on brokers and word-of-mouth to secure cargo, while severe truck shortages in urban manufacturing hubs delay transport of goods. And that’s a problem for India’s rapidly expanding e-commerce sector — and the players involved.  Meesho – backed by Prosus Ventures, Fidelity, SoftBank and Peak XV – is having a go at plugging the gaps in the country’s supply chain. The Bengaluru-headquartered startup launched a network, called Valmo (short for value movement), on Wednesday that aims at bringing together logistics platforms, technology partners and small entrepreneurs operating sorting centers to optimize the delivery process. Meesho is betting on micro-entrepreneurs because they have strong understanding of local communities and have the latent capacity to take on additional work, the startup said. The network allows delivery partners to be located closer to users, thereby reducing …

MicroLED Apple Watch Ultra May Be Delayed Due to Supply Chain Issues

MicroLED Apple Watch Ultra May Be Delayed Due to Supply Chain Issues

Apple is widely expected to bring a microLED display to the Apple Watch Ultra, but a new report out of Korea suggests the company may not have the supply chain configured early enough to launch the device by 2026. Throughout last year, Taiwanese research firm TrendForce predicted a 2026 launch timeframe for the device. That’s later than several other sources, which have centered on 2025. However, according to The Elec, problems relating to high manufacturing costs and production yields remain the biggest obstacles to mass production of the microLED Apple Watch Ultra and could even delay the release beyond 2026. Apple has reportedly been working on custom microLED display technology for almost a decade. The advanced display offers improved brightness, color reproduction, dynamic range, viewing angles, and efficiency, making images look more like they are “painted” atop the display glass. The current Apple Watch Ultra has a display size of 1.93-inches, whereas the upcoming microLED model is expected to feature a 2.12-inch screen. Apple’s problem is that the cost of manufacturing a screen with such …

Why publishers need to wrest back control of content value chain

Why publishers need to wrest back control of content value chain

Press Gazette reports that Google’s plans to switch off third-party cookies on Chrome could kill ad-funded journalism on the open web. It isn’t that long ago that Facebook’s algorithms were to blame. And so it has gone on for years. Well tough doodoo! Publishers were far too quick to unquestionably romance with the digital big boys, and now we’re all paying the price of over-dependency. Some 20 years ago at an event in Zurich, I told the assembled mediarati: “We are all feeling the allure of the likes of Google and Yahoo. So was I, but be careful: it won’t be long before they’re eating your lunch, then they’ll come back to eat the whole table.” About six months later Gavin O’Reilly, then president of the World Association of Newspapers and chief operating officer of Ireland’s Independent Newspapers, said: “The search engines are increasingly aiming their strategic efforts at traditional content originators and aggregators like newspaper publishers… The irony is that these search engines exist, largely, because of the traditional news and content aggregators and …

Invasive ants leave lions scrambling for prey on the savannah in an ecological chain reaction

Invasive ants leave lions scrambling for prey on the savannah in an ecological chain reaction

Lions, elephants, zebras, buffalo, ants, and trees are all locked in an intricate ecological web in one Kenyan nature preserve. But that web is unraveling as a small invader disrupts the natural balance of things, according to a study published January 24 in the journal Science. The spread of an invasive insect across the savannah habitat of Ol Pejeta Conservancy has triggered a domino effect. The fallout leaves lions less able to hunt zebras–their primary prey– and has prompted the big cats to pursue larger and potentially more dangerous buffalo, says Todd Palmer, one of the study authors and a biology professor at the University of Florida. Other major ecosystem shifts, like loss of bird habitat and declining soil health, are likely also occurring.  The new research builds on past work to demonstrate just how delicate and complex the savannah ecosystem is. More broadly, it shows how important mutualisms (mutually beneficial relationships between species) can be in habitats around the world. When the connections between organisms are disrupted, it can have serious conservation consequences. A …

The Jesus and Mary Chain: ‘Despite our reputation, we’re gentle – tea and toast guys’ | Jesus and Mary Chain

Sibling relationships can be difficult to navigate in bands, as evinced by numerous bands, including your own. How do you balance your relationship as brothers and bandmates? somecandytalking Jim Reid (vocals, guitar): If I’ve learned anything, it’s how to deal with my brother, and he’s the same. We used to have invisible lines we didn’t cross, but in the 90s we couldn’t stand each other. I’m eternally grateful that most of the incidents were before smartphones, so they’re not on YouTube. One night when we were DJing, we ended up rolling around on the floor, fighting, looking up to people’s horrified expressions. William Reid (vocals, guitar): At the [Los Angeles] House of Blues gig in 1998, Jim got so drunk he couldn’t remember the songs. I kicked him off stage, tried to be the singer, but didn’t know the words. It finished the band for nine years, but we haven’t had a fight for a long time. It goes smoothly if there’s no alcohol involved. We’re mature now. You don’t want to be arguing all …
