As US spotlights those missing or dead in Native communities, prosecutors work to solve their cases

As US spotlights those missing or dead in Native communities, prosecutors work to solve their cases

Albuquerque, New Mexico —  It was a frigid winter morning when authorities found a Native American man dead on a remote gravel road in western New Mexico. He was lying on his side, with only one sock on, his clothes gone and his shoes tossed in the snow. There were trails of blood on both sides of his body and it appeared he had been struck in the head. Investigators retraced the man’s steps, gathering security camera footage that showed him walking near a convenience store miles away in Gallup, an economic hub in an otherwise rural area bordered on one side by the Navajo Nation and Zuni Pueblo on the other. Court records said the footage and cell phone records showed the victim — a Navajo man identified only as John Doe — was “on a collision course” with the man who would ultimately be accused of killing him. A grand jury has indicted a man from Zuni Pueblo on a charge of second-degree murder in the Jan. 18 death, and prosecutors say more …

US Antitrust Cases Against Big Tech, Explained

US Antitrust Cases Against Big Tech, Explained

The U.S. government’s landmark antitrust trial against Google’s search business is nearing its conclusion. But the parade of major federal cases challenging Big Tech’s power is just getting going. Under the Trump administration, the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission started investigating Amazon, Apple, Google and Meta, the parent company of Instagram and WhatsApp, for monopolistic behavior. The government has since sued all four companies — Google twice — in what it says is an effort to rein in their power and promote more competition. The companies have denied the claims and are fighting back. Closing arguments wrap up on Friday in Google’s first antitrust suit on allegations that it has a monopoly in internet search. The judge’s ruling, expected in the coming weeks or months, is likely to set precedents for the remaining cases. Here’s the latest on the state of the U.S. government v. Big Tech. Amazon In September, the F.T.C. and 17 states sued Amazon, accusing it of protecting a monopoly by squeezing sellers on its vast marketplace and favoring its …

Scientists worry the U.S. may be missing bird flu cases in farm workers : Shots

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is ordering dairy producers to test cows that produce milk for infections from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI H5N1) before the animals are transported to a different state following the discovery of the virus in samples of pasteurized milk taken by the Food and Drug Administration. Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Officially, there is only one documented case of bird flu spilling over from cows into humans during the current U.S. outbreak. But epidemiologist Gregory Gray suspects the true number is higher, based on what he heard from veterinarians, farm owners and the workers themselves as the virus hit their herds in his state. “We know that some of the workers …

Trawl for unsafe criminal convictions being done by interns | Criminal Cases Review Commission

Trawl for unsafe criminal convictions being done by interns | Criminal Cases Review Commission

Interns have been given the job of weeding out potential wrongful convictions for rape and murder in a major case review prompted by Andrew Malkinson’s exoneration, the Guardian can reveal. The miscarriage of justice body the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) said last month that it would be re-examining cases it had refused to refer to the court of appeal to check for new DNA testing opportunities. An internal CCRC board paper seen by the Guardian shows that its newly announced forensic trawling exercise has so far been carried out by interns, who have begun the process of whittling down historic cases that could be sent for further DNA testing. The exercise has been trumpeted as having the potential to uncover further wrongful convictions that have been missed by the body. Emily Bolton, Malkinson’s solicitor at the law charity Appeal, said: “Given the seriousness of this review, it is concerning that so far the work has been done mainly by interns.” The paper also suggests that there are about 8,000 other serious potential miscarriages of …

Criminalizing prostitution leads to an increase in cases of rape, study finds

Criminalizing prostitution leads to an increase in cases of rape, study finds

A recent study published in the Journal of Population Economics sheds light on the unintended consequences of Sweden’s ban on the purchase of sex. The research indicates that the regulation, aimed at curbing prostitution, may have led to an unexpected increase in rape offenses. The regulation of prostitution remains a highly debated issue globally. In the United States, prostitution is illegal except for in Nevada. European countries vary in their approach from decriminalization, like in Denmark, to outright bans on purchasing sex, such as the Nordic model adopted by Sweden, Norway, and Iceland. Proponents of the Nordic model argue that it protects human rights and reduces human trafficking by penalizing the buyers of sex rather than the sex workers themselves. However, quantitative evidence on the effectiveness of these laws in reducing related crimes has been sparse and primarily qualitative. “So far the economic literature studied the effect of decriminalizing prostitution on rape. Yet, little was known about criminalization of prostitution. To this extent, this study analyzes the effect of criminalization of the purchase of prostitution,” …

‘Vampire Facials’ Were Linked to Cases of HIV. Here’s What to Know About the Beauty Treatment

‘Vampire Facials’ Were Linked to Cases of HIV. Here’s What to Know About the Beauty Treatment

Three women were diagnosed with HIV after getting “vampire facial” procedures at an unlicensed New Mexico medical spa, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report last week, marking the first documented cases of people contracting the virus through cosmetic services using needles. Federal health officials said in a new report that an investigation from 2018 through 2023 into the clinic in Albuquerque, VIP Spa, found it apparently reused disposable equipment intended for one-time use, transmitting HIV to clients through its services via contaminated blood. Vampire facials, formally known as platelet-rich plasma microneedling facials, are cosmetic procedures intended to rejuvenate one’s skin, making it more youthful-looking and reducing acne scars and wrinkles, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. After a client’s blood is drawn, a machine separates the blood into platelets and cells. Photos You Should See – April 2024 The plasma is then injected into the client’s face, either through single-use disposable or multiuse sterile needles. Vampire facials have gained popularity in recent years as celebrities such as Kim Kardashian …

Gérard Depardieu in Police Custody for Questioning in Assault Cases

Gérard Depardieu in Police Custody for Questioning in Assault Cases

French police have taken actor Gérard Depardieu into custody for questioning on new accusations of sexual assault, the French media reported on Monday. Multiple media sources, including Agence France-Presse (AFP) and BFM-TV, are reporting that the 75-year-old actor (Cyrano de Bergerac, Green Card) has been accused by two separate women of sexual assault. The alleged incidents reported occurred in 2021 — when Depardieu was shooting French film Les Violets vertes (The Green Shutters) — and in 2014 during the making of TV movie Le Magicien et les Siamois (The Magician and the Siamese). Another assault case against Depardieu involving allegations of two acts of rape dating back to 2018 brought by actress Charlotte Arnould is still making its way through the French courts. French prosecutors dismissed a different complaint, filed by French actress Hélène Darras, in January, citing the statute of limitations for the alleged crime, which Darras said occurred on the set of Fabien Onteniente’s film Disco in 2007. Last April, in an in-depth report published by French investigative news website Médiapart, 13 women …
