Best GoRuck Backpacks (2025): Rucking, Hiking, and Every Day Carry

[ad_1] The GoRuck GR1 (7/10, WIRED Review) is the pack that launched the company, and still the best and most versatile of the GoRuck lineup. The GR1 comes in 2 sizes: 21L and 26L, I have both, but if I had to pick only one, it would be the 21L. This is the perfect size for rucking, everyday carry, and weekend trips if you pack light. I have even lived out of the 21L bag (with a shoulder bag for my camera gear) during a week long trip. It was a squeeze, but it worked. The 21L GR1 is deceptively large and always seems to swallow more gear than I think it can. My favorite thing about the GR1 is its versatility. I have used this pack for plane travel (as a carry-on), rucking, hiking, hauling camera gear, and more. I even strapped it to the back rack of my bike for an overnight bikepacking trip. The only caveat I have is that if you use it for rucking (or hiking, or whatever you want …

The Repair Shop to ‘carry on without’ Jay Blades

The Repair Shop to ‘carry on without’ Jay Blades

[ad_1] The Repair Shop is “carrying on without” Jay Blades while he deals with challenges in his personal life. Earlier this month, furniture restorer Blades, who is the face of the BBC series, made headlines after his wife Lisa Zbozen announced she was leaving him. The news came shortly after Blades revealed his uncle Richard Brathwaite had been killed. In a post to his fans, Blades said Brathwaite’s death had “really affected” him and announced a break from social media – and told The Independent he was planning to see a counsellor. This was corroborated in an Instagram post, in which the London-born TV host told his followers he was “going to go and get some therapy and just chill out”. It’s now been reported that Blades’s break has extended to his Repair Shop role. According to The Sun, the host has not been a part of episodes filmed this week. “Jay has taken a step back and is having a break from filming The Repair Shop,” a source told the outlet, adding that the …

George Walker IV/AP NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In March 2023, an assailant shot and killed three students and three staff members at the Covenant School, a private Christian elementary school in Nashville. The shooting prompted calls for gun safety legislation. Thousands of people protested outside the Tennessee Capitol calling for universal background checks, safe gun storage laws and accountability for the gun industry. At the time, it seemed like there was bipartisan support for some type of gun control bill. Republican Gov. Bill Lee urged lawmakers to pass a red flag law – a measure that would temporarily confiscate guns from people deemed a danger …

LESHA BEREZOVSKIY FOR M LE MAGAZINE DU MONDE On May 8, the majestic three-masted sailboat Belem will dock in the southern French city of Marseille, with a precious kind of cargo on board: the Olympic flame. Twenty-seven athletes – the same number as the European Union (EU) member states – will take turns carrying it. They will be accompanied by a 28th athlete, who will be their captain, at just 21 years of age: Mariia Vysochanska, a Ukrainian gymnast and also the daughter of a soldier currently stationed on the front lines of the war against Russia. The young woman, with her discreet smile and long hair, told her story; describing her neighborhood of Pechersk, in Kyiv, where “the smell of lilac flowers makes people’s heads spin.” A champion in rhythmic gymnastics, Vysochanska has trained relentlessly in the capital, although her sessions have been interrupted by air alerts. “I made it! I’ve got my tickets in my pocket!” she rejoiced. Her journey to …

Key Witness Says Trump Did Not Personally Ask Him To Carry Out ‘Hush Money’ Payments

[ad_1] Authored by Jack Phillips via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours), Former President Donald Trump attends his trial for allegedly covering up hush money payments linked to extramarital affairs, at Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City, on May 6, 2024. (Peter Foley/Pool/AFP via Getty Images) A witness in former President Donald Trump’s New York “hush money” trial on Monday appeared to confirm his attorneys’ claims that payments at the center of the case were legal expenses and that he was not personally directed by the former president to make those payments. Former Trump Organization controller Jeffrey McConney testified Monday that payments that were sent to former attorney Michael Cohen were legal expenses, confirming defense attorneys’ arguments. “Michael Cohen was a lawyer?” Trump defense attorney Emil Bove asked Mr. McConney. “Sure, yes,” he replied. “And payments to lawyers by the Trump Organization are legal expenses, right?” asked Mr. Bove. “Yes,” said Mr. McConney. Later, Mr. McConney said that President Trump and Trump Organization official Allen Weisselberg never told him to log the payments to Mr. …

The pretty British town where teenagers carry machetes | UK | News

[ad_1] Residents living in the Somerset town of Bridgwater have warned that they fear for their lives in an area where teenagers are sometimes seen carrying knives. In recent months the situation has escalated to the point where the leader of the town council Brian Smedley has raised the issue with the local town wardens, police, and homeless department. What’s more, locals now say they’re afraid of teenagers between the ages of 14 and 16 and those in gangs who they claim carry machetes. They add that they pose a bigger problem than some of the drinkers who they don’t see as so much of a threat. Speaking to the Sun, manager of The Fountain Pub, Becky Webber, 35, said: “It’s the kids that hang around in gangs that are the main problem. They are in big groups of 14–16-year-olds, and it’s getting worse. “If I had to deal with the drinkers or the young kids I’d pick the drinkers because the young gangs are terrifying. They carry machetes, you see comments on social media, and …

What Is the History of ‘Keep Calm and Carry On?’

[ad_1]   The ubiquitous catchphrase ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ has become the quintessential symbol of the United Kingdom, representing stoical resolve and restraint in the face of hardship and struggle. Today the phrase appears everywhere from posters and mugs to tea towels. Often printed in a vintage font and featuring the British crown, the phrase conjures up the plucky, patriotic determination expected of Brits during World War II under the leadership of Winston Churchill, a sentiment that can also be applied to a myriad of new situations today. But where did the phrase actually come from, and how did it become so widespread?   Wartime Propaganda Your Courage… Will Bring Us Victory, World War II propaganda. Source: Heritage Posters   During the buildup to World War II, the British Government established the Ministry of Information (MOI) to produce a series of morale boosting posters for display across Britain. Designed with bold, big text, and catchy slogans, alongside the British crown, the aim was to capture as many Britons as possible. Of the slogans the …

Solo GP fund Andrena Ventures hopes to carry startup talent onto its next challenges

[ad_1] In the world of startups, it’s not uncommon to see talent from successful companies go on to found their own ventures. This is particularly evident in fintech in Europe, where alumni from unicorns like Monzo, N26, Revolut and others have started a flurry of new companies. Andrena Ventures, a solo GP fund based in the U.K, wants to support this startup factory snowball effect by investing in such second-generation startups at the pre-seed and seed stages. To do so, it has raised $12 million from backers including several VCs and entrepreneurs. The firm’s general partner, Gideon Valkin, told TechCrunch that while he will fund talent with roots in European and British fintech, Andrena itself is sector agnostic. He expects most of his portfolio companies to focus on other categories like AI, climate tech and B2B enterprise solutions. Andrena has already made its first investment: Nustom, an AI startup founded by Monzo’s co-founder, Jonas Templestein, whom Valkin reported to when he worked at Monzo. Nustom hasn’t publicly launched yet (which explains its succinct website), but …

How you stay calm and carry on in tough times : Goats and Soda

[ad_1] Your breakfast toast is not just a carb. It can be an inspiration. All it takes is “putting a happy face on my toast with squeeze jam,” Debra Grabowski of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, tells us. That was one of the lovely emails from readers when we asked them to share the ways and means they use to keep calm and carry on in the face of setbacks and gloom. The impetus for this callout came from an article we published earlier this month. We asked some of the attendees at the Skoll World Forum, dedicated to “accelerat[ing] innovative solutions,” what they do to “keep calm and carry on” when things get tough. We are grateful to all who responded. Here’s a sampling of their advice. Look ahead … way ahead Toast decorator Debra Grabowski also recommends glancing into the future: “When things go offline and it’s getting mentally hairy, I think: “Will this matter in five years?” We should all be as smart as this 6th grader “Hi Goats and Soda! I’m Natalie …

Special Teams Carry Rangers to a Game 3 Win and a 3-0 Series Lead on the Capitals

[ad_1] WASHINGTON (AP) — Nothing seems to be able to knock the New York Rangers off their game, certainly not giving up a fluky bounce goal five minutes in or having seven penalties called on them. Again they responded to whatever the Washington Capitals threw at them, and now they’re one win away from the second round. Vincent Trocheck had a power-play goal and a short-handed assist, Igor Shesterkin made 27 saves and the Rangers beat the Capitals 3-1 in Game 3 Friday night, taking a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven first-round series. They can advance with a victory in Game 4 Sunday night. “We play really good,” Shesterkin said. “But we need to win one more game, and we focus on the next one.” The Rangers scored goals at even-strength 5 on 5, up 5 on 4 and down 4 on 5 in a special teams showcase from the Presidents’ Trophy winners who finished atop the NHL regular season in part because of their potent power play. Trocheck set up Barclay Goodrow short-handed and …
