Candidates to Run Washington Post Withdraw After Being Asked How They’d Use AI to Run the Newspaper

That pivot to AI isn’t working out too well, huh? Pivotal Moment After its controversial pivot to AI earlier this year, the Washington Post‘s CEO is now turning off editorial candidates by asking them how they would use the technology to run the newspaper. As Axios reports based on insider sources, two candidates for an executive editor position that would run the paper withdrew themselves from consideration after its publisher and CEO Will Lewis, who was selected by owner Jeff Bezos to “save” the paper — and who issued the AI edict soon into his tenure — had them lay out their own strategies for using the tech. Those candidates — Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times executive Cliff Levy and Anne Kornblut of Meta, who used to be a WaPo editor — were apparently not impressed by Lewis’ ask. According to Axios‘ sources, whose names were not published, Levy withdrew his candidacy last week, and Kornblut did so in September. Some candidates for the position were also asked to pen six-page memos about their vision for WaPo, including how they would incorporate AI …

What Tory leadership candidates should learn from the mistakes of Boris Johnson – and Silvio Berlusconi

What Tory leadership candidates should learn from the mistakes of Boris Johnson – and Silvio Berlusconi

The Conservative party is choosing a new leader, with four candidates still in the running: Kemi Badenoch, James Cleverly, Robert Jenrick and Tom Tugendhat. Each is pitching to a party in dire need of a new direction and the path ahead is far from clear. Our recent research suggests the candidates could learn a lot from two phenomenally successful party leaders of the recent past in the weeks ahead – but probably more in terms of what not to do. We’ve looked at Silvio Berlusconi, who was prime minister of Italy three times between 1994 and 2011, and Boris Johnson, more briefly prime minister of the UK from 2019 to 2022. Both were unusual politicians, media-driven leaders who dominated with a combination of three “Ps”:-personalisation, performance and populism. As political celebrities they used, and manipulated, the media to create unending controversy (much easier for Berlusconi as he owned such a large part of it). It appeared that their approach paid off at the ballot box. Berlusconi won three elections and reshaped Italian politics, while Johnson …

Some nonprofit newspapers endorse candidates. So why can’t churches, new lawsuit asks.

Some nonprofit newspapers endorse candidates. So why can’t churches, new lawsuit asks.

(RNS) — A group of evangelical broadcasters who hosted Donald Trump at their national conference earlier this year is suing the Internal Revenue Service over the so-called Johnson Amendment, a tax law that bars nonprofits from supporting political candidates. Lawyers for the National Religious Broadcasters, along with two Baptist churches and a conservative group called Intercessors for America, argue in their suit that the ban on engaging in politics restricts their freedom of speech and freedom of religion. They further argue that the IRS ignores the politicking of some charities, while threatening to punish others. In particular, lawyers for the groups claim that newspapers and other news outlets that have become nonprofits in recent years, such as the Philadelphia Inquirer, endorse candidates. Why can’t churches or other Christian groups, they want to know, do the same? “Plaintiffs believe that nonprofit newspapers have a clear constitutional right to make such endorsements or statements,” read the complaint filed Wednesday (Aug. 28) in the United States District Court of the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division. “Plaintiffs simply …

Nigel Farage Skewered By Susanna Reid Over Reform Candidates

Nigel Farage Skewered By Susanna Reid Over Reform Candidates

Nigel Farage was called out repeatedly by presenter Susanna Reid on Tuesday over the Reform Party’s controversial list of candidates. Since launching its election campaign, Farage’s populist party has been forced to drop multiple candidates as offensive comments online resurfaced. Only on Monday, candidate Grant StClair-Armstrong had to quit after it was revealed he had previously endorsed the British National Party (BNP). And on Tuesday, Reid mentioned another, more widespread, issue with Reform candidates’ online presence. In a Good Morning Britain interview with Farage, she said: “You’ve defended 41 [Reform candidates] found to be social media friends of a fascist leader, a former organiser for the British National Party, who founded the new British union in the image of Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists.” Nearly one in 10 Reform candidates standing in England are reportedly “friends” with fascist leader Gary Raikes. Farage initially seemed lost for words, but then said: “I didn’t even know the bloke until last Thursday! “People put stuff on Facebook and they like a comment, they have no idea who …

General election: The Conservative candidates ditching the Tory brand | Politics News

General election: The Conservative candidates ditching the Tory brand | Politics News

How bad is the Conservative brand?  Bad enough for dozens of its own candidates to avoid using it, according to research from Sky’s Online Campaign Team and Who Targets Me. We looked at the adverts published on Facebook and Instagram by 521 Labour and Conservative candidates from 1 May until 12 June. Of these, 376 adverts contained official branding (logos and colours), 104 had some form of partial branding, and 41 had no branding at all. And the vast majority of those with no branding – 38 – were Conservative. Of the 80 Conservative candidates who had partial branding, 59 (73%) only mentioned the party in the funding disclosure – where they were legally obliged to do so. They did not mention the party anywhere else in the text of the advert, or on the visuals if the advert was an image (no videos were watched). Of the 19 Labour candidates, all mentioned the party in the written text above the advert, as well as in the funding declaration. More on General Election 2024 Most …

Tories’ national service pledge was sprung on candidates, says minister | Military

The Conservative campaign pledge to introduce mandatory national service was dreamed up by advisers and sprung on candidates, a government minister has said. Criticism of the headline-grabbing policy has centred on claims it was not fully thought through before being announced, while ministers said just two days before the announcement that a return of national service was not on the cards. “It’s a Conservative party policy. The government’s policy was set out on Thursday,” said the government minister Steve Baker, referring to his colleague Andrew Murrison’s previous insistence there were “no current plans to reintroduce national service”. Baker, who serves as a minister of state at the Northern Ireland Office, said on Monday: “I don’t like to be pedantic but a government policy would have been developed by ministers on the advice of officials and collectively agreed. I would have had a say on behalf of [Northern Ireland]. But this proposal was developed by a political adviser or advisers and sprung on candidates, some of whom are relevant ministers.” On Monday, the Labour leader, Keir …

Ben Giles Latino voters made up roughly a quarter of Arizona voters who cast a ballot in 2020, according to NALEO Educational Fund, a nonprofit that works to increase Latino political participation. That’s a nearly 20% increase in their share from 2016 and a roughly 58% increase in the number of Latino Arizonans voting from 2016. But Junior Lopez, a boxing instructor in Phoenix, wasn’t one of them. He didn’t vote in the midterms either. So how did Lopez, a self-described political novice, end up hosting U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego, who is running for the U.S. Senate, at his gym on the border of Phoenix and Glendale, Arizona? Lopez said he had questions. “I kind of wanted to know, be informed a little …

It’s six months until the US election. Do pollsters know where their candidates are? | US elections 2024

It’s six months until the US election. Do pollsters know where their candidates are? | US elections 2024

“You know what I hate?” Donald Trump asked in Freeland, Michigan, on Wednesday night. “When these guys get on television, they say – pundits, you know, the great pundits that never did a thing in their whole lives – ‘You know, we have two very unpopular candidates. We have Biden or we have Trump. These are very unpopular.’” Watched by a crowd of adoring fans in Make America Great Again (Maga) regalia, against the backdrop of a plane marked “Trump” in giant gold letters, the former US president protested a little too much: “I’m not unpopular!” Opinion polls disagree, showing Trump with a low approval rating thanks to voter concerns over his stance on abortion, his four criminal cases and the threat he poses to constitutional democracy. Fortunately for the Republican presidential nominee, Biden has job performance troubles of his own centred on inflation, immigration and his handling of the war in Gaza. Call it the resistible force against the movable object. Six months out from one of the most consequential elections in American history, …
