Abdul El-Sayed is the latest Muslim candidate to labeled an anti-American extremist.

Abdul El-Sayed is the latest Muslim candidate to labeled an anti-American extremist.

Muslims are embroiled in yet another war, but this one isn’t in the Middle East, Southeast Asia or another predominantly Islamic region. The battleground is Michigan. New York. Minnesota. Or anywhere else in the U.S. where a politician with a name like Abdul El-Sayed, Zohran Mamdani or Ilhan Omar have run for office — and won. Today’s primary target is Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate candidate El-Sayed. Since his victory in August, the right’s main strategy to beat him this fall is a familiar one: paint El-Sayed, the Muslim son of Egyptian immigrants, as an anti-American extremist. Vice President JD Vance recently told a crowd that “there’s something about Abdul El-Sayed that is very, very evil,” suggesting that Democratic nominee represents a divisive ideology. Rep. Nancy Mace warned of a larger problem when she said that “every single Muslim holding public office in America” is “a threat to both national security and our republic.” Sen. Tommy Tuberville flat-out called El-Sayed a “terrorist.” “The message is that these candidates are a civilizational threat that is going to …

‘Li’l Abner,’ ‘Manchurian Candidate’ Star Was 90

Leslie Parrish, who starred as the hopelessly in love Daisy Mae in the Paramount Pictures musical Li’l Abner and sported a Queen of Diamonds costume for The Manchurian Candidate, has died. She was 90. Parrish lived in Washington state and died late last year, Erica Berdan, a daughter of the actress’ second husband, Jonathan Livingston Seagull author Richard Bach, told The Hollywood Reporter. THR only recently learned of her death. Parrish also starred opposite Vic Morrow (as Dutch Schultz) in Portrait of a Mobster (1961); was one of Thelma Ritter’s daughters (Mitzi Gaynor and Julie Newmar were the others) in For Love or Money (1963), starring Kirk Douglas; and played a Janet Leigh patient who dated Jerry Lewis in Three on a Couch (1966). In two memorable guest-starring turns on television in 1967, she portrayed USS Enterprise archaeology and anthropology officer Carolyn Palamas on the Star Trek episode “Who Mourns for Adonais?” and was Glacia Glaze, a lovely ice skater and henchwoman in cahoots with Mr. Freeze (Eli Wallach), on Batman. After Edie Adams starred as Daisy …

‘Blessed’: Frederick Haynes, pastor and candidate, on his politics, faith and health

‘Blessed’: Frederick Haynes, pastor and candidate, on his politics, faith and health

WASHINGTON (RNS) — When the Rev. Frederick D. Haynes III recently visited Capitol Hill with other members of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, he did so as a Texas pastor as well as a candidate for an office there representing his congressional district. “One of the challenges that I offered was the fact that we have to be ready for the voter suppression and voter intimidation tactics that I believe are being promised,” he said of political opponents during an interview Tuesday (July 21) at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, where the PNBC’s annual session was held through Thursday. “This election — and it’s said every year — but this more than ever is the most important election that will determine, as far as I’m concerned, if this nation is going to be what it aspires to be by way of a democracy, or are we going to just remove all of the guardrails and let the wheels fall off while the oligarchs and the plutocrats run away rich and run away wealthy.” With decades of …

Duckworth opposes candidate to replace Platner: ‘Maine deserves better’

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) on Thursday urged Democratic Maine Senate candidate Nirav Shah to end his newly launched campaign, reviving prior criticism of his handling of a deadly Legionnaires’ disease outbreak while he led Illinois’ public health department. “Maine deserves better than someone who put his public image before the safety of our Veterans,” Duckworth… Source link

Exclusive: Reform Candidate Admitted Brexit 'Exacerbated' UK Worker Shortage

Sian Astley Reform UK’s candidate for the Greater Manchester mayoral race admitted Brexit “exacerbated” shortages in tradespeople, HuffPost UK can reveal. Sian Astley made the comments on finance website Love Money in 2019. Despite voting Leave in the 2016 EU referendum, she wrote: “There’s a massive shortage of skilled builders and tradespeople in the UK and that’ll be exacerbated post-Brexit”. The Reform councillor’s comments emerged as she prepares to take on Labour’s Bev Craig in the mayoral by-election on July 30. In separate comments on X in 2018, she defended her decision to back Brexit. She said: “I couldn’t give a rats ass if people don’t like that I voted Out. Already ghosted by politico bullies & virtue signalling ‘friends’, viewed as not on the ‘right side’.” Reform UK has been approached for comment. Astley is hoping to replace Andy Burnham as Greater Manchester mayor after he won the Makerfield by-election last month. Labour’s Bev Craig is currently the frontrunner to replace him in the July 30 poll. A June survey carried out by FocalData for campaign …

Comedian Drew Carey blasts LA mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt in expletive-filled rant for voters

Comedian Drew Carey blasts LA mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt in expletive-filled rant for voters

Drew Carey has eviscerated Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt and his supporters in an unsavory social media rant. Pratt, 42, best known for playing the villain on the reality series The Hills alongside his wife Heidi Montag, announced his bid for LA mayor in January. He is campaigning on a platform aimed at taking down “California’s entrenched political establishment,” which he blames for the devastation of his Pacific Palisades neighborhood and surrounding areas during the 2025 LA wildfires. In a recent Threads post, Carey, 68, advised against voting for the reality star, telling anyone who plans to do so to “get their head out of their ass.” “I understand being angry/unsatisfied, but at least get behind someone competent and not some serial scammer without a soul or moral compass,” the Price is Right host added. “F*** this guy already.” The Independent has contacted Pratt’s representative for comment. Drew Carey (left) slammed Spencer Pratt (right), calling him a ‘serial scammer’ with no ‘soul or moral compass’ (Getty) Pratt is one of 12 candidates challenging incumbent …

The Apprentice winner Karishma was best candidate Lord Sugar’s picked in 20 years

The Apprentice winner Karishma was best candidate Lord Sugar’s picked in 20 years

Let’s be honest – no Apprentice 2026 candidate stood a chance against Karishma Vijay, arguably the best contestant the BBC show has ever had. The 29-year-old beauty brand owner secured Lord Sugar’s £250,000 investment for her skincare business, which she launched after discovering a “cure” for her acne – and it was glaringly inevitable from week one that she would win the series. In all 20 years of the show, there has not been a contestant who has exuded such likeability, justifiable confidence, and, believe it or not, common sense. Not even her finale rival Pascha Myhill, whose evolution throughout the series was a joy to watch, could rival Karishma. Pascha – the show’s youngest contestant at 21 – was seeking investment for her recruitment business and, in the last episode, nailed a pitch to a room filled with business experts, which, by her own admission, she would not have been able to do at the start of the competition. Kudos to her. Karishma Vijay aced this year’s series of ‘The Apprentice’ (BBC) But while Pascha …

‘The Candidate’ Screenwriter Was 88

‘The Candidate’ Screenwriter Was 88

Jeremy Larner, whose experience as a speechwriter for 1968 presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy informed his Oscar-winning screenplay for the Robert Redford-starring The Candidate, has died. He was 88. Larner had been ill for some time and died Feb. 24 in a nursing facility in Oakland, California, his son Jesse Larner told The Hollywood Reporter. For his only other produced screenplay, Larner adapted his 1964 novel Drive, He Said, for the audacious basketball-centric 1971 film of the same name that marked the feature directorial debut of Jack Nicholson. Larner had joined McCarthy on the campaign trail in March 1968, with the Minnesota senator, running on a platform to end the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, attempting to secure the Democratic Party’s nomination for president. McCarthy appeared on his way to victory, but following the withdrawal of President Lyndon Johnson from the race and the assassination of fellow candidate Robert F. Kennedy, the nomination would go to Vice President Hubert Humphrey. After writing Nobody Knows: Reflections on the McCarthy Campaign of 1968, a book that gained …
