Spiritbox review – Canadian metal ranges from gothic and guttural to Auto-Tune pop

Spiritbox review – Canadian metal ranges from gothic and guttural to Auto-Tune pop

At tonight’s Spiritbox show, vocalist Courtney LaPlante addresses the anxiety and isolation of the Canadian band’s origins: “We grew up on Vancouver Island, far away from our dreams.” Now touring Europe in support of their acclaimed 2025 album Tsunami Sea, Spiritbox show no trace of these early struggles, delivering a confident, polished performance of anthemic metal. This UK tour follows a US run opening for nu-metal icons Evanescence, with whom they share a fascination with the musical tension between hard and soft – and in LaPlante, a compelling gothic frontperson. They share a flexible approach to genre with much contemporary metalcore, deftly incorporating elements of drum’n’bass, R&B and industrial music. Circle With Me has Running Up That Hill-esque drums and reverb-laden guitar. The EDM-inflected Crystal Roses doesn’t completely gel, but LaPlante’s Auto-Tuned vocals add an interesting new texture to the mix. Extreme polish … Spiritbox. Photograph: Alana Ann Lopez Flanked by bassist Josh Gilbert and guitarist Mike Stringer, LaPlante is the anchor of the band’s dynamism, known for both her guttural metal scream (exceptional during …

UK, Canadian TV Pioneer Was 97

Pip Wedge, a broadcast pioneer who helped shape the British and Canadian private TV businesses when first getting off the ground, has died. He was 97. Wedge passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on April 15 in Toronto from natural causes after feeling unwell and taking a nap from which he never woke, his wife, Lis Wedge, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. “After nearly 61 years of marriage, I am missing him tremendously,” she said in a statement. Born on Dec. 2, 1928 in Forest Hill, in southeast London, U.K., Wedge was named Philip by his parents so that they might call him Pip, after the Charles Dickens character in the classic Great Expectations novel. Following high school studies during the turbulent Second World War, Wedge in May 1946 took a job as a clerk and switchboard operator at a London advertising agency, before joining the UK Navy as a telegraph operator. It was while Wedge monitored the airwaves around Glasgow Harbor aboard a navy ship that he also listened to the American Forces Network radio …

Why Is “Canadian Warren Buffett” Panic-Buying Under Armour Stock

Why Is “Canadian Warren Buffett” Panic-Buying Under Armour Stock

Our shift in coverage on Under Armour began in late September, when we flagged a UBS report from analyst Jay Sole, who forecasted a major inflection point for the long-struggling Baltimore-based apparel company. Sole argued that sentiment would turn positive in FY27, setting the stage for stock outperformance. That bullish thesis has certainly seen its timeline accelerated, with a surge in heavy insider buying igniting a sharp rally this month. Shares of UAA have surged this month, with year-to-date gains of 27.5%. If these gains hold through year-end, it would mark the best year for Kevin Plank’s company since 2014. Let’s begin with UBS analyst Sole’s inflection point call after a ten-year bear market: Then what really piqued our interest was Fairfax Financial Holdings’ disclosure earlier this month of a 22.2% ownership stake in UA, making it the company’s largest shareholder. Insider buying has continued. Bloomberg insider transaction data shows Fairfax Financial continues to panic-buy UA stock, with 5 million more shares disclosed on Wednesday. Last week, the firm bought 3.61 million shares. Latest data …

Canadian Military Exploring Taliban-Like Insurgent Tactics to Repel American Invasion

Stacey Newman/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images While the United States under Donald Trump escalates tensions with its longstanding geopolitical allies, its neighbor to the north is growing increasingly wary of its antics. Recently, Canada has announced a number of moves viewed as part of a pivot away from close ties to the United States. Over the weekend, Canadian prime minister Mark Carney announced a strategic partnership with the People’s Republic of China. The commercial agreement involved reduced tariff rates on Chinese energy, technology, and consumer goods like EVs, which will see their tariff rate fall from 100 percent to just 6.1 percent. That announcement dominated headlines over the weekend, but Canada’s also preparing for worsening relations in less obvious ways. One of them is by drawing up military models to repel a theoretical invasion from the US — the first time in a century that Canadian Armed Forces have done so. The extraordinary news was reported by the Globe and Mail, a major Canadian newspaper which spoke to a number of anonymous military officials working …

Canadian Dementia Patient Euthanized at Family’s Request

Canadian Dementia Patient Euthanized at Family’s Request

This article is republished from National Review with the permission of the author. Euthanasia/assisted suicide “protective guidelines” don’t really protect against abuse. They mostly serve as window dressings to make people comfortable with killing the sick. And soon after legalization, the vaunted protections are redefined by activists and the media as “barriers” to death, which become the pretext for loosening the already slack guidelines. The speed at which that happens varies, but the pattern rarely fails. Here’s an example. In Canada, a person is supposed to explicitly request and consent to being killed by a lethal jab. But a dementia patient was recently euthanized at the request of her family. From the National Post story: A frail women in her late 80s with dementia received MAID after a family member brought forward a request for an assisted death, a new report reveals. The woman’s life was ended after a MAID provider deemed the woman had given her final expressed consent to proceed, based on her ability to repeat a question and squeeze the provider’s hand.
