Locals baffled after 100 security cameras spotted at Tesco checkout

A Tesco store has been jokingly dubbed “Britain’s most secure supermarket” after around 80 security cameras were spotted above its checkout area. Charlotte Mason, 22, filmed the bizarre sight at the Burgess Hill, Sussex, branch while waiting at the self-checkouts. Her TikTok video has since attracted almost two million views, with viewers joking about the huge number of cameras and questioning why so many are needed. Source link

Cameras we owned way before the 1970s

I was astounded by Viv Groskop’s comment that “Most people didn’t own cameras” in the 1970s (‘It looked stunning on Joanna Lumley!’, 25 August). This might have been true in the early 20th century, but even my mother, born in 1916, had her faithful Box Brownie, with which she took photos of family and friends in the 40s and 50s, and later I was taking slides on an Agfa Silette 35mm in the 1960s.Marie PatersonNuneaton, Warwickshire Re your editorial on writers’ abodes (18 August) and Michael Wild’s letter (20 August), I should like to point out that a cottage on the Newstead Abbey estate was the home of the bestselling novelist Dorothy Whipple for several years in the 1930s, and is the setting for her 1939 novel, The Priory.Jeremy HiltonBridport, Dorset “Nothing can beat stepping inside the world of a writer by staying in their home,” says Dr David Rudrum (Letters, 25 August). Vacation cameras: The best of the best

Vacation cameras: The best of the best

Packing your bags for a trip can be a daunting task. Unfortunately, I can’t help you with clothes, toiletries, and other essentials you’ll need to bring on your vacation. However, I can help you lighten your load when it comes to packing a camera. Over the years, I have packed several different cameras from point-and-shoots like the Nikon Coolpix, mirrorless shooters like the Panasonic Lumix, expensive cinema devices like the Sony FX30, and even the Flip Video (remember those?!). Contents of my camera travel bag from left to right: MyFirst Camera 50, Insta360 Luna Ultra, iPhone 15 Pro Max Credit: Matt Binder / Mashable Credit: Matt Binder / Mashable This year, I discovered the perfect camera — or really, combination of devices that include cameras — that significantly lightened my travel load. Not only that, the photos and videos I took came out better than ever before, and I was able to still spend the majority of my time just enjoying my vacation. Plus, as an added bonus, I found that I took way more …

from wearable cameras to exoskeletons, here are the technologies the film predicted

from wearable cameras to exoskeletons, here are the technologies the film predicted

Director James Cameron’s acclaimed sci-fi movie Aliens turns 40 in August. It’s a sequel to Ridley Scott’s claustrophobic breakout hit Alien, made in 1979. Where the original featured one terrifying creature, Cameron’s movie features hundreds – and pits them against a squad of space marines. A host of intriguing technologies make an appearance, including interstellar travel, hypersleep (where humans are preserved in stasis for long space journeys) and terraforming (making other worlds liveable for humans). Some of the technologies in the film have already come to pass – or look likely to soon. But others were missed and some remain firmly in the realms of science fiction. In Aliens, the marines travel to a distant moon to investigate the disappearance of over 100 human settlers. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), the main protagonist of the first film, goes along to advise. On arrival, they run into a six-year-old girl, called Newt, who managed to escape the grisly fate of the other colonists. When the marines encounter the alien hive, chaos and carnage ensue. The technology featured …

All ICE Enforcement Officers In Maine Equipped With Body-Worn Cameras, Sen. Collins Says

All ICE Enforcement Officers In Maine Equipped With Body-Worn Cameras, Sen. Collins Says

Authored by Owen Evans via The Epoch Times, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said Friday that all Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Maine have been given body-worn cameras and trained how to use them. Acting ICE Director David Venturella announced on Aug. 8 that federal agents would be equipped with body-worn cameras by the end of the month in a move to increase “transparency and accountability.” The cameras are a key measure that congressional Democrats demanded during a months-long dispute earlier this year over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In an Aug. 13 post on X, Collins said that she was pleased that as of 2 p.m. on Thursday, all ICE officers in Maine “have been equipped with body-worn cameras and trained in their use.” Collins said that when she spoke to Venturella last month, he committed to deliver body-worn cameras to ICE agents across the country by the end of August. “I urged him to prioritize Maine, and they have arrived more than two weeks ahead of schedule,” she added. …

My Ring camera’s AI video descriptions are freaking me out

My Ring camera’s AI video descriptions are freaking me out

We recently updated our Ring video camera to the Ring Wired Doorbell Elite (2nd Gen) and have had a Pro subscription for some time. One of the latest upgrades with a compatible camera and Pro subscription is not only basic motion alerts but also descriptive alerts. These Gen AI-powered updates, which were introduced a year ago, offer more detail about what’s going on at your front door. So, you don’t only know that motion was detected, but what specifically is happening. This has come in handy in so many instances, especially with the lock screen preview capability. But it’s also admittedly freaking me out. I found it jarring at first, and while I have since grown accustomed to the feature over the last few weeks, I’m still unsure of how I feel about it. Related I connected my smart lights to my doorbell and it’s a security game-changer This makes it look like someone is home when I need it to. The alerts are eerily accurate (most of the time) It describes events in detail …

At Delaney Hall, the struggle persists after cameras left

At Delaney Hall, the struggle persists after cameras left

While the hunger and labor strike at the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in New Jersey ended weeks ago, conditions within the facility have not improved, and may be even worse than before the strike there. Now, policies are seemingly directed at obscuring conditions in the for-profit facility operated by The GEO Group. In May of 2025, Delaney Hall, which operated as a holding facility for those picked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement from 2011 to 2017, was recommissioned to support President Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda. On May 22, detainees at Delaney Hall launched a hunger and labor strike at the facility, capturing national attention to what they described as inhumane conditions in the facility. In particular, detainees described unsanitary, moldy or spoiled food and mistreatment by guards. The strike led to significant protests outside the Newark, New Jersey, detention center, and high-profile clashes between protesters and the guards there as well as a frenzy of attention from the national press. On June 22, advocates for detainees there said that the strike had …

The Valley Picks Up Cameras to Capture Jax, Lori Publicist Fallout

The Valley Picks Up Cameras to Capture Jax, Lori Publicist Fallout

The Valley has picked up cameras on its third season after TMZ published photos of Jax Taylor vacationing with he and Brittany Cartwright‘s longtime publicist Lori Krebs, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The photos, shared on Monday via the outlet, saw Taylor and Krebs embracing closely in a pool in Mexico. Witnesses also told TMZ the pair “were getting close and hugging throughout the day and weren’t trying to hide they were together.” In September 2024, a blind item emerged that alleged Cartwright’s ex-husband and former publicist (whom she reportedly fired after the photos came out) hooked up in a bathroom during a work trip to Canada. Cartwright denied the claims on her podcast, saying that Krebs was a “very, very good friend” and an “amazing publicist.” The Valley is currently airing its third season, while the reunion episodes have already been filmed, meaning Bravo picked up production seemingly as most of the installment footage had already been captured. While Taylor is at the core of this off-camera scandal, he has not filmed any additional …

Sigma BF Review (2026): Eccentric but Strangely Lovable

Sigma BF Review (2026): Eccentric but Strangely Lovable

Then there’s the missing removable storage. Yes, I’d prefer a card; it’s just easier to swap out a card in the field. But the BF does have 256 gigabytes of built-in storage. I can’t think of the last time I shot enough images to fill that much space before getting back to my laptop to download them. Which is to say that 256-gigabytes of storage is plenty for the nonprofessional photographer. Photograph: Scott Gilbertson The main deal-breaker for me is the lack of a viewfinder. I still prefer to shoot through a viewfinder. It’s just muscle memory—hand me a camera, and I will bring it to my eye. If you love a viewfinder, too, this is not the camera for you. Another problem with the lack of a viewfinder is that the rear screen is nearly unusable in bright sunlight. It’s just too dark to compose accurately. The rear screen also doesn’t tilt or move at all, which means if you like to shoot from the hip, you won’t be able to use it at …
