Alaska Native leaders call to preserve Denali name for Mount McKinley

Alaska Native leaders call to preserve Denali name for Mount McKinley

(RNS) — In his second inauguration address on Monday (Jan. 20), President Donald Trump repeated his customary campaign speech promises to improve the United States’ credibility around the world, but after one such vow the president surprised some by announcing America’s resurgence would entail new names for some familiar geographical features. “A short time from now we are going to be changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Trump said, “and we will restore the name of a great president, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley, where it should be and where it belongs.” A few hours later he signed an executive order doing just that. Alaska Native leaders, as well as state politicians, object that the order undoes years of work with the federal government to establish Denali as the rightful name. “Located on the traditional homelands of the Dene peoples, it reflects a profound spiritual and cultural relationship with the land,” said Emily Edenshaw, president and CEO of the Alaska Native Heritage Center. “Keeping this name honors that connection and recognizes …

Judge and parents call for boys to be protected from circumcision

Judge and parents call for boys to be protected from circumcision

A judge, parents and police have called for boys to be protected from the harms of ritual circumcision. The calls came on Wednesday during the sentencing of Mohammad Siddiqui, an ex-doctor who was given a five-year custodial sentence for child cruelty and actual bodily harm related to ritual circumcisions of boys. Siddiqui also pled guilty to administering prescription only medications in some of the circumcisions. In his sentencing remarks at London Inner Crown Court, judge Noel Lucas KC said the case has shown that “safeguards and protections must now be put in place and put in place as a matter of urgency, to ensure that babies and young children are protected.” Lucas also noted the calls of parents of Siddiqui’s victims for boys to be protected: “[one boy’s] mother describes the unregulated nature of non-therapeutic circumcisions as being absurd and endangering the health of children.” “The fact Siddiqui could carry on with such impunity and affect so many innocent lives is surely all the evidence that is needed to ensure this gap in legislation is …

Parliamentary humanists call for end of ‘prayer privilege’ in the Commons

Parliamentary humanists call for end of ‘prayer privilege’ in the Commons

Limited seating: Backbenchers who pray are more likely to get to sit or speak in a busy debate The All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group (APPHG) has called for an end to ‘prayer privilege’ in the House of Commons. It has done so in response to a call for evidence by the Modernisation Committee. The Committee was set up after the King’s Speech to consider ‘reforms to House of Commons procedures, standards, and working practices.’ The APPHG called for an end to the current practices of having prayers at the start of every session and allocating seats for the day based on attendance at those prayers; and the lack of a non-religious pastoral carer. Currently every day in the Commons starts with Anglican prayers, even though most people are non-religious and this is currently the most non-religious Parliament ever. This is only made worse by the system of prayer cards. MPs who attend prayers can use a prayer card to reserve their seat for the rest of the day. As there are only 427 seats for 650 …

Peers call for end to bishops in the Lords

Peers call for end to bishops in the Lords

Yesterday peers from across the Lords raised the unfair and undemocratic place of the bishops in the House of Lords at the second reading of the House of Lords (Hereditary Peers) Bill. Currently 26 bishops of the Church of England sit, as of right, in the House of Lords. Although the bill being discussed was focused on removing the hereditary peers from the Lords it was clear that many in the House – including members of the All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group (APPHG) – wanted the bishops to join them. Crossbench APPHG peer Lord Birt described the bishops as a ‘feudal overhang’ and remarked that the Church of England is ‘not even a church for the whole of the United Kingdom’. He said the Church is ‘losing moral authority’. Labour peers Lord Foulkes and Lord Rooker, both APPHG members, said that ‘we need to consider whether it is right that members from one Church… should have an automatic right to membership of this Chamber’ and ‘I would vote to remove the cleric from lawmaking’ respectively. Meanwhile …

Protestors Call for Boycott on Art Basel Until Miami Divests from Israel

Protestors Call for Boycott on Art Basel Until Miami Divests from Israel

A coalition of Miami-based advocacy groups staged a protest outside of the Miami Beach Convention Center on the second public day of Art Basel, calling for attendees to boycott the fair until the city of Miami and Miami Dade County divest from large-scale investments in Israel. Cristina Rivera, an artist and technologist, told ARTnews that organizers are using Art Basel, one of Miami’s biggest tourist attractions, as a platform to amplify concerns about Israel’s war in Gaza. The artist said advocates take issue with Miami Beach’s investment in Israel Bonds, which the city doubled to $20 million last year, framing the protest as a way to oppose policies they associate with the ongoing violence in the Middle East. Related Articles Four advocacy groups organized Saturday’s protest, including South Florida’s Justice for Palestine chapter and a local chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). Hayley Margolis, an activist with JVP, told ARTnews that she hopes the demonstration challenges the public’s complacency around the carnage in Gaza. The action was concieved as part of the organization’s ongoing “Break …

Peers from all parties call for action on humanist marriages

Peers from all parties call for action on humanist marriages

During oral questions in the House of Lords today, Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, and crossbench peers called for the Government to act on legal recognition of humanist marriages. This is the second oral question on the subject asked in the Lords in the last two months. Humanists UK leads the campaign for the legal recognition of humanist marriages and welcomes the support expressed by peers. It expressed its disappointment that the Government has not yet committed to immediate reform, despite supporting this measure for over ten years while in opposition. Labour peer Lord Watson summarised the frustration felt by humanist couples across England and Wales when he said ‘Can I put it to [the Minister] that this is an equalities issue, and it offers the Government the chance to extend laws that exist for some UK citizens to all of us?’ Baroness Thornton, a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group (APPHG), tabled the question. Labour peer Lord Dubs, also an APPHG member, spoke on her behalf. He asked whether the Government conducted an equality …
