A ‘Flying’ Tesla Roadster Sounds Impossible, Until You See What Lockheed Martin Built Decades Ago

Thrusters are as good at flipping cars as they are at hunting ballistic missiles. Tesla Tesla’s long-delayed and still unreleased Tesla Roadster was formally reintroduced on October 15 and besides an angular, Cybertruck-esque design and the ability to go 0-60 mph in less than a second, the company’s big surprise was that it can fly. The car can’t really “fly” in the tradition of Back to the Future Part II, but more through a collection of controlled falling, jumping and flipping maneuvers. While admittedly impressive, the concept isn’t unique to Tesla. Experimental missile defense systems have featured similar uses of thrusters since at least the early 2000s, in a form factor that’s now called a Multiple Kill Vehicle or MKV. In the case of the Roadster, the supercar is able to pull off its much lauded kickflips thanks to two high-pressure air tanks and ten nozzles placed throughout the car that fire off compressed air to move and stabilize it. Tesla claims the Roadster can refill those tanks on its own, though the …

FDA approves once-daily Parkinson’s pill (Juvmo) built on decades of work by husband-and-wife team

FDA approves once-daily Parkinson’s pill (Juvmo) built on decades of work by husband-and-wife team

The FDA approved Juvmo, a once-daily tavapadon pill that selectively activates D1 and D5 dopamine receptors, for adults with Parkinson’s disease. Trials found improved movement-related scores in early disease and about 1.1 additional hours of daily good “on” time when added to levodopa. UVA researchers helped establish the approach, but Juvmo treats symptoms and has not been shown to stop nerve-cell loss or slow Parkinson’s progression. A once-daily Parkinson’s pill has reached FDA approval after decades of work on a dopamine pathway that early treatments largely overlooked. Tavapadon, sold as Juvmo, offers adults another way to manage movement symptoms, either alone or alongside levodopa. It directly stimulates selected dopamine receptors instead of being converted into dopamine. The approval expands treatment options without establishing a cure or a way to halt the disease. The FDA approved the drug September 25, and AbbVie announced plans to make it available in October. Research by University of Virginia scientists Richard Mailman and Xuemei Huang helped establish the case for targeting D1-like receptors. The clinical evidence is published in TEMPO-1, …

Google Play now supports private, vibe-coded apps built just for you

Google Play now supports private, vibe-coded apps built just for you

Your vibe-coded applications can now be easily run on Android smartphones without having to first go public on the Google Play Store, the tech giant announced on Tuesday. A new feature will allow users to launch their own personal apps on their device via Google Play using their standard Google account, but they will remain completely private. These personal apps won’t show up in Google Play’s search or listing pages, and won’t be shared with anyone except for the app’s creator. The idea comes as more people are experimenting with building their own applications via AI for specific, personal needs. However, being able to use that app on their own Android device has meant publishing to Google Play, making it accessible to the Play Store’s some 3 billion users. That led many to limit their vibe-coding efforts to web apps that could run on any device instead of something built natively for Android. Now, Google says Android device owners can vibe code an app using Google AI Studio, then launch it for their own use. …

AlterMe Review: Fitness Built Around My DNA

AlterMe Review: Fitness Built Around My DNA

This type of health tracking is similar to what you get with Oura’s Ring 5 offering. The key difference is that AlterMe is a more closed ecosystem, combining its wearable data with its own genetic insights to generate an AI-powered workout plan every day based on my biometrics. Oura, meanwhile, provides detailed sleep, activity, readiness, and broader health insights as well as guided fitness content within its app and integration with services such as Apple Health. Its primary focus, however, remains tracking and interpreting your health and activity data, whereas AlterMe puts more emphasis on the personalized workouts it prescribes. The ring has a titanium outer frame and comes in either a gold finish, silver, or Stealth black. My gold finish has picked up some scuff marks over the couple of months I’ve been wearing it. While the gold finish looks good, I found the ring quite bulky—and thicker than the sleek Oura Ring 5—which means it sometimes gets in the way when I’m lifting weights. Tailored Workouts Depending on ‘Readiness’ Score Within the stats …

How Centennial College paramedic graduate David Goodman built an award-winning first aid training company

How Centennial College paramedic graduate David Goodman built an award-winning first aid training company

For David Goodman, a career in healthcare and emergency medicine was always the goal. When that wasn’t enough, he built his own company from the ground up A graduate of the Centennial College Paramedic Programme, David Goodman is now the CEO of Heaven Can Wait First Aid, a nationally recognised, award-winning first aid and CPR training company. His path from student to entrepreneur shows how the hands-on training and real-world pressure of paramedicine can open doors beyond the ambulance, including business ownership. Getting into medicine and choosing paramedic training “I always wanted to become a physician, and I took the courses I needed to write the MCAT,” Goodman said. But as his undergraduate studies progressed, he started to reassess. “I took molecular immunology and did a neuropsychology degree,” he said. “It was fascinating, but I didn’t want to do a Master’s. “I was at a campus event speaking to someone who came back for a reunion,” he said. “He went to Centennial College for paramedicine, and said the programme is awesome.” That conversation changed everything. …

This mum turned her children’s old clothes into keepsakes – then built a business from it

Nur’ain, who worked in an administrative role until she got laid off in 2020 during the pandemic, said that her home business now earns her almost as much as her former job. MAKING NEW MEMORIES WITH OLD CLOTHES One of her most difficult jobs arrived in three big bags two years ago. In them were more than 200 pieces of baby, toddler and children’s clothes tracing the life of someone’s beloved child. The child’s mother requested for three large quilts – one for her, one for the father and one for the child, who was around seven then and unwell, Nur’ain said. “I didn’t ask a lot because I wanted to respect their privacy, but it felt like it might be a serious illness,” she shared. “When I first received the clothes, I couldn’t touch them for a week. It was quite hard for me to start cutting up the clothes. As a mother myself, I could imagine how painful it would be for the parents,” she said. “When I first started this keepsake business, …

How This Tiny Startup Built the World’s Safest Bike Helmet

How This Tiny Startup Built the World’s Safest Bike Helmet

Pikio’s closest rival, the Release Layer System (RLS), featured on Canyon’s Deflectr and the third-placed, 3D-printed Hexr Miden RLS, tackles rotation from the outside, using external shell panels floating on tiny polycarbonate ball bearings that can roll and detach, redirecting rotational energy before it reaches the head. Lab testing is one thing, but real-world data is something else. If your Pikio helmet is called into serious action, you will need to replace it—as with most EPS foam designs—but the company is offering a 30 percent discount on a replacement if it can get its hands on your damaged helmet. “So far we’ve had four helmets returned and replaced,” Abram says. “Each has proven invaluable, not least because they’ve done their job and kept riders safe.” At $379, the Pikio is a premium choice—a cool $219 more expensive than the second-best STAR-tested Canyon Deflectr RLS. Much of the cost stems from a vastly more complicated manufacturing process. Abram says a standard cycling helmet has around eight to 10 parts, but the Pikio Si uses around 80 …

Your RAM has been running at 2014 speeds since the day you built your PC because of one switch

Your RAM has been running at 2014 speeds since the day you built your PC because of one switch

Even with decades of experience building PCs across multiple generations, it still takes me hours to properly set up a system before it’s fully tuned to utilize all of its horsepower. The BIOS menu alone has multiple switches that need to be flipped before your components perfectly sync with each other. Specifically for RAM, I’ve seen many PC users running it at a lower speed than what it’s advertised for, and it’s not even their fault. For the sake of compatibility, your computer will set the RAM speeds to the baseline, which is more than a decade old for DDR4 systems. Related My computer felt slow for months until I realized my RAM was never running at full speed A simple BIOS setting unlocked the full speed my RAM promised. Your RAM is running slower than you paid for Your PC defaults to a safe JEDEC profile instead of the rated one Shaheer Khan/MUO Every RAM stick has a JEDEC-compliant speed profile, an organization that sets standards for RAM frequency, timing, and voltages. DDR4 starts …

Mosasaur tails reveal which ancient ocean predators were built for surprise attacks

Mosasaur tails reveal which ancient ocean predators were built for surprise attacks

Fossil-based models suggest Platecarpus and Tylosaurus could launch faster lunges for their body size than Mosasaurus and Plotosaurus. A scaled model of a particularly large Tylosaurus reached an estimated 15 mph after one tail stroke under selected conditions. The findings support different hunting strategies, but reconstructed muscles and simplified swimming mechanics leave exact speeds uncertain. A single sweep of its tail could have sent a giant Tylosaurus lunging forward at roughly 15 miles per hour. That modeled burst offers a glimpse of how an enormous marine reptile might have closed the gap on prey. The estimate comes from a Rutgers University-led biomechanical study published in Current Biology. Kiersten Formoso, an assistant professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources, led the research. Her team used reconstructed skeletons and physics to compare sudden acceleration in four kinds of mosasaurs. The analysis suggests that different tail proportions favored different hunting strategies. Platecarpus and Tylosaurus consistently outperformed Mosasaurus and Plotosaurus in lunges relative to body size. Those differences were more reliable than the calculated speeds themselves, …

‘My dog’s built her own fashion community’: how canine companions stole the fashion week spotlight | Fashion

The front row at a fashion week show is a known hotspot for celebrities. During the most recent iteration that wrapped up on Tuesday, sightings included Heathcliff, AKA Jacob Elordi, high-fiving the Adolescence star Owen Cooper at Bottega Veneta; Rihanna arriving 63 minutes late to the Matières Fécales show; and Dua Lipa gossiping with Nicole Kidman and Pedro Pascal at Chanel. But peppered in among the Hollywood crowd was another type of guest going head-to-head for the photographers’ attention: dogs. From a cavapoo at Louis Vuitton to a shih tzu at Schiaparelli, four-legged companions – rather than designer bags – sat on the laps of many showgoers. At the Balenciaga show, Brooklyn Beckham and Nicole Peltz sat next to Miranda Priestly – no, not Meryl Streep in her Devil Wears Prada character, but the brand’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s rescue dog. Tommy Hilfiger took his post-show bow with a fluffy samoyed – a look-a-like of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s pup who stars with Kelce in a campaign for the brand. Elsewhere, a miniature schnauzer …
