How to help Katmai’s brown bears this Fat Bear Week

This Fat Bear Week, bear enthusiasts from around the world can not only vote for their favorite chunky brown bears (Ursus arctos). They can actually help protect the bears’ home. Every donation made to the Katmai Conservancy’s Otis Fund through October 3, will be matched by explore.org, the organization that runs the bear livestreams at Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska.  The Otis Fund is named for the first Fat Bear Week Champion, Bear #480 (Otis). During the one-day event in 2014, called Fat Bear Tuesday, Otis was selected as champion over elder female Bear #410. He went on to take the crown again in 2016, 2017, and 2021 before his death in 2024. “His steadfast patience and determination when fishing at Brooks Falls gave many people a sense of calm,” former National Park Service (NPS) ranger and explore.org naturalist Mike Fitz tells Popular Science. “He was an ambassador for his species who helped people fall in love with Brooks River and its bears and, in turn, [worked] to protect the salmon runs that …

Apocalypse Blindness | Jerry Brown

Apocalypse Blindness | Jerry Brown

Ever since the end of the cold war, the subject of nuclear war and the profound threat it poses to humanity has suffered a “peculiar invisibility.” This is the phrase the German philosopher Günther Anders used in his book The Obsolescence of the Human (1956) to illuminate the roots of the “Apokalypse-Blindheit”—“apocalypse blindness”—that had begun to set in just a few years after the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.1 Seventy years on, despite the construction of gigantic nuclear arsenals and several near catastrophes, the blindness persists. Today each of America’s fourteen nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines is capable of launching 160 warheads with a combined explosive force of up to 73,000 kilotons, roughly the equivalent of five thousand Hiroshimas. The Russians possess a similar capability. A mere fraction of the nuclear weapons that exist today could kill millions of people within minutes. Hundreds of detonations could ignite massive fires, lofting soot into the atmosphere and blocking sunlight, potentially triggering a nuclear winter. The resulting disruption to global food systems would threaten billions of …

Strong Vaginal Smell And Brown Discharge? It Could Be A Retained Tampon

Strong Vaginal Smell And Brown Discharge? It Could Be A Retained Tampon

A GP has opened up about how a strong vaginal odour could signal a fairly common tampon error. In an Instagram post, Dr Nada Hassan spoke of “the smell every GP recognises instantly” – the strong odour emitted from a retained tampon. A retained tampon is pretty much what you’d expect it to be: a tampon which isn’t removed from the body and either gets stuck or seemingly gets forgotten about. Per the Women’s Health Practice, retained tampons are “fairly common”. Dr Hassan noted that sometimes she can tell if a patient has a retained tampon as soon as they’ve walked into the consulting room. “It’s more common to forget it than people think. Tampons shrink down with moisture, they migrate higher than expected, and it’s genuinely easy to forget one is there,” she said. “I’ve had to remove one (sometimes multiple) many a time from patients who had no idea it was in there.” Malte Mueller via Getty Images/fStop Retained tampons can leave a particularly grim odour. According to NHS Inform, tampons can’t get …

London Brown Responds to Marvin Death

London Brown Responds to Marvin Death

[This story contains MAJOR spoilers from the penultimate episode of season seven of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, “Penultimate Means Second to Last.”] The penultimate episode of Power Book III: Raising Kanan didn’t disappoint. Unlike the first episode, “By Blood,” where Lou-Lou’s death was unexpected, Marvin’s demise seemed inevitable in “Penultimate Means Second to Last.” But it’s not just that Marvin dies — it’s how he dies and who kills him. After the beatdown Marvin, played by London Brown, gave Kanan to close out episode five, “School of War,” Raising Kanan fans can’t be too surprised that Kanan comes around and kills Marvin. But the details do matter. And so does impact. This action by Mekai Curtis’ Kanan certainly aligns with 50 Cent’s portrayal of Kanan that fans know from the flagship Power series. But something else also happens in this next-to-last episode: Hailey Kilgore’s Jukebox also takes a step closer to how Power fans met her, as portrayed by Anika Noni Rose. She does this by not just finding out who killed her and …

Millie Bobby Brown in Netflix Threequel

Millie Bobby Brown in Netflix Threequel

When we were first introduced to her, Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister Enola was a fresh-faced teenager, extremely intelligent but inexperienced in the art of deduction. In the unimaginatively titled Enola Holmes 3, the second sequel to Netflix’s 2020 hit (no points for guessing the title of the preceding film), she’s all grown up and a seasoned detective who can give her brother a run for his money. And she’s about to be married to the handsome Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge), who is now a Lord. Millie Bobby Brown reprises her title role in this installment (adapted from Nancy Springer’s best-selling YA book series, which already numbers ten entries plus a short story), as Enola nervously prepares for her upcoming wedding to be held in Malta. Her being a Holmes, things tend to get in the way. In this case, it’s her brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill) being kidnapped, and not long afterward her future mother-in-law Lady Tewkesbury (Hattie Morahan) getting abducted as well. Enola has to solve the case with the aid of the trusty Dr. Watson …

What makes eggs go brown as Sainsbury’s stops selling them | UK | News

What makes eggs go brown as Sainsbury’s stops selling them | UK | News

After Sainsbury’s decision to ditch brown eggs and sell only white eggs, many Brits have been asking whether there is any nutritional difference between the two types and whether the move is a reason to switch their go-to supermarket. The reasoning behind the chain’s decision to switch to white eggs is their alleged 12.7% lower carbon footprint compared with brown eggs, according to Sainsbury’s own findings. This is because hens that lay white eggs consume less feed while producing the same number of eggs, reducing the resources required across the supply chain. Feed production accounts for 50–60% of the environmental impact of egg farming. Britain consumes around 14.5 billion eggs every year, producing an estimated 4.35 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in the process. If the entire industry achieved the same 12.7% reduction claimed by Sainsbury’s, emissions could fall by more than 550,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, The Independent reports. That’s roughly the same as removing nearly 300,000 cars from Britain’s roads. But what about the difference in quality? For most of the 20th …

Is Woody Brown Really the Author of his Novel?

Is Woody Brown Really the Author of his Novel?

On a recent morning at Rockefeller Center, NBC employees strolled through the crowd with copies of Upward Bound, the latest book-club pick from the Today show co-host Jenna Bush Hager. “It’s deeply heartfelt and moving,” Hager said, after holding up the debut novel from the 28-year-old Woody Brown, “and the reason it’s so authentic is that the author understands autism firsthand.” That understanding is indeed profound. Brown’s autism is such that he can barely speak, and he communicates mostly by pointing to letters, one by one, on a laminated board. This is also how his novel, which is already a New York Times best seller, came to be. In the recorded interview that followed Hager’s introduction, Brown’s mother, Mary, sat beside him, holding the letter board and reading his tapped-out messages. “I never thought there could be a life like this,” he spelled, after Hager asked him to reflect on the publication of the book. Upward Bound describes the different, sadder sort of life that could have been. “I had no way of letting people …

Millie Bobby Brown reveals her ‘ick’ for men, including fiancé Jake Bongiovi

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more A resurfaced interview with Millie Bobby Brown has gone viral on TikTok, in which she revealed some of her unique “icks”. Speaking with BBC Radio 1 to talk about her latest Netflix film, Damsel, the actress opened up about some of her “icks,” and how even her future husband is not immune. An ick is a mannerism or habit that is a turnoff, but it’s usually something minor like double texting or cutting a sandwich down the middle instead of diagonally. For the Stranger Things actress, one of hers is men who hold umbrellas. “There’s something about it that just feels really pathetic,” she told the interviewer. Although she did say that she attempted to give the idea a fair chance, as she added: “I tried to get on board with it. I did try.” In the middle of her sentence, …
