The President of Brooklyn | Nawal Arjini, Willa Glickman

It has been the curse of many New York City mayors to see themselves as viable presidential candidates, indeed with one foot already in the White House. If Eric Adams nurtured similar ambitions—as some commentators speculated early in his mayoralty—the difference was that his presidency of the mind was unusually focused on foreign policy. “If you are a mayor that only stands on your block, you are not going to solve the problems of the globe,” he said to reporters in 2022. That year, Adams met with the emir of Qatar and representatives from the country’s wealth fund at the World Cup, then stopped by Athens for a dinner with the president of Greece. In 2023 he visited Israel “to learn about Israeli technology” and discuss antisemitism. That same year he visited Mexico, Ecuador, and Colombia—where he sported quasi-military fatigues and sunglasses—to dissuade migrants from coming to the United States. “Here’s where I have been,” he said in 2023 at an Arab heritage event in New York City, wearing a fez. “I have been to …

Ahmed Abdul-Malik’s Afro-Arab Jazz | Nate Wooley

Ahmed Abdul-Malik’s Afro-Arab Jazz | Nate Wooley

The jazz bassist and composer Ahmed Abdul-Malik was born Jonathan Tim Jr. in Brownsville, Brooklyn, in 1927. Throughout his life Tim claimed Sudanese descent, but according to the historian Robin D. G. Kelley, his roots were actually Caribbean. In the Fifties it was not unusual for black musicians to search for new connections with their diasporic heritage. As immigrants arrived in American cities in greater numbers, there were more opportunities to discover the religions, languages, and music of Africa and the Middle East. In his book Africa Speaks, America Answers, Kelly describes “a Bedford Stuyvesant renaissance where a transplanted African culture thrived, Islam took root, and the international movement for Afro-Arab solidarity found its American champions.”1 Malik took spiritual inspiration from these surroundings, converting to Islam in his teens and learning Arabic. In high school he joined the Muslim Brotherhood, an offshoot of the Ahmadiyya movement that Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad founded in the Indian subcontinent in 1889. Ahmidayya found American footing in the 1920s, in Detroit, Chicago, and Harlem. It had many adherents among jazz …

The Brooklyn Museum Attempts General Interest Rebrand After 200 Years

The Brooklyn Museum Attempts General Interest Rebrand After 200 Years

Can a 200-year-old institution rebrand as cutting edge? The Brooklyn Museum of Art is attempting to do just that with its new logo design. The new “visual identity” of the museum entails a sans serif font, new ligatures featuring an overlapping ‘o’ in Brooklyn and a combined ‘u’ and ‘m’ at the end of museum, and two dots surrounding the institution’s name intended to mimic those that frame the names of ancient philosophers, playwrights, and poets on the building’s facade. “This reference to writers and thinkers links to our beginnings as a library and to the intersectional nature of the arts,” the museum stated in a release. Related Articles “In particular, the brand looks to the Museum’s iconic building, considering its evolution from an original neoclassical design by McKim, Mead & White to its moves toward modernism in the 1930s, to recent projects that have created more open and welcoming spaces. The brand draws on these elements from our past and unites them with our identity today as a contemporary institution,” it continued. The logo …

Colm Tóibín’s ‘Long Island’ sequel to ‘Brooklyn’

Colm Tóibín’s ‘Long Island’ sequel to ‘Brooklyn’

Sometimes a literary character’s hold on its author (and readers!) is too strong to ignore. While many sequels feel like attempts to milk a cash cow, others, like Elizabeth Strout’s Olive Kitteridge novels, bring fresh delight. Long Island, Colm Tóibín’s heartrending follow-up to his beloved 2009 novel, Brooklyn, is the rare instance in which a sequel is every bit as good as the original. Brooklyn, which was further popularized by the eponymous 2015 movie starring Saoirse Ronan, concerns a young Irish immigrant torn between her new home and her old one in the 1950s. Eilis Lacey, recently sent to America by her family for better prospects, returns to Enniscorthy in County Wexford, her hometown and Tóibín’s, for the funeral of her beloved older sister. Her mother, alone now that Rose is dead, doesn’t want Eilis to leave. But Eilis can’t bring herself to tell her — or anyone, including the man with whom she strikes up a romance — that she’s married to an Italian-American plumber she met at a dance in Brooklyn. Long Island …

At ‘Seder in the Streets,’ protesters in Brooklyn denounce US support to Israel

NEW YORK (RNS) — On Tuesday (April 23), the second night of the weeklong Passover holiday, thousands of New Yorkers filled Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn for a mass Seder dinner organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, IfNotNow, and Jews for Racial and Economic Justice. The sit-down protest, called “Seder in the Streets,” came as the U.S. Senate was preparing to pass a $95.3 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan after the House passed a series of parallel aid bills on Saturday.  Though Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was likely in Washington shepherding the measure, the crowd, gathered within shouting distance of the senator’s home, urged him to drop his support for the bill, which would send $26 billion to Israel for wartime assistance and to Gaza for humanitarian aid.  “Schumer, Schumer, talk is cheap. You’re sending bombs. How can you sleep?” chanted the crowd, and some held aloft signs accusing the Democrat of having received funds from pro-Israel group AIPAC to support the bill.  Demonstrators attend a “Seder in the Streets” event …

Carl Erskine, Dodgers pitcher in both Brooklyn and L.A., has died

Carl Erskine, Dodgers pitcher in both Brooklyn and L.A., has died

Carl Erskine, one of the last living Brooklyn Dodgers and a mainstay of a pitching rotation that carried the team to four World Series in the 1950s before the team headed to Los Angeles, has died in his hometown of Anderson, Ind. A thoughtful man who threw himself into charity work later in life, Erskine died early Tuesday morning after a brief illness. He was 97. Part of a nearly mythical group of ballplayers who were anointed “The Boys of Summer” by author Roger Kahn, Erskine played alongside Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, Roy Campanella and Jackie Robinson, who became his closest friend on the team. Later in life, Erskine credited Robinson for teaching him some of life’s most important lessons — tolerance, patience, care and understanding. Erskine said he was stunned at the racial taunts directed at Robinson after he became the first Black player in Major League Baseball. He said Robinson received death threats, was typically barred from staying with his white teammates in hotels while on the road and had teammates who …
