Sir Brian May has revealed he recently suffered a “minor stroke” which caused him to lose control over his left arm. The Queen guitarist, 77, shared the news in a video on social media, reassuring fans that he is once again able to play guitar. Sir Brian said he was rushed to hospital with “blue lights flashing, the lot”, after losing normal feeling in his arm about a week ago. The musician previously suffered a heart attack in 2020. The good news is that I can play guitar after the events of the last few days. “I say this because it was in some doubt, because that little health hiccup that I mentioned happened about a week ago – what they called it was a minor stroke. ‘Carefully Plotted Chaos’ | Brian Seibert

‘Carefully Plotted Chaos’ | Brian Seibert

Midway through The Plague, Albert Camus’s 1947 novel about a French Algerian city beset by a deadly pandemic, a journalist and a doctor discuss a record playing on a phonograph. It’s “St. James Infirmary,” a blues and jazz standard about a man visiting his dead lover at the morgue. The journalist admits that he’s been playing the record a lot. The repetition, he says, is like life during a plague: “the same thing over and over again.” The choreographer Twyla Tharp has cited The Plague as an inspiration for How Long Blues, which premiered in June at Little Island, the public park that has been floating on the Hudson River since 2021. (Like many people, she was drawn to the novel because of the Covid-19 pandemic.) Tharp has called the show her “fantasy of Camus and Sartre,” the French philosopher-novelists who turned from friends to rivals. The soundtrack, however, was not French but mostly American: a medley of largely blues and jazz classics rearranged by Tharp, the guitarist-producer T-Bone Burnett, and the composer David Mansfield …

Judge finds Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson needs conservatorship because of mental decline

Judge finds Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson needs conservatorship because of mental decline

A judge found Thursday (May 9) that Beach Boys founder and music luminary Brian Wilson should be in a court conservatorship to manage his personal and medical decisions because of what his doctor calls a “major neurocognitive disorder”. At a hearing, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T May approved the petition filed by the 81-year-old Wilson’s family and inner circle after the death in January of his wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, who handled most of his tasks and affairs. “I find from clear and convincing evidence that a conservatorship of the person is necessary,” May said at the brief hearing. The judge said that evidence shows that Wilson consents to the arrangement and lacks the capacity to make health care decisions. May appointed two longtime Wilson representatives, publicist Jean Sievers and manager LeeAnn Hard, as his conservators. There were no significant objections raised. Two of Wilson’s seven children, Carnie and Wendy Wilson from singing group Wilson Phillips, asked through their attorney that all the children be added to a group text chain about their …

Georgia governor Brian Kemp signs new election changes into law

Georgia governor Brian Kemp signs new election changes into law

ATLANTA — Gov. Brian Kemp signed legislation Tuesday that makes additional changes to Georgia’s election laws ahead of the 2024 presidential contest in the battleground state, including defining probable causes for removing voters from the rolls when their eligibility is challenged. Republican activists — fueled by debunked theories of a stolen election — have challenged more than 100,000 voters in the state in recent years. The activists say they are rooting out duplicate records and removing voters who have moved out of state. The bill Kemp signed into law — SB 189 — lists death, evidence of voting or registering in another jurisdiction, a tax exemption indicating a primary residence elsewhere, or a nonresidential address as probable causes for removing voters from the rolls. Most controversially, it says the National Change of Address list can be considered, though not exclusively. Supporters have said the probable cause definition would make the challenge process more difficult. Opponents have disputed that, saying the changes would enable more baseless attacks on voters that would overwhelm election administrators and disenfranchise legitimate voters. …

But as you read Cox’s comments, it seems that this was more than an intellectual opposition to Christianity, but almost an emotional hatred. Cox is best known for his role in the HBO TV series Succession, where he plays the patriarch of what has been described as a dysfunctional wealthy family. He won a Golden Global Award and received an Emmy nomination for his role. In the podcast, Cox took direct aim at the Bible, describing it as “one of the worst books ever,” and then focussed on the Genesis account, stating that anyone who believed it was “stupid.” “It’s Adam and Eve …. I mean, the propaganda goes [right] …

My brother, Officer Brian Sicknick, died after January 6. Politics continued to pull my family apart

My brother, Officer Brian Sicknick, died after January 6. Politics continued to pull my family apart

My brother, United States Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, collapsed after defending the Capitol Building and everyone in it from pro-Trump insurrectionists on January 6, 2021, and died in the hospital the following day. He suffered two strokes, we learned. In the aftermath of his death, I thought my family would be united in our grief. I didn’t see until later that politics — some of the same on display at the Capitol the day Brian reported for what would be his last shift — were already dividing us. After the Medical Examiner finally released his remains for burial, my family returned to Washington, D.C., to pay our final respects to my kid brother. Brian was one of the few American citizens to lay in honor at the United States Capitol Rotunda, the same building he gave his life to protect. After the public services, we met President Biden, who expressed heartfelt condolences for our loss. The President and his wife came without the press in tow, without photographers. Several other high-ranking officials also quietly …
