A Boy Called Fish – TheHumanist.com

Fish Stark was appointed the Executive Director of the American Humanist Association in September 2024. This article is excerpted from his Welcome remarks at the American Humanist Association’s 2024 Conference in September. LET’S GET THIS out of the way early: Fish is not my given name. My father, Fortney Hillman Stark Jr., rarely used his given name either. Most folks in the humanist and secular movements know him as Pete Stark—the first open atheist in Congress. That was how his family and friends knew him, too. He occasionally went by Fortney when he was younger, giving rise to a hilarious incident where a tongue-tied news anchor introduced him as “local banker, Fartney Stork.” But when I was born, it was decided that I would be named Fortney Hillman Stark III. For understandable reasons, I was not consulted at the time. I developed an opinion on the matter several years later, when it became clear that the name “Fortney” was a very challenging name to have as a boy in the first grade. And not just …

The BBC journalist, 78, known for his landmark 1984 Six O’Clock News bulletin about the famine in Ethiopia that triggered the release of the charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas”, and Bob Geldof’s 16-hour music marathon Live Aid, described Payne as a “drugged up, faded, boy band singer”. Payne’s death at the age of 31 dominated news headlines after the One Direction star fell from a third story hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 16 October. Multiple substances, including pink cocaine, were allegedly found in toxicology reports, though the Public Prosecutors Office say the analysis is not yet completed. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Buerk claimed Payne’s death should not have been of such interest to any of …

High Court refuses application to ritually circumcise baby boy

High Court refuses application to ritually circumcise baby boy

The High Court has rejected an application by parents to have their 16 month old son (G), who is in care, ritually circumcised. G’s father is of Lebanese Muslim heritage and argued that ritual circumcision was an important aspect of the boy’s identity. The application was also supported by G’s mother. But it was opposed by both the Local Authority (LA) and G’s Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service appointed guardian. The LA, the London Borough of Hackney, argued there are “no clear or cogent arguments that this irreversible procedure would be in G’s best interests”. Instead, the decision should be “deferred until G is older and can make the decision himself”. The guardian was “strongly of the view” that G should not be ritually circumcised. The judge, Nageena Khalique KC, explained the Children Act 1989 requires the welfare of the child to be “the paramount consideration” in reaching a decision on ritual circumcision. The procedure is “likely to be painful and carries with it small but definable physical risks and long term …
