Perhaps every generation believes that it is unsuited to its own era. As an elder Millennial, I can’t help but see how perfectly primed my cohort was for feelings of inadequacy and distress. Raised on the standard American diet of promise and progress, many in my micro-generation arrived in high school just in time for the Columbine shootings to undermine our sense of safety. As many of us entered the age of military fitness, the Twin Towers fell and the United States embarked on a forever war. The Great Recession greeted our arrival into the job market, and coronavirus-pandemic lockdowns coincided with the years when a lot of us were becoming parents. Now our early middle age is marked by inflation, environmental chaos, and AI’s potentially existential threat to job stability. Even if most generations complain about discontent, mine may have a particularly strong case for it. What’s a fiction writer to do with all of that joylessness? At one time Linux felt more like a hobby than an OS, which made me burn through eight distros in two years. However, I wouldn’t take all the blame. Several distros I tried were so entertaining that I couldn’t help but focus on what could be next. Landing on Debian was so uneventful that the urge to keep chasing what’s flashy and exciting died. Debian remains functional and identical from month to month, with no temptations to install new software or tweaks. It turned my focus from the OS back to the actual work I had to do. I never knew that embracing an intentionally boring distro could be such a productivity cheat code. Congratulations. After four years of hard work, you—or your son or daughter, or grandson or granddaughter, or neighbor or niece, or other sort of ramen eater—are graduating from college. It wasn’t easy. It was probably also very expensive. You may have thought, I’m not sure I will make it. I thought that too. And I remembered that feeling when I dropped in, last night, for late-night custard at Famous Local Diner With Not-So-Secret Custard. But I did make it, and so did you. And here we are together, having made it. The sun is shining, and the rest of your lives are ahead of you. That’s the structure and message of a commencement speech. An accomplished and maybe-famous person is probably giving a similar address right now to a sea of graduation caps spread across a green lawn and under blue skies. All of those hardworking graduates will probably forget the content of the address by tomorrow, if not earlier–and that’s fine. It’s a diss worthy of Miranda Priestly. Meryl Streep says that the popularity of the superhero genre has resulted in films having duller characters — with more clear-cut heroes and villains rather than true shades-of-gray personalties (such as the one she plays in The Devil Wears Prada 2, which opens this weekend). The Oscar winner was interviewed along with her Prada co-stars Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt on Hits Radio Breakfast Show when interviewer Fleur East asked about seeing Priestly’s softer side in the new film. “I feel like you get a realistic view,” Streep replied. “I think we tend to Marvel-ize the movies now. I remember the first time I ever heard the word homosexual. I was in the first grade, and my mother and I were sitting in the living room watching “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” as we did each day when I’d come home from school. In response to a comment one of her guests had made about their marriage, Rosie made an impromptu joke about not wanting a husband.The audience laughed uproariously in that way that grown-ups always did when they had an inside-joke amongst themselves that they thought kids wouldn’t understand.
