Russia in flames in humiliating blow to Putin as ‘Ukrainian drones set oil depot on fire’ | World | News

More than 10 Ukrainian drones penetrated three Russian districts in the Voronezh region on Wednesday night, a Russian official has claimed. An oil depot in the Liski District was left in flames as attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure continued. Voronezh Region Governor Roman Gusev said the drones that attacked the oil depot managed to penetrate the protective netting on the tanks. In remarks attributed to him by independent Russian news outlet Astra, he said: “At the initial stage, extinguishing the fire was complicated by the threat of repeated attacks on the facility. “At the moment, reinforced fire crews are fighting the fire at several reservoirs: dozens of units of equipment and two fire trains. Additional forces have been sent from two neighbouring regions.” The official claimed there were no casualties and citizens’ property was not damaged. According to the head of the region, there is no threat to the population, and the situation with the availability of fuel and lubricants in the region will not change, he stressed. The major decision comes just months after the network announced it was eliminating the house band from Late Night with Seth Meyers due to budget cuts. For the past few seasons, Fallon has consistently taped new Friday night episodes despite his competitors, including ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, CBS’s The Late Night Show with Stephen Colbert and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, only taping four each week. Late Night with Seth Meyers has also only been airing four original episodes weekly. As late-night viewership has declined in recent years, networks have been forced to take these money-saving measures. “Sadly, it’s the reality of broadcast and a shrinking market – streaming eating into this, and YouTube eating into …

Will Trillion In Treasury Basis Trades Blow Up The Clearinghouses

Will $1 Trillion In Treasury Basis Trades Blow Up The Clearinghouses

By Russell Clark of Capital Flows and Asset Markets Reading the excellent article by Brian Meehan of Bloomberg Intelligence, “Basis Trade Growth Is Massive”, I was reminded just how stupid clearinghouses really are. If you ever meet a head of a clearinghouse, I can assure it was not brains that got them to this key position in global finance. As the article points out, there is now a $1.1 trillion notional short position in US treasury futures. You should not read this as the market being bearish on treasuries. It is a levered trade to make a “risk free” return on the difference in price between off the run treasuries and treasury future positions. For every short position in the treasury futures, there should be a long position in the physical market. The size of the trade has been large for awhile. The Federal Reserve took a look at it and thought it was not a problem (uh oh!). It has the same data as above, just that Bloomberg has provided an up to date …

Sunak suffers poll blow as levelling-up cash-for-votes row erupts | Conservatives

The Tory general election campaign hit more trouble on Saturday as Rishi Sunak faced accusations of using levelling up funds to win votes and Labour opened its biggest poll lead since the disastrous premiership of Liz Truss. As Sunak tried to fire up his party’s campaign before the first crucial TV debate with Keir Starmer on Tuesday, it emerged that more than half of the 30 towns each promised £20m of regeneration funding on Saturday were in constituencies won by Tory MPs at the last election. Some 17 of the £20m pots went to towns in areas won by the Conservatives in 2019, although two of those were no longer held by Conservative MPs when the general election was called. Just eight awards were made to towns in Labour seats, although many of the party’s strongholds tend to be in more deprived areas in need of levelling up money. The funding pledge led to accusations from Sunak’s opponents of “pork barrel” politics, while those involved in regeneration of the north said the announcement was more …

“Fani Willis messed up badly”: Appeals court deals another blow to Trump’s Georgia election case

“Fani Willis messed up badly”: Appeals court deals another blow to Trump’s Georgia election case

The Georgia Court of Appeals has further delayed Donald Trump’s election interference case in the state, revisiting the question of whether Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis should be removed for alleged misconduct. In a Wednesday filing, the court granted an interlocutory appeal to the former president’s legal team, allowing them to argue once again that Willis should be removed from the case. Trump’s legal team has 10 days to file a notice to appeal. The case, concerning Trump’s effort to get Georgia officials to change the results of the state’s 2020 election, has faced a tumultuous path since the DA’s office launched an investigation more than three years ago. Willis has faced significant scrutiny for her relationship with prosecutor Nathan Wade, which Trump lawyers argued created a conflict of interest. Earlier this year, experts also warned that her continued comments on the case, even after a judge ruled she shouldn’t be tossed, posed a threat to the continued prosecution of the case. For example, Willis’ remarks on cable news — that “the train is coming” –— …

Tory MP Natalie Elphicke Defects To Labour Party In Another Blow For Rishi Sunak

Tory MP Natalie Elphicke Defects To Labour Party In Another Blow For Rishi Sunak

MP Natalie Elphicke has defected from the Tories to Labour, in another humiliating blow for Rishi Sunak following his hammering at the local elections. It came just minutes before the prime minister faced Keir Starmer at PMQs on Wednesday. The now Labour MP for Dover accused Sunak of “failing to keep our borders safe” and of “incompetence and division”. It is a particularly stinging attack on Sunak, given he has made stopping small boat crossings from France to Kent central to his election campaign. In a statement on Wednesday, Elphicke said: “Rishi Sunak’s government is failing to keep our borders safe and secure. “Lives are being lost in the English Channel while small boat arrivals are once again at record levels. “It’s clear they have failed to keep our borders secure and cannot be trusted.” HuffPost UK revealed on Sunday that two Tory MPs were in talks about defecting before the general election. Elphicke, who was elected 2019, also accused Sunak having “ousted” Boris Johnson as prime minister in a “coup”. “Under Rishi Sunak, the …

Conservative Andy Street suffers shock loss to Labour in West Midlands mayoral race in blow to Rishi Sunak | Politics News

Tory incumbent Andy Street has suffered a shock defeat to Labour in the West Midlands mayoral election after a partial recount was ordered. Labour’s Richard Parker beat Mr Street by just 1,508 votes – 0.25% – to deliver a major blow to Rishi Sunak in the key electoral battleground after a hammering in the local elections. With the race neck-and-neck, in the end it came down to the results in one borough – Labour-supporting Sandwell. “This is the most important thing I will ever do,” Mr Parker said in his acceptance speech. “I promise you that I will deliver jobs,” he added. He told Sky News he would take buses “back into public control” and deliver the “largest programme of social housing we’ve had in this region for more than 40 years”. And he thanked his predecessor, who he said had “led this region through a number of great challenges and you deserve great credit for that”. Mr Street told Sky News he was “personally devastated”, had “put my all into this”, and “genuinely believed …

Intesa targets new digital-only clients after antritrust blow

Intesa targets new digital-only clients after antritrust blow

MILAN: Italy’s biggest bank Intesa Sanpaolo on Friday (May 3) said it had acquired some 90,000 new customers through its digital-only arm Isybank, after an antitrust decision effectively halted the migration of existing clients. Italy’s competition authority dealt a blow to Intesa’s fintech ambitions in November when it ruled the bank had to obtain explicit consent from the around 4 million clients it planned to move to Isybank based on their digital habits. Intesa had informed customers digitally of an opt-out deadline. Intesa has moved more than 350,000 existing customers, it said, against an original March target of 2.3 million. With its client migration timetable in tatters, Intesa is sticking to a goal of adding one million new clients through Isybank by the end of next year. Chief Technology Officer Massimo Proverbio said the delays had only affected the commercial strategy related to existing customers, while the digital transition to a cloud-based IT infrastructure progressed. “Things have gone very well: The infrastructure has proven reliable, we’ve successfully tested it with as many as 20 million …
