When You Block the Internet on Your Phone, Something Astonishing Happens Mentally

Image by Getty / Futurism Let’s face it: we’re all hopelessly addicted to our smartphones. Such is the power of having the internet at your fingertips at literally every single moment of the day. Is this bad for our brains? Probably; there’s a reason terms like “doomscrolling” exist. But demonstrating a connection between heavy smartphone use and cognitive woes has been difficult. There’s a clear correlation, but causation requires another level of rigor. Determined to find answers, a team of researchers conducted an experiment that forced participants to completely block all internet access on their smartphones for two whole weeks. Phone calls and old-school texting were still permitted, and if they wanted to, the subjects could still go online using a computer. What the team found, as detailed in a study published in the journal PNAS Nexus, was that even though the intervention was relatively short, it finished with significant improvements — and we really mean significant — to the participants’ mental health, attention span, and subjective well-being. “Smartphones have drastically changed our lives and behaviors …

This charging block was featured at CES because it’s that awesome

What charging block are you currently using to power your phone and laptop? Most likely, it’s the one that came with it or something random that you pulled out of your drawer. And here’s a secret: it might be why your devices are charging so slowly. Have you ever heard of GaN chargers? No worries if you haven’t—they’re pretty new to us, too. The term Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology refers to a new era of more compact and powerful chargers. This 100W Omega GaN charger was named a CES Innovation Awards Honoree in 2021, and now you can save 49 percent. Here’s why it’s so cool It might be hard to understand why we’re getting excited over a charging block, but we have a few good reasons: It has two 100W USB-C ports and a USB-A port supporting 22.5W When you’re charging three devices simultaneously, it doesn’t get hot Your purchase includes EU, UK, and AU travel adapters You probably hear a lot about different charging speeds but don’t realize just how convenient 100W fast …

Misconduct alleged in report ex-UCLA professors tried to block. They got no discipline

Misconduct alleged in report ex-UCLA professors tried to block. They got no discipline

Revelations that three UCLA orthodontics professors solicited unauthorized fees from international students sent shock waves through the university’s highly regarded dentistry school in 2020. An independent investigation commissioned by UCLA — including scores of interviews, reviews of over 300,000 emails, and 79,000 other documents and financial records — concluded that the influential faculty members had engaged in serious misconduct, leading them to leave their prestigious positions. But until recently, the full report has been suppressed, and it paints a far more troubling picture of alleged improper governmental activities, including allegations of fraud, extortion, violations of conflict of interest laws and misappropriation of public money. The three professors waged a legal battle against The Times for more than two years to muzzle the report by the Hueston Hennigan law firm. However, in June, an appeals court ruled that the Hueston investigation was extensive and that UCLA must release the report, with redactions, emphasizing its public interest and reliability. In its opinion, the appeals court upheld a trial judge’s prior order to release the report, after The …

Ed Sheeran’s love-hate relationship with London after £8.25m office block purchase

Ed Sheeran has had a whirlwind week, with an appearance on Sky Sports, addressing questions about his non-involvement in Band Aid, and making waves in the property market. The singer, 33, has reportedly expanded his property portfolio by purchasing a luxury office block in London’s bustling Soho for £8.25 million. This prime piece of real estate is set to bolster his growing investment business. The Sun reported that the star acquired the exquisitely refurbished building. It features open-plan office space for up to 50 desks, a fitted kitchenette, a breakfast bar, bespoke glass phone booths, and Crittall-style meeting rooms. The Suffolk singer said he would have “respectfully” declined to appear in the new version of the charity song, and referenced another post criticising foreign aid in Africa. The singer rushed to greet pundit Jamie Redknapp and quipped: “I don’t think [Amorim] wants to speak to me” before heading out of the shot. Sheeran has since apologised, writing on Instagram: “Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday, didn’t actually realise he was being interviewed at the time, …

The proposed GCSE is one of a number of curriculum commitments currently up in the air post-election The proposed GCSE is one of a number of curriculum commitments currently up in the air post-election More from this theme Recent articles A landmark new GCSE in natural history is unlikely to be introduced by its original target of next September. The proposals were announced to great fanfare by former education secretary Nadhim Zahawi in 2022, forming part of the government’s sustainability and climate strategy. He said it would offer young people “a chance to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding” of the Earth, its environment and “how we can come together to conserve it”. The aim was to introduce it by 2025, pending approval from exams regulator Ofqual. But Schools Week understands the sign-off process was stalled earlier this year. X is developing a tool to block links in replies to cut down on spam

X is developing a new tool that’ll allow users to block links in replies, which could help cut down on spam. SEE ALSO: X is flirting with dislike and downvote features (again) Engadget noted that the new tool first surfaced online via a post from independent app researcher Nima Owji, who has discovered such unreleased features in the past. Owji, simply enough, posted, “X is working on the ability to let you disable links in the replies of your posts!” Owji included a screenshot of what the potentially forthcoming tool looks like. Mashable Light Speed Tweet may have been deleted The feature looks simple enough. It’ll just be a box to check to disable links in the replies. That could be helpful to stop the accounts that flood popular posts with spammy links, often to questionable products. Others post links intentionally trying to mislead you. So blocking replies with links could certainly prove helpful. Christopher Stanley, senior director for security engineering at X, posted a reply about the feature, confirming that it was real and that …

Met police ‘using human rights laws to block trooping the colour protest’ | Monarchy

The anti-monarchy campaign group Republic has accused the Metropolitan police of seeking to use human rights legislation to block protests at this weekend’s trooping the colour. In a move it described as “Kafkaesque”, Republic claimed the force has written to it citing the European convention on human rights (ECHR), saying it was using ”the very law designed to protect the right to protest as justification for closing down protest”. Last year, anti-monarchy protesters were arrested before they had a chance to protest at the coronation, on 6 May, which led to criticism of the Met. King Charles will make a high-profile appearance on Saturday to mark the monarch’s official birthday during trooping the colour, which takes place at Horse Guards Parade near Buckingham Palace in central London. Republic, which campaigns for the abolition of the monarchy and its replacement with a directly elected head of state, said 10 days ago it was told by the police that they were “relaxed” and had “no issue with where you want to protest”. While Republic said no final …

TikTok sues US government as it tries to block law that could ban app | Science & Tech News

TikTok is suing the US government over a law that seeks to force the app’s Chinese owner ByteDance to sell it within nine months or ban its use in America. The popular video-sharing platform is trying to block the recently passed bill, arguing it violates the US constitution, including the first amendment which protects free speech. The bill, officially known as the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, was signed by President Joe Biden on 24 April and gives TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance until 19 January next year to sell the app to another company or face a ban. The measure was passed overwhelmingly in Congress last month amid worries among US politicians that China could access data on American people or spy on them with the app. TikTok denies it has or ever would share US user data, accusing American politicians of pushing “speculative” concerns. More than one billion people use TikTok worldwide, including 170 million in the US, which is the country with the platform’s biggest audience. The lawsuit, which …

TikTok, ByteDance sue to block US law seeking sale or ban of app

In August 2022, according to the lawsuit, CFIUS stopped engaging in meaningful discussions about the agreement and in March 2023 CFIUS “insisted that ByteDance would be required to divest the US TikTok business”. CFIUS is an interagency committee, chaired by the US Treasury Department, that reviews foreign investments in American businesses and real estate that implicate national security concerns. Biden could extend the Jan 19 deadline by three months if he determines ByteDance is making progress. In 2020, then-President Donald Trump was blocked by the courts in his bid to ban TikTok and Chinese-owned WeChat, a unit of Tencent, in the United States. Trump, the Republican candidate challenging Democratic President Joe Biden in the Nov 5 US election, has since reversed course, saying he does not support a ban but that security concerns need to be addressed. Discover how companies are responsibly integrating AI in production. This invite-only event in SF will explore the intersection of technology and business. Find out how you can attend here. OpenAI has made a flurry of new updates today alone, but the biggest may be a new tool it is developing called “Media Manager,” due out next year in 2025, which will allow creators to choose which of their works — if any — they will allow to be scraped and trained on for the company’s AI models. Announced in a blog post on the OpenAI website, the tool is described as follows: “OpenAI is developing Media Manager, a tool that will enable creators and content owners to tell us what they own and specify how they want their works to be included or excluded from machine learning research and training. Over time, we plan to introduce additional choices and features. This will require cutting-edge machine learning research to build a first-ever tool of its kind to help us identify copyrighted text, images, audio, and video …
