Biden Is Still the Democrats’ Best Bet for November

Biden Is Still the Democrats’ Best Bet for November

Let’s start with the obvious. The concerns about Joe Biden are valid: He’s old. He talks slowly. He occasionally bumbles the basics in public appearances. Biden’s age is so concerning that many Biden supporters now believe he should step aside and let some other candidate become the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee. The New York Times journalist Ezra Klein made the best-available case for this view recently in a 4,000-word piece that garnered intense attention by arguing that Biden is no longer up to the task of campaign life. “He is not the campaigner he was, even five years ago,” Klein writes. “The way he moves, the energy in his voice. The Democrats denying decline are only fooling themselves.” In one sense Klein is correct. As the political strategist Mike Murphy said many moons ago, Biden’s age is like a gigantic pair of antlers he wears on his head, all day every day. Even when he does something exceptional—like visit a war zone in Ukraine, or whip inflation—the people applauding him are thinking, Can’t. Stop. Staring. …

Delta’s solar eclipse flight sold out, but your best bet to see it is still down here

Delta’s solar eclipse flight sold out, but your best bet to see it is still down here

Earlier this week, Delta Air Lines announced an extra flight for its April 8 schedule, timed specifically to provide passengers an aerial view of the total solar eclipse. But if you were still hoping to snag a ticket for the afternoon jaunt alongside the path of totality, you’re already out of luck—seats aboard the Airbus A220-300 sold out within 24 hours. According to Delta’s original announcement, DL Flight 1218 with service from Austin to Detroit will depart at 12:15 PM CST for its roughly 1,380-mile, 3-hour-long trip. Once at a cruising altitude of 30,000-feet, passengers will be able to view the celestial event through the plane’s “extra-large windows,” which the official Airbus specs manual says measure in at 11×16 inches. For comparison, a Boeing 777 includes 10×15 inch glimpses of the outside world. Everyone on the plane will receive special glasses to safely watch the eclipse (which is nice to hear, given how few free amenities remain on most commercial flights). [Related: We can predict solar eclipses to the second. Here’s how.] While the solar …

Antler’s founder on its vertical AI bet in Southeast Asia

Antler’s founder on its vertical AI bet in Southeast Asia

A growing roster of vertical AI startups is emerging in Southeast Asia to serve sectors ranging from seafood to finance. Singapore-based venture capital firm Antler recently made a bet on 37 of them, investing $5.1 million in total for pre-seed deals. This included a strategic partnership with Khazanah, Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, which invested into seven startups. “If you look at the rest of the world, there’s lots of horizontal AI and it’s becoming insanely competitive,” Antler co-founder and managing partner Jussi Salovaara tells TechCrunch. “What founders are increasingly looking to solve in this part of the world are practical problems in different industries.” He adds that even though Southeast Asia doesn’t have the talent pool to build something like OpenAI yet, they can take a customer-first approach to AI apps, solving pain points unique to different sectors and markets. Within verticalized AI, different trends are emerging in each country. For example, Vietnam has a large pool of technical talent. Founders there who are working on a consumer startup usually focus more on the domestic …

How to the pick the winner and the best ante-post bet

How to the pick the winner and the best ante-post bet

The 2024 Grand National is fast approaching and for many that means it is time to start the process of finding the winner.  The winning horse will still have to stay but it can be no coincidence that two novice chasers, therefore potentially unexposed to the handicapper, have won recently. Rule The World (2016) had never won a chase while Noble Yeats (2022) had been campaigned, for the most part, over distances we now know were way too short for him. Last year’s winner Corach Rambler entered the race incredibly well handicapped at 10st 5lbs. After the weights for the race were revealed last February, the horse went on to cruise to victory in the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival, meaning his rating had jumped by another 10lb by the time the tapes went up at Aintree. In truth, picking a Grand National winner does require as much good fortune as it does good research but even with that in mind, Telegraph Sport will do its utmost to find you a winner in April.  When …

The Feds Just Bet Even Bigger on American-Made Heat Pumps

The Feds Just Bet Even Bigger on American-Made Heat Pumps

While everyone’s been focused on accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles to cut carbon emissions, a technological hero has been rapidly ascending under the radar: the heat pump. Instead of burning natural gas or coal to produce heat, this fully electric device extracts warmth from outdoor air—even when it’s freezing outside—and pumps it inside to warm a structure. After years of stealthy, steady growth, heat pumps are now outselling gas furnaces in the United States, whereas EVs accounted for just 8 percent of all US new vehicle sales in the first half of 2023. In November, the Biden administration announced it would be infusing the domestic heat pump industry with $169 million in federal funding, increasing capacity to manufacture the actual devices and their various components, like compressors. The feds figured that would end up creating 1,700 jobs across 13 states. Seeing still more momentum for heat pump adoption since then, the Department of Energy is today announcing an additional $63 million for the same purpose. This time around, the money also emphasizes heat pumps …

Netflix, Tyler Perry Set Television Deal

Netflix, Tyler Perry Set Television Deal

Netflix is doubling down on its commitment to the ever-busy Tyler Perry. The streaming service announced Monday that it was adding a multi-year, first-look series deal to its ongoing partnership with Perry. The first series under the new pact is titled Beauty in Black, a 16-episode hour-long drama, written, directed and produced by the man himself. Per Netflix, the project follows two women who lead very different lives — one struggling to make a living after being kicked out by her mother, the other running a successful business — and find themselves entangled in each other’s worlds. The news comes some four months after Perry revealed his first-look film deal with the service, which has him writing, directing and producing features including the upcoming World War II period film Six Triple Eight, starring Kerry Washington, and legal drama Mea Culpa, fronted by Kelly Rowland. Past efforts from the prolific filmmaker include A Jazzman’s Blues, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, as well as A Madea Homecoming, the 12th installment in his long-running Madea franchise. (Perry also …

Super Bowl fans are flooding Vegas with cash. Don’t bet on a big windfall for workers.

Super Bowl fans are flooding Vegas with cash. Don’t bet on a big windfall for workers.

Big spenders are set to boost Las Vegas service workers’ earnings during Super Bowl weekend, but maybe not by much. Sin City expects to host more than 330,000 visitors as the San Francisco 49ers face off against the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL’s title game on Sunday. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority expects the matchup to generate $600 million in economic impact for the city, though the U.S. Chamber of Commerce says the broader payoff can take time to be fully realized, estimating Arizona’s statewide haul at $1.3 billion after Phoenix hosted last year. Much of that will come from attendance at Allegiant Stadium itself, where the least expensive seat was going for $5,700 on StubHub by Friday morning and the priciest neared $19,000. After fans splurged for a place in the stands, some stadium workers fear even the most well-heeled among them may not have much to spare for their tip jars — especially at a time of widespread “tipflation” fatigue. “Honestly, because of the price of the seats, I’m hoping …

The Super Bowl is expected to smash betting records. Nearly 68M US adults plan to wager

Here’s how to bet legally on the Super Bowl

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — More people in the U.S. than ever before are expected to bet on this year’s Super Bowl, including novice bettors attracted to the game due to the possible attendance of pop star Taylor Swift, whose boyfriend Travis Kelce will be among the players. With sports betting ads blitzing the airwaves with come-ons and promotions, things might be a bit confusing, especially for first-time bettors or those who don’t fully understand how things work. Here is a guide to betting on Sunday’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. We will deal here only with legal options from sportsbooks approved and regulated by government authorities in the U.S. This includes making bets in person at a casino or racetrack (call before you go; not every casino or track offers sports betting), or setting up an account from a computer or smartphone with online bookmakers. And please keep in mind that this is supposed to be a fun form of entertainment, so only bet what you can afford …

Why a B2B startup is placing a bet on a M Super Bowl ad

Why a B2B startup is placing a bet on a $7M Super Bowl ad

Some people watch the Super Bowl for the actual football game being played. Many watch the event for the halftime show or as an excuse to eat wings and other game day snacks. Some watch it to look for better software solutions for their company — maybe? Papaya Global hopes so. The late-stage global workforce payment startup is running a 30-second ad on Sunday. The ad is meant to highlight the company’s software, which helps other companies stay compliant running payroll for cross-border teams. The commercial takes place inside of an office and is a relatively lackluster Super Bowl ad when compared to Super Bowl stalwarts like Budweiser and McDonald’s, which each year use humor, celebrities and high production value to grab attention. It’s not surprising, though, that Papaya’s ad isn’t super flashy, considering Papaya is a B2B software company. While it’s not uncommon for B2B startups to advertise through traditional consumer strategies, running an ad at the Super Bowl is very different from buying up ads on a NYC Subway or a San Francisco highway …

If Taylor Swift wants revenge against her haters, here’s a good bet

If Taylor Swift wants revenge against her haters, here’s a good bet

The right wing’s unhealthy obsession with Taylor Swift has hit critical mass in the run-up to this weekend’s Super Bowl match-up between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. We’ll set aside the strategic virtue of alienating a public figure who can single-handedly break the internet and focus instead on how Swift should seek revenge. And oh, by the way, if you don’t think she understands a thing or two about revenge, just take a listen to “Reputation” or ask Scooter Braun or David Mueller. Taylor commands a social media army: 280 million followers on Instagram, 95.1 million on X, 23.9 million on TikTok, 80 million on Facebook and 56.3 million on YouTube. By comparison, Donald Trump has 23.7 million followers on the ‘gram, 87.4 million on X, 24.5 million on Facebook, and 2.8 million on YouTube. The numbers speak for themselves. And there’s more. A survey conducted last year by the Morning Consult found that avid Swift fans skew suburban, Democratic and, not surprisingly, female. They’re mostly 18 to 39 years old. …
