EJAE Honored at Gyopo’s Chuseok Benefit

Singer-songwriter EJAE was honored at Gyopo’s annual Chuseok Benefit. The KPop Demon Hunters star is fresh off a whirlwind start to the year after the animated film dominated the awards circuit. EJAE earned herself Golden Globe, Grammy Award and an Oscar along the way. The singer was honored at Gyopo’s 8th annual Chuseok Benefit, which is sponsored by CJ ENM, late last month. “I’m so honored to be recognized by GYOPO at this year’s Chuseok Benefit. It means so much to be surrounded by a community that celebrates the Korean diaspora and the many different ways we stay connected to our culture, because that connection is at the core of what I do,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s been such a special afternoon,” she said. “I’m so proud to celebrate where we come from and what we’re creating together.” The benefit, held Gyopo board member Ann Soh Woods’ private residence, brought together figures from art, design, entertainment and fashion, including Anicka Yi, Carol Lim,, Dumbfoundead, Jon Moon and fellow Demon Hunters stars Audrey Nuna …

A Novel Benefit of the Psychedelic Ibogaine

A Novel Benefit of the Psychedelic Ibogaine

Ibogaine is the primary alkaloid in Tabernanthe iboga root bark. It’s a perennial plant native to the tropical rainforests of West Central Africa. It has been used in traditional African medicine for centuries. It induces profound mental, emotional, and spiritual experiences. In the West, it has been more recently recognized for its well-established anti-addictive properties. Numerous studies link ibogaine administration with reductions in drug cravings, in symptoms of withdrawal, and in return to opioid use (Barsuglia et al., 2018; Mash, 2023). The benefits it offers to reduce opioid addiction are likely related to the complex actions of ibogaine at the brain’s opioid receptors. Ibogaine has truly revolutionized the treatment of opioid addiction. Multiple open-label trials of hundreds of patients have discovered that a single dose administration of ibogaine reduced the use of prescription opioids and heroin. A single administration of ibogaine reduced opioid craving, insomnia, and depressed mood for several weeks after treatment. Ibogaine also reduced the major symptoms of opioid withdrawal. What Other Conditions Might Ibogaine Treat? Some recent studies suggest that ibogaine might …

The unexpected health benefit of a baby’s first encounter with mom’s poo

The unexpected health benefit of a baby’s first encounter with mom’s poo

It may sound surprising – even a little shocking – but the very first thing many babies encounter when they’re born is their mother’s poo. If they’re born vaginally, head down, with the face against their mother’s rectum, the pressure can expel faecal material just as they are born. In other words, they can be born with their mother’s poo on their face. As confronting as that image may be, this early exposure is not only normal but likely beneficial. Microbes from their mother acquired during birth, and especially from the mother’s poo, help shape a baby’s developing gut and immune system, setting the stage for lifelong health. But that doesn’t mean you can smear poo on your newborn baby’s face to boost their exposure to microbes. That’s dangerous and definitely not advised. Why Does Marriage Seem to Benefit Men More Than Women?

Why Does Marriage Seem to Benefit Men More Than Women?

This week, my partner scheduled two medical appointments in the same week. While I’m sure this felt a bit overwhelming for him, I couldn’t help feeling relieved that my months of reminders finally worked. “Thanks for reminding me,” he said as he headed out the door for an appointment I had been encouraging him to make for quite some time. Half-jokingly, I found myself thinking: What would he do without me? My question was asked in humor. But it also points to something I notice often in relationships—not just wives reminding husbands to schedule dentist appointments or medical visits, but a broader pattern in which one partner becomes the organizer, planner, and emotional manager of the relationship’s day-to-day functioning. This dynamic raises a larger question researchers have been exploring for decades: why do men often appear to benefit more from marriage than women? Gender socialization plays a part For decades, researchers have noticed a consistent pattern: Marriage appears to provide greater health and psychological benefits for men than it does for women. At first glance, …

Marc Andreessen Sputters Incomprehensibly at Question About How AI Will Actually Benefit Humankind

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech There’s plenty of hype to go around about AI. It’s going to revolutionize this and automate that. But how, exactly? It’s a question that’s become increasingly pressing as governments and investors bet increasingly massive gobs of cash on its power to change the world. Unfortunately, even AI’s move devoted acolytes are struggling to articulate how AI is actually going to help humanity. Case in point, on a recent podcast appearance with Joe Rogan flagged by the Verge, the billionaire AI evangelist Marc Andreessen — who’s invested billions into AI development through his venture capital firm — struggled when asked to articulate AI’s benefits. The conversation began, ironically enough, with Andreessen asserting that tech executives have done a terrible job explaining what makes AI so important. “So, you’re saying that the people running AI have done a terrible job of selling AI,” Rogan said. “So sell it.” “Yes — oh, sell it, I mean, look, so it, it is, …

The Long-Term Benefit of Gentrifying Cities

The Long-Term Benefit of Gentrifying Cities

One popular strain of urban-policy thinking opposes gentrification—the arrival of affluent people into poor neighborhoods—and argues that poverty should be rectified by ever greater expenditure on public housing. The opposite might be true: Government spending can help, but it can also hurt, as badly designed public-housing projects have done. So long as gentrification brings rich and poor together, and offers the latter greater opportunity to take part in a healthy economy, it looks less like a villainous process and more like a heroic one. Few places illustrate the aspirations and failures of American housing policy as well as the Techwood Homes in downtown Atlanta—one of the first federal housing projects. Its completion, in 1935, even drew the attendance of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who switched on its electricity. To make way for the development, the old slums—in which roughly a quarter of residents were Black—had been cleared away. But the 604 new units were for white tenants only until 1968, when civil-rights laws forced integration. Like the ramshackle shacks it replaced, Techwood fell into disrepair. By …
