UK bans meat, dairy imports from Hungary, Slovakia after foot-and-mouth case – POLITICO

The U.K. farming industry was devastated by an outbreak of the disease in 2001, with more than 2,000 farms affected and more than 6 million animals slaughtered. The reports from Hungary follow claims last month that banned German products were being “auto-cleared” to enter the U.K. six days after the ban was put in place, with experts blaming the incident on a failure to update the government’s import notification system, known as IPAFFs. Giving evidence to the environment, food and rural affairs committee earlier this week, NPA CEO Lizzie Wilson claimed illegal German products were still bypassing the border. Currently, she explained, there is “no mechanism to identify those lorries that have self-declared themselves as low-risk and therefore auto-cleared so they don’t have to be inspected.” A spokesperson from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has denied the claims. “Restrictions were immediately brought in on animal products from Germany to prevent an outbreak,” they said. “These goods are not permitted to enter the country, any consignment carrying them will not progress through our …

Kallas gave top EU official the ax and governments aren’t happy – POLITICO

Kallas gave top EU official the ax and governments aren’t happy – POLITICO

Juhansone, a former Latvian ambassador, who is currently the top EU official at the Commission, is a close ally of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and her chief of staff Bjoern Seibert.  Should Juhansone clinch the top job at the EEAS it could be seen as a power grab by von der Leyen, who has a highly centralized, top-down management style as Commission boss. But it would also mean that with Kallas, a second person from a Baltic country would play a key role in foreign policy, a prospect that doesn’t sit well with some governments. Tense relations Kallas’ position, officially called EU high representative, is notoriously tricky. Although one of the bloc’s 27 commissioners, the EU foreign policy chief sits institutionally somewhere between the Commission and the Council ― which represents the member countries ― and is responsible for the 2,500-plus staff working in EEAS headquarters as well as around 2,800 employees working at delegations across the world.  The decision by Kallas, the former Estonian prime minister, has ruffled feathers just a week …

Brownies, Frownies and Beef Bourguignon + John Schmidt and Jonathan Woodward

Brownies, Frownies and Beef Bourguignon + John Schmidt and Jonathan Woodward

The one where Jonathan cooks for us. Picture this: a knock on the apartment door, in sweeps Jonathan Woodward, straight off a flight from Maine, grocery bags in hand. A few hours later, the apartment is heavy with the rich smells of simmering onions, sizzling beef and a stewing redwine sauce. A few more hours later, a few more knocks on the door and a party of four are seated at a table laden with food, wine and …. mics. It’s our Thanksgiving special and we invite you to come, enjoy a meal with Katelyn, Roxy and special guests John Schmidt (Roxy’s boo) and Jonathan (SBTC beloved producer). We laugh, we cry, we make fart jokes — and we are definitely filled with gratitude (and beef bourguignon, however you say that). GUESTS: The Rev. John Schmidt is the associate rector at The Church of the Epiphany in New York City. He has a Masters of Divinity from Duke Divinity School and is an avid oil painter. Oh yeah, and he’s married to Roxy. Jonathan Woodward is …

A history of the Smiths’ beef: Morrissey and Johnny Marr’s political divide

A history of the Smiths’ beef: Morrissey and Johnny Marr’s political divide

If you were looking for a Smiths reunion after Liam and Noel Gallagher from Oasis unexpectedly tabled their decades-long beef — you’re out of luck. The British rock band made of up Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce has been broken up for nearly four decades, and frontmen Morrissey and Marr have publicly stated their resistance to a reunion, due to their frayed relationship. After the band’s breakup in 1987, Morrissey and Marr have ventured into solo careers and have hardly spoken to each other. In May 2023, Rourke died from pancreatic cancer.  Despite loss of the band’s bassist and the animosity between Morrissey and Marr, fans are still clamoring for the Smiths will ever get back together.  Here’s a look at the bandmates’ rocky history to see just how far-fetched it is to wish for any sort of reconciliation, much less a reunion. The initial breakup The Smiths changed the landscape of British rock in their short five years together. Starting their career in 1982, the indie rock band released four albums with Marr …

From beef noodles to bots: Taiwan’s factcheckers on fighting Chinese disinformation and ‘unstoppable’ AI | Taiwan

From beef noodles to bots: Taiwan’s factcheckers on fighting Chinese disinformation and ‘unstoppable’ AI | Taiwan

Charles Yeh’s battle with disinformation in Taiwan began with a bowl of beef noodles. Nine years ago, the Taiwanese engineer was at a restaurant with his family when his mother-in-law started picking the green onions out of her food. Asked what she was doing, she explained that onions can harm your liver. She knew this, she said, because she had received text messages telling her so. Yeh was puzzled by this. His family had always happily eaten green onions. So he decided to set the record straight. He put the truth in a blog post and circulated it among family and friends through the messaging app Line. They shared it more broadly, and soon he received requests from strangers asking to be connected to his personal Line account. “There wasn’t much of a factchecking concept in Taiwan then, but I realised there was a demand. I could also help resolve people’s problems,” Yeh said. So he continued, and in 2015 launched the website MyGoPen, which means, “don’t be fooled again” in Taiwanese. Within two years, …

India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup clash prompts New York to beef up security | ICC Men’s T20 World Cup News

State governor says there are no ‘credible threats’ to the tournament or the India-Pakistan match on June 9. Security arrangements in New York will be “elevated” for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, especially ahead of the marquee clash between India and Pakistan at Eisenhower Park in Long Island, the state’s governor has said. The South Asian rivals are set to meet at the Nassau County Stadium in Eisenhower Park, Long Island on June 9 in a Group A fixture that is expected to be a sellout, attracting tens of thousands of cricket fans to New York. “In preparation for the @cricketworldcup, my team has been working with federal & local law enforcement to keep attendees safe,” Governor Kathy Hochul wrote in a post on X on Wednesday but added that there was “no credible threat at this time”. Hochul said she had asked the state police to elevate security measures and the state will “continue to monitor” them in the lead-up to the tournament. The Drake-Kendrick Lamar Rap Beef Is Burning Out

The Drake-Kendrick Lamar Rap Beef Is Burning Out

When USC professor and hip-hop scholar Todd Boyd remembers hearing Tupac Shakur’s scathing diss track “Hit ‘Em Up,” he knew one thing: “This is not going to end well.” The West Coast anthem was released in June 1996 and Shakur viciously took aim at his East Coast rivals, including the Notorious B.I.G. with claims — through strikingly chosen words — that he slept with Biggie’s wife, R&B singer Faith Evans. The rap war escalated to new heights, and three months later Shakur was shot to death in Las Vegas, with some wondering (though apparently incorrectly) whether the beef had anything to with it. And a few months after that, Biggie was shot dead in Los Angeles though his killer never apprehended. Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s current rap beef has Boyd reflecting on the past.  “This can’t end well. It can’t. The possibility of it going wrong is very high,” the author of Rapper’s Deluxe: How Hip Hop Made the World tells The Hollywood Reporter. “To accuse someone of being guilty of domestic violence [or] accuse …

His comments mark a shift, as the president has previously shown unwavering support for Israel’s war on Hamas despite domestic and international concerns over the civilian deaths and destruction in Gaza. President Biden is seen at the White House on May 2. In an interview with CNN on Wednesday, Biden said he would halt some weapons shipments to Israel if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a full invasion of Rafah. Nicholas Galitzine Admits Feeling ‘Like A Cut Of Beef’ Since Rise To Fame

Nicholas Galitzine Admits Feeling ‘Like A Cut Of Beef’ Since Rise To Fame

Nicholas Galitzine is definitely the man of the moment right now, but the British star has opened up about the toll his new-found fame has taken on him. The actor has been on the rise in recent years thanks to his roles in Red, White & Royal Blue, Mary & George, Bottoms and, most recently, The Idea Of You with Anne Hathaway. His various romantic roles have quickly landed Nicholas heartthrob status, but he’s admitted he’s not always found it easy to be seen as such. “I think the most important thing to me is that I’m taken seriously as a performer,” he shared in a recent interview with GQ Hype. “I’m not gonna ask you to cry me a river here, but it’s been difficult being part of a conversation that feels very much like I am a cut of beef at a meat market,” he said of the overly objectifying attitude that can pervade his work and personal life. “I think that being my defining feature is something I’m constantly terrified of.” Nicholas …

Drake v Kendrick Lamar’s rap beef has turned very ugly – who is benefiting from such a spectacle? | Nels Abbey

The sight of two (or more) people tearing chunks out of each other is one of humanity’s first and most enduring forms of entertainment. The sheer excitement, the intrigue, the unpredictability, the adrenaline rush, the bloodlust: who can resist? And in exchange for their courage, discipline and possibly even their lives, we reward our gladiators handsomely. It’s payday for the poetic, profit-seeking, pride-protecting feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, easily the landmark competitive event of our time. Rappers are our modern gladiators (and poet laureates). And thanks to social media and the fact that every major media organisation worth its salt – the BBC, the New York Times, the Guardian – has dedicated prominent real estate to cover and contextualise the beef blow-by-blow, track-by-track, the world is their colosseum. Are you not entertained? We see all the modern tools of warfare deployed: high- and low-tech espionage, infiltration of enemy camps, artificial intelligence (Drake released a record with AI-generated verses from Snoop Dogg and the late Tupac Shakur, both, like Lamar, west coast icons). There has …
