From Yoko Ono to Barbie: seven of the best art exhibitions this summer | Why I Love My Art Pass

Art is essential to humanity. People want to create for myriad reasons including the exploration and expression of difficult ideas, self-help and for the joy of others. It is primal, social and serves as a historical document. It can be a thing of beauty or a source of horror. It can offer endless comfort or an inspiring push out of the comfort zone. It can leave us cold or change our lives. “Having access to art is more important than ever as it gets us off the screens and into a stimulating and thought-provoking environment,” says Daisy Bell, co-founder and director of Cramer & Bell, an art consultancy practice. “We live in a society where we spend more and more time behind screens, where we are zoning out of face-to-face conversations to watch reels or read a WhatsApp message. Experiencing art encourages creativity and self-expression and is proven to reduce stress and improve brain function. Art also gives people freedom of expression; whether political, environmental or social.” Now, as the days lengthen, it’s the perfect …

‘Coming out, it was like a veil was lifted’: Indigo Girls on homophobia, hope and their big Barbie moment | Indigo Girls

In 1990, as her duo Indigo Girls were heading to platinum-selling success in the US, Amy Ray founded her own label called Daemon Records, formed as “a supportive network for each other within it, almost like a co-op,” she says. She internalised this “ecosystem idea” from Fugazi’s Ian MacKaye and the Washington DC punk scene, as well as the 90s riot grrrl movement. But the inspiring new documentary, It’s Only Life After All, makes it clear that Ray also learned quite a bit about the power of community from Indigo Girls themselves: the folk band she co-founded in Atlanta with high-school choir buddy Emily Saliers. The duo twice broke into the US Top 10, won a Grammy, and sold millions of albums in the late 80s and early 90s, and today remain a reliable, busy touring and recording act – even earning a high-profile spot in the Barbie movie. Community is woven into every aspect of their lives and careers: the women are principled activists and queer icons who have a fiercely devoted fanbase, and …

Ryan Gosling Avoids Darker Roles So He Can Be a Better Papi

Ryan Gosling Avoids Darker Roles So He Can Be a Better Papi

In his review for Ryan Gosling’s new film The Fall Guy, Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson notes that the actor’s first post-Barbie role shows Gosling “still leading with his light side.” And thank goodness for that. “This is the better form of Gosling,” writes Lawson, “mesmerizing as some of his grim, laconic performances have been.” According to Gosling, it’s also an intentional move, as he recently told the Wall Street Journal. At present, said Gosling, “I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place.” Instead, he chooses roles by “trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva, and we make them with our family in mind first.” Eva, of course, is Eva Mendes, Gosling’s costar in the 2012 drama The Place Beyond the Pines. They share two daughters, 9-year-old Esmeralda and 8-year-old Amada, who call him “Papi,” he confirmed: “It kills me every time. There’s just nothing, …

Ryan Gosling Gets Candid About How Being A Dad Has Affected Which Roles He Says Yes To

Ryan Gosling has claimed that he always has his family in mind when selecting roles these days. The three-time Oscar nominee is a dad to two daughters, nine-year-old Esmeralda Amada and eight-year-old Amanda Lee, who he shares with his long-term partner Eva Mendes. While Ryan has plenty of hard-hitting roles in his back catalogue, including the neo-Nazi drama The Believer and the violent action drama Drive, he’s said that more recently, he’s leaning towards lighter projects, so he can be more present with his family after a day’s shooting is over. “I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place,” he told WSJ magazine. “This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva and we make them with our family in mind first.” Ryan claimed this shift began with the musical La La Land, with subsequent projects including the Neil …

Paris Hilton poses in an animal-print string bikini and harness for ‘Cowboy Barbie’ Coachella snaps

While “that’s hot” may mean one thing for attendees at the desert music festival Coachella, it certainly means something else for Paris Hilton. The 43-year-old hotel heiress and DJ attended the music festival in Indio, California over the weekend for its first three days, and was even a surprise guest for Vampire Weekend’s set. While she brought a host of looks that spanned her flowy and colorful range to black on black ensembles, for one of her many photoshoots, she took things up a notch considerably. Barbie as Philosophy | Blog of the APA

Barbie as Philosophy | Blog of the APA

If we want to understand the relationship between philosophy and film, what better place to start than the best film of 2023! No, I’m not talking about that award-laden nuclear nonsense Oppenheimer. I am, of course, talking about Greta Gerwig’s masterpiece Barbie. It shouldn’t be a surprise that philosophy might contribute to our understanding of Barbie—philosophers of art seek to understand how we engage with artworks so the theories they develop should be applicable to a particular work of art. What might be more surprising is the idea that Barbie can contribute to our understanding of philosophy. According to the film-as-philosophy movement, some narrative films should be regarded as works of philosophy that make an active contribution to our philosophical knowledge. I claim that Barbie is just such a film. The contributions it makes to our understanding of philosophical topics such as gender, freedom, and society are just as legitimate as those made by more traditional works of political philosophy. My positive case for this conclusion is quite simple: go watch the movie! If I’m …
