Los Angeles Fires Move Artists to Launch Funding Efforts

Los Angeles Fires Move Artists to Launch Funding Efforts

In Los Angeles this week, museums burned to the ground, many artists’ homes were lost, and a number of artworks were endangered. And with four fires currently blazing, members of the city’s art scene have banded together to raise money for artists and art workers impacted by all the destruction. On Thursday, a GoFundMe effort was launched by artists Andrea Bowers and Kathryn Andrews, Various Small Fires senior director Ariel Pittman, Vielmetter Los Angeles associate director Olivia Gauthier, and arts professional Julia V. Hendrickson. As of publication time, the fund had already raised more than $23,000. Related Articles “Over the last few days,” they wrote in their GoFundMe’s description, “we have watched as neighborhoods that are home to many of Los Angeles’ artists, gallerists, and cultural workers burn to the ground in an unprecedented Santa Ana wind and fire event. Many members of our personal communities, and our broader creative communities, have lost everything. The ramifications of that impact are varied: some people will be able to rebuild, while others may not have the same …

DAG Foundation Launches New $20,000 Annual Prize for Visual Artists

The DAG Foundation has created a new, annual $20,000 award aimed at supporting early and mid-career visual artists working in the United States. “We wanted to try to fill a gap by reaching artists that are at a point where they’ve established themselves and they’re hard-working, but they might not have the resources to reach the next level, and they’re certainly not at the same level yet where everything’s easy and cushy,” DAG Foundation co-founder Alyssa Graham told ARTnews. “The people who have started a career and are somewhat accomplished, but haven’t won the big awards yet or haven’t been rewarded for their accomplishments yet, financially.” Related Articles One artist will be awarded the prize each year. Those considered cannot have won, or been a finalist for, a major national or international art prize. The winner of the DAG Prize for visual arts will be able to use the funds for materials, studio space, exhibition costs, travel for research, or other resources necessary to create and present a new visual art project. There will also …

Notable Artists, Dealers, and Collectors Who Died

Notable Artists, Dealers, and Collectors Who Died

There were times in 2024 when it felt as though an entire chapter of art history was being lost. Crack open a modern art textbook, and note how many figures from the section on Minimalism died this year alone: Frank Stella, Carl Andre, Richard Serra. Stella and Serra’s deaths, plus those of artists working at the same time like Faith Ringgold and Jackie Winsor, recently moved critic Barry Schwabsky to ask if an entire New York scene had died this year as well. It wasn’t just artists in New York who died this year, of course. Giants of other countries also passed: the German sculptor Rebecca Horn, the Austrian performance artist Günter Brus, the Saudi Arabian painter Safeya Binzagr, the Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe. And it wasn’t just artists, either. Dealers Barbara Gladstone and Pierre Levai died this year, along with collectors Rosa de la Cruz and Leonard Riggio, curator Kasper König, and art historian David Anfam. Below, a look back at some of the most notable art-world figures who died in 2024. Read more …

Three Artists Drop Out of Show at Scuola Piccola Zattere

Three Artists Drop Out of Show at Scuola Piccola Zattere

Last week, Swiss artist Reto Pulfer, Iranian artist Maryam Hoseini, and German artist Anna Witt demanded their work be removed from the inaugural exhibition at nonprofit Scuola Piccola Zattere in Venice. The show, titled  “One Year Score: Primo Movimento,” opened on November 22 and is scheduled to run until March 30, 2025. Three artists remain in the exhibition: Agnieska Mastalerz from Poland and Italians Ludovica Carbotta and Tomaso De Luca.   Scuola Piccola Zattere was founded in November by Victoria Mikhelson, the daughter of Russian billionaire Leonid Mikhelson, a close ally of Russian president Vladimir Putin and a public supporter of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Leonid Mikhelson was sanctioned by the UK government in 2022 and, while he has not been sanctioned by the US, several companies supplied by his operations have been. He is the founder and chairman of Russian natural gas producer Novatek, which supplies gas to Russia’s Sverdlov Plant. That plant was sanctioned by the US in 2023 and makes explosives and ammunition used by the Russian military in Ukraine. He …

George Washington Carver Exhibition Looks at His Influences on Artists

George Washington Carver Exhibition Looks at His Influences on Artists

Historically, the relationship between Black Americans and the American South—in both the art world and the world writ large—is reduced to that of oppression and enslavement, with little attention paid to the creative and scientific innovations that both preceded and followed emancipation. The California African American Museum in Los Angeles hopes to change that limited understanding with its current exhibition, “World Without End: The George Washington Carver Project” (on view through March 2), which opened this fall as part of the Getty Foundation’s PST ART exhibition initiative. The show gives George Washington Carver his long-overdue flowers, not just for his scientific prowess but also for his less celebrated work as an artist. Cocurated by CAAM executive director Cameron Shaw and independent curator Yael Lipschutz, the show aims to illustrate how Carver’s creative thinking fueled his technological advancements. Related Articles Carver, an innovative scientist and educator who was born into slavery, was renowned in the early 20th century for his myriad agricultural inventions—often left unpatented by the self-proclaimed “people’s scientist” by design. Artists Call on Tate to Divest from Donors with Ties to Israel

More than 600 artists and art workers have signed an open letter calling on the Tate in London to sever ties with arts organizations whose founders have financial ties to Israel. The letter, addressed to Tate leadership ahead of the Turner Prize ceremony on December 3, calls for the museum to divest from the Zabludowicz Art Trust, Zabludowicz Art Projects, and Outset Contemporary Art Fund. The three organizations are run separately by arts philanthropists Anita and Poju Zabludowicz and Candida Gertler. Signatories of the letter include Jasleen Kaur, a current Turner Prize nominee, as well as past Turner Prize winners such as Charlotte Prodger, Helen Cammock, and Lawrence Abu Hamdan. Artists Jumana Manna, Sophia al-Maria, Gala Porras-Kim, Evan Ifekoya and Dala Nasser were also among the signatories. Related Articles The letter accuses the groups’ founders of being connected to Israel’s “genocidal” policies in Gaza, citing findings from the International Court of Justice and the United Nations that describe Israel’s military actions as being consistent with genocide and apartheid. Amnesty International has also labeled Israel’s policies …

Who Are the Young British Artists? An Overview of the Movement

Who Are the Young British Artists? An Overview of the Movement

In 1988, a group of art students from London’s Goldsmiths College united to exhibit their art together. Their techniques, mediums, and ideas were different, but they all shared a deeply polarizing attitude toward art with an entrepreneurial approach. The versatile and multifaceted YBAs are often regarded as controversial, with their unconventional materials and sometimes repulsive topics unacceptable to some. Read on to learn more about the Young British Artists and their art.   Young British Artists: Origins and Characteristics Freeze exhibition in London, 1988. Source: Phaidon   The Young British Artists, also known as YBAs, were a loose group of art students sharing one exhibition space. The history of the group started in 1988, when a second-year student of Goldsmiths College Damien Hirst organized a show titled Freeze. This exhibit brought together recent alumni and current students. They shared neither techniques nor ideologies but rather a sense of current time and place, originating from a single cultural strata. Despite major art galleries initially ignoring Hirst’s initiative, he managed to find private sponsors and soon …
