Apple’s Vision Pro might add support for PlayStation VR controllers

Apple’s Vision Pro might add support for PlayStation VR controllers

Apple is looking to make its Vision Pro mixed reality device more attractive to gamers and game developers, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The Vision Pro has been pitched as more of a productivity and media consumption device than something aimed at gamers, due in part to relying on eye and hand controls rather than incorporating a separate controller. But Apple may need gamers if it wants to expand the Vision Pro’s audience, especially since Gurman reports that less than half a million units have been sold thus far. So the company has been reportedly talking to Sony about adding support for the PlayStation VR2’s hand controllers, while also talking to developers about whether they’d support the controllers in their games. By offering more precise control, Apple could also make other types of software, like Final Cut Pro or Adobe Photoshop, usable on the Vision Pro. Source link

EU closes antitrust probe into Apple’s e-book and audiobook rules after complaint withdrawn

EU closes antitrust probe into Apple’s e-book and audiobook rules after complaint withdrawn

The European Commission (EC) has quietly closed a longstanding antitrust investigation into Apple over rules it enforces against third-party e-book and audiobook app developers. The EC opened the probe back in 2020 after receiving complaints over how Apple forced competing e-book and audiobook app developers to use Apple’s own in-app payment system, while also preventing them from informing customers of alternative ways to pay — a practice known as anti-steering. The EC opened a parallel investigation into similar practices vis à vis music-streaming apps, a move prompted by complaints made by Spotify. For the music-streaming part, Apple was hit by a $2 billion fine in March. However, the undisclosed complainant in the e-book / audiobook aspect of the investigation has since withdrawn their complaint, leading the Commission to close the probe with no further action. “The closure of an investigation is not a finding that the conduct in question complies with EU competition rules,” the announcement clarified. Can Apple’s new AI photo ‘Clean up’ tool beat Google’s Magic Editor? For some users, yes

Can Apple’s new AI photo ‘Clean up’ tool beat Google’s Magic Editor? For some users, yes

Jason Hiner/ZDNET A good camera, photo skills, and a worthy subject are only part of the equation when capturing the perfect photo. Some factors are out of your control, such as objects or people in the background that you can not move but are in the way of your perfect shot. That’s where AI can help.  With Monday’s release of iOS 18.1, Apple introduced an AI-powered “Clean-up” feature, available in the editing section of the Photos library.  With this feature, you can remove unwanted elements of a photo and seamlessly blend the background back in.  Also: Apple just gave the MacBook Air a big performance upgrade – at no extra cost Although this is a new and exciting feature for iOS users, Google has had a similar feature, Magic Editor, available for Pixel phones since 2023. Google recently expanded its offering to all Google Photos users  — including iOS users.  So, the question is: Was Apple’s counterpart worth the wait? To find out, I tested both tools using photos — from my recent trip — …

Apple’s iPadOS 18 is causing big problems for some iPad owners

The iPadOS 18 rollout isn’t going exactly as planned. Apple has reportedly pulled iPadOS 18 for M4 iPad Pro devices, per MacRumors, over an update that is causing issues for some iPads. According to reports on Reddit and Apple’s official Community portal, iPadOS 18 is “bricking” select M4 iPad Pro devices (bricking is slang for rendering the device completely useless as it cannot be turned on anymore). SEE ALSO: New iPad mini might be coming soon “At some point during the update my iPad turned off, and would no longer turn on. I walked away during the update so I’m not sure when it broke. I tried all of the reset options but nothing worked. I just took it to the Apple Store who confirmed it’s completely bricked, but they said they had to send it out to their engineers before they can give me a replacement even though I have Apple care,” wrote one Redditor.
