Among chimpanzees, peeing is contagious

Among chimpanzees, peeing is contagious

Hate waiting in line for the bathroom? Chimpanzees have a social solution: Everyone go at once. A study now shows that among chimps, peeing is contagious. It’s “the first study to investigate contagious urination in animals,” says Shinya Yamamoto. He studies animal behavior at Kyoto University in Japan. His coworker, Ena Onishi, was first to get an inkling of this contagious tinkling. She, too, studies animal behavior at Kyoto University. And she spotted something odd while watching a group of captive chimps. @sciencenewsofficial Chimpanzees sync their pee! #chimpanzee #animals #science ♬ original sound – sciencenewsofficial – sciencenewsofficial https://www.tiktok.com/embed.js “I noticed a tendency for [them] to urinate at the same time,” she says. Onishi then wondered if peeing — like yawning and grooming — is contagious in these animals. To find out, she and some coworkers spent more than 600 hours studying 20 captive chimps. These animals lived at the Kumamoto Sanctuary in Japan. The team observed chimpanzees peeing more than 1,300 times. And the chimps were likely to pee together, these data revealed. If one …

While new EVs will pay just £10 in the first year, this is set to rise to £190 annually — still less than the £335 charged for vans. Additionally, from April 2025, EVs worth more than £40,000 will also face a £195 Expensive Car Supplement. A poll of Independent readers revealed that 70 per cent believe EVs should pay the same road tax as petrol and diesel cars, while 21 per cent think they should pay but less. Just 9 per cent argued EVs should remain exempt. When we asked for your comments, some said taxing EVs was a step backward in the fight against climate change, …

Perceived peer norms, not porn use, associated with negative views of women among college men

Perceived peer norms, not porn use, associated with negative views of women among college men

What college men think their male friends consider acceptable when it comes to pornography may shape their views about women, according to new research. A study published in the American Journal of Sexuality Education found that the strongest link to negative attitudes towards women was not a man’s own pornography habits, but rather his belief that his peers approved of pornography depicting rape. This suggests that peer influence plays a powerful role in shaping attitudes related to harmful content. Sexual aggression is a serious issue, particularly among young adults. It encompasses a range of harmful behaviors, from unwanted sexual contact and harassment to attempted or completed rape. Sadly, college-aged women are disproportionately affected by sexual aggression, with male perpetrators being most commonly identified. A concerning number of men, between 10% and 29%, commit acts of sexual aggression during their college years. The negative impact of sexual victimization is extensive, affecting psychological well-being, academic performance, and relationships. Therefore, understanding what contributes to men’s likelihood of committing sexual aggression against women is an important area of research. …

Study links rising suicidality among teen girls to increase in identifying as LGBQ

Study links rising suicidality among teen girls to increase in identifying as LGBQ

A new study published in Educational Researcher suggests that the rise in suicidal thoughts and behaviors among high school girls in recent years might be connected to an increase in the number of girls identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or questioning (LGBQ). While rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors remained steady within both heterosexual and LGBQ groups of girls, the overall rise in female suicidality appears linked to the increase in girls identifying as LGBQ, a group that historically faces greater social pressures and mental health challenges. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that a substantial number of teenage girls have seriously considered suicide, made suicide plans, or attempted suicide in recent years. This increase has prompted examination into potential contributing factors, and the researchers aimed to explore a connection between this trend and the simultaneous increase in the number of girls identifying as LGBQ. Previous research has consistently shown that LGBQ youth experience higher rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors compared to their heterosexual peers. The new study …
