Alternative provision: DfE data under-states vacancies

More from this theme Recent articles Government data appears to under-state the extent of teacher vacancies in alternative provision because it combines data with that of special schools, a new report has warned. The National Foundation for Educational Research called on the government to report separately the vacancy rate for special and AP schools in its national workforce statistics, which are published annually. The latest figures show state-funded special schools and pupil referral units (PRUs) had an average vacancy rate of 0.8 per cent – or 0.8 per 100 posts – higher than the total figure for all state-funded schools of 0.6. But analysis of school-level data by the NFER found that special schools “have a substantially lower rate of teacher vacancies, on average, than PRUs and other forms of alternative provision”. In fact, the average vacancy rate is twice as high in AP (1.4 per cent) than in special schools (0.7 per cent). “Whilst this does not mean the vacancy rate in special schools is low (it is similar to secondary schools, where recruitment …

Aptoide Alternative App Store Launches in the EU With Access to Older Versions of Games

iPhone and iPad users in the European Union now have access to another alternative app store with the official launch of Aptoide, a gaming marketplace. Aptoide has been around for quite some time as an app marketplace on Android devices, but the company began working on an iOS marketplace when Apple added support for sideloading apps last year. The marketplace has been in testing in a beta capacity since June 2024, but it is now available to all EU users. “This full launch marks a major milestone in game distribution on iOS and Aptoide’s commitment to an open and unrestricted app distribution ecosystem. Apple users now have access to newfound freedoms, but there’s a huge amount of work still to be done to continue opening up iOS globally and reduce friction for users, and game developers.” Aptoide is a free alternative app store that’s available on iPhones and iPads for those who are located in the European Union. It is unique among app marketplaces because it adds support for App Versions, so users are able …

Tupac Shakur trial: Defence lawyers investigate possible alternative cause of death | Ents & Arts News

Lawyers for the man suspected of killing rap icon Tupak Shakur are investigating evidence that could show an alternative cause of death. Duane “Keffe D” Davis is the only person still alive who was in the vehicle from which shots were fired in Las Vegas, Nevada, on 7 September 1996. Shakur died from his injuries six days later. And Davis’s lawyers say they have witness information that Shakur was in stable condition after the shooting. They are consulting medical and forensic experts to evaluate potential alternative causes of death. Defence lawyers also want to delay next month’s trial, saying more time is needed for investigative work to ensure Davis gets a fair trial. The motion filed on Friday in a Nevada court provides insight into Davis’ defence, noting that a private investigator has identified witnesses who can testify that he was not at the scene of the 1996 shooting, nor was he in Las Vegas at the time. EU invests €422m to expand alternative fuels infrastructure

EU invests €422m to expand alternative fuels infrastructure

In a significant move towards greener transportation, the European Commission has selected 39 groundbreaking projects across the EU to expand alternative fuels infrastructure. These projects will receive a total investment of €422m through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), reinforcing the EU’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality. This substantial financial boost aims to accelerate the transition to cleaner and more sustainable transport options. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, commented: “The 39 projects we are supporting today will accelerate the deployment of critical recharging and refuelling infrastructure needed for our expanding zero-emission fleets. “Together, they will add nearly 5,000 new charging points, including 626 mega-watt chargers, helping citizens choose zero-emission vehicles and contribute to a cleaner environment.” Key investments in clean transport solutions The selected projects will drive the deployment of essential infrastructure for alternative fuels. A significant portion of the funding will support the installation of 2,500 public electric recharging points for light-duty vehicles and 2,400 for heavy-duty vehicles along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). Additionally, 35 …

Ahimsic Communication: An Alternative to Civility

Ahimsic Communication: An Alternative to Civility

When it comes to contentious conversations, the call for civility is commonplace. Rarely do we hear a call for nonviolence in communication. This is unfortunate, since nonviolence is a better standard than civility (which I critiqued in part one of this three-part series). Part of the problem is that a framework for communicative nonviolence has not (to my knowledge) been fully developed. Mohandas (“Mahatma”) Gandhi, the “father of nonviolence,” is widely known for nonviolence, but primarily in the realm of noncommunicative action. However, there is a natural line of development in that direction from elements in his thought: Gandhi derives his commitment to nonviolence (ahimsa in Sanskrit) from his law of Truth, which directs us to follow “Truth in thought, Truth in speech, and Truth in action” (my emphasis). Inspired by Gandhi among others, Marshall B. Rosenberg developed what he termed Nonviolent Communication (NVC). Valuable though NVC is, it is most applicable to particular conversational contexts. It is but one part of a broader nonviolent framework, which I’ll call ahimsic communication (AC) to distinguish it …

Can’t do a sit-up? A personal trainer recommends these three alternative exercises to strengthen your abs

Can’t do a sit-up? A personal trainer recommends these three alternative exercises to strengthen your abs

Many of my personal training clients list performing a full sit-up as one of their fitness goals. This gym class throwback may be a basic and well-known exercise, but it’s hardly an easy one. Sit-ups require optimal strength in nearly all of your core muscles, specifically the rectus abdominis (also known as the six pack), the transverse abdomins (the deepest abdominal muscle), and the internal and external obliques (muscles located on each side of the torso). When these muscles aren’t properly conditioned, executing proper form on a sit-up is nearly impossible. If you’ve just begun a fitness routine and want to work towards sit-ups, start with these three essential exercises to build your core strength. The only piece of equipment you’ll need is a mat for support and comfort. Crunch AB EXERCISE – How to do an abdominal crunch (ab crunch) – YouTube Watch On Sets: 3 Reps: 12-15 Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet planted on the mat. Place both hands behind your head for support or across your chest. …

Hisense PX3-Pro Review: A Giant TV Alternative

Hisense PX3-Pro Review: A Giant TV Alternative

We all want a cinematic experience at home, but nobody with a sense for aesthetics wants to hang a gigantic TV in the middle of their living room, even if it can pretend to be art when you’re not streaming The Great British Bake Off. Short-throw laser projectors, like the Hisense PX3 Pro, sit right on a TV stand and can project a giant 100 to 130-inch image onto a pull-down screen. That makes them a quick and hideable way to get a big-screen experience without cluttering up your visual space. With its third generation, Hisense has once again made a simple, great-looking model that can act as an all-in-one for everyone from well-heeled average viewers to genuine cinephiles. Whether you’re looking to watch Dune or game at a high refresh rate, it performs as well (and is more convenient) than many superlarge TVs. If you’ve been considering a nice projector, this might be the one. Short Throw The PX3 Pro is an attractive gray box that has four white lights on the front when …

Hidden variable alternative to quantum spookiness fails

For all of history, there’s been an underlying but unspoken assumption about the laws that govern the Universe: that if you know enough information about a system, like the positions, momenta, and properties of the particles within it, then you can use that information to predict precisely how that system will evolve and behave in the future. The assumption is, in other words, that the equations governing the Universe are deterministic. The classical equations of motion — Newton’s laws — are completely deterministic. The laws of gravity, both Newton’s and Einstein’s, are deterministic. Even Maxwell’s equations, governing classical electricity and magnetism, are 100% deterministic as well. But that picture of the Universe got turned on its head with a series of discoveries that began in the late 1800s. Starting with radioactivity and radioactive decay, humanity slowly uncovered aspects about the nature of reality that …

Why the far-right AfD has been so successful in Germany – video explainer | Alternative für Deutschland (AfD)

The far-right, anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) is riding a populist wave across Europe’s largest economy. According to polls conducted this month, the AfD has become the strongest party in Thuringia, a former state of the communist German Democratic Republic (GDR). In Saxony, another former GDR state, the party finished a very close second behind the CDU. The Guardian’s Berlin correspondent, Deborah Cole, explains how the AfD has risen from its eurosceptic origins to a party that is ‘managing to set the agenda’ in German politics Source link
