SpaceX’s Starship blows up ahead of 10th test flight

[ad_1] One of SpaceX’s Starship rockets exploded on a test stand in Texas late on Wednesday night, as the company prepared for the tenth test flight of the heavy-lift rocket system. SpaceX said “all personnel are safe and accounted for” in a post on X, and claimed there are “no hazards to residents in surrounding communities.” The company said in a later update on Thursday that an initial analysis suggests the explosion was caused by a failure of of a “pressurized tank known as a COPV, or composite overwrapped pressure vessel” in the Starship’s nosecone. The enormous explosion caused damage to the area surrounding the test stand, according to SpaceX. But the company said there are no reported injuries. SpaceX was preparing to perform a “static fire” of the Starship’s six Raptor engines, and so the area around the rocket had been cleared prior to the explosion. Ahead of Protests, Waymo Scales Back Robotaxi Service Nationwide

[ad_1] Waymo will temporarily limit robotaxi service in all of its nationwide markets, the company said Friday, as US cities prepare for a wave of protests of federal immigration policies and law enforcement and military crackdowns on demonstrators. The Alphabet subsidiary will stop service in Los Angeles altogether. Waymo spokesperson Sandy Karp confirmed the service pause and adjustments but declined to comment further. There is no indication how long the service changes will last. The adjustments will affect service in San Francisco; Austin, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; and Phoenix, Arizona. On Friday afternoon, some San Francisco riders saw in-app messages showing that all of the company’s robotaxis were busy, and so unable to pick up rides. The move comes a week after protesters set fire to five autonomous taxis operated by the company in downtown Los Angeles. Images of the fires went viral on social media, and became a flashpoint in discussions about protester violence and the role tech plays in citizen surveillance. Leicestershire Police issued an alert ahead of the event at Donington Park, which begins on Friday. Posting on Facebook, the force said, in previous years, they received “a rise of nearly 700 extra 999 calls” caused by energetic dancing at Download. “The tech assumed that people in mosh pits had been in a collision, causing 999 contacts and abandoned 999 calls,” said the post.
