Royal allergies: Coeliac disease, animals & more affecting Kate Middleton, Queen Camilla and co

Allergies are things that everybody suffers with – even if you are a royal! Prince William famously joked that he was “allergic to selfies” back in 2018 during an outing in Olso, but there several of his royal family members suffer from genuine health conditions. © Cameron SmithPrince William taking a selfie Whether it’s seasonal changes such as hay fever or autoimmune diseases, allergies are one way that the royal family are just like us.  Keep scrolling to see which members of the royal household suffer and what allergy they suffer from… Queen Elizabeth  II © GettyQueen Elizabeth II considered her corgis to be like family The late Queen Elizabeth II was a big dog lover but her adoration for corgis isn’t the only reason dogs were kept during her reign.  According to Country Life, Her late Majesty suffered from an allergy to cats. Whilst the former monarch never discussed the reported health woe publicly, it would make sense as to why she always opted to surround herself with dogs. The Duchess of York now looks after …

‘It’s very easy to steal someone’s voice’: how AI is affecting video game actors | Artificial intelligence (AI)

When she discovered her voice had been uploaded to multiple websites without her consent, the actor Cissy Jones told them to take it down immediately. Some complied. “Others who have more money in their banks basically sent me the email equivalent of a digital middle finger and said: don’t care,” Jones recalls by phone. “That was the genesis for me to start talking to friends of mine about: listen, how do we do this the right way? How do we understand that the genie is out of the bottle and find a way to be a part of the conversation or we will get systematically annihilated? I know that sounds dramatic but, given how easy it is to steal a person’s voice, it’s not far off the mark.” Jones, 45, a voice artist with credits including Starfield and Baldur’s Gate III, was wrestling with the march of artificial intelligence (AI) into video games, increasingly recognised as less a niche pursuit for bedroom-dwelling teenagers than a storytelling platform with almost unlimited potential. Hollywood actors such as …

Social Security Administration issues new rule preventing food assistance from affecting payouts

Social Security Administration issues new rule preventing food assistance from affecting payouts

The Social Security Administration (SSA) will implement a new rule aimed at removing barriers and increasing monthly payouts for those who receive certain government benefits, the government agency announced Wednesday.  Beginning at the end of next September, the agency will no longer include food assistance when calculating one’s eligibility for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) monthly payments.  Those who qualify for SSI benefits include adults and children with a disability or blindness and adults 65 years and older who have limited income and resources. These benefits help cover the costs of basic resources including housing, food, medicine, and clothing.  About 7.4 million Americans are currently recipients of SSI or Social Security payments, according to the SSA’s February data. To receive SSI benefits, individuals must meet certain eligibility requirements, which are calculated under a rule titled “In-Kind Support and Maintenance (ISM).” Under the current rules, food, shelter or both are counted as unearned income, which can impact an individual’s eligibility or lessen their payments.  Starting Sept. 30 of this year, the agency will no longer include food in …

People in the UK: tell us about your local river and the environmental issues affecting it | Rivers

Many of the rivers in England are affected by sewage and agricultural waste, with those in the northern part of the country experiencing the highest rates of waste discharge. New Environment Agency data shows 2023 was the worst year on record for storm water pollution. The river Irwell, which is a popular waterway for rowers, and surrounding catchment area is now the most frequent sewage dumping ground in England. Storm overflows around the Irwell valley discharged raw sewage 12,000 times in 2023 — the highest rate of all English rivers when accounting for length, at 95 spills per mile. We would like to hear about the environmental state of your local river and the nearby area. Are you aware of any sewage spills or other polluting factors? How has the river changed over time, and are you involved in any schemes to monitor or improve it? What impact has it had, if any? Your responses, which can be anonymous, are secure as the form is encrypted and only the Guardian has access to your contributions. …

How is renewed violence in Myanmar affecting the Rohingya? | Rohingya News

The Rohingya are yet again bearing the brunt of renewed fighting and military air strikes in Myanmar, United Nations chief Antonio Guterres warned this week. The latest wave of fighting by armed groups who want to overturn the country’s 2021 military coup flared up at the end of October last year. The military extended the country’s state of emergency in January and announced a new, mandatory conscription programme in February, which many fear may also disproportionately affect the Rohingya people. Not only are the Muslim-majority Rohingya being bombed “indiscriminately” but they are also being forcefully drafted into the army even though they are not recognised as citizens and have long been subject to persecution by the the Myanmar authorities, particularly the military. Here’s what we know so far: What is happening in Myanmar? Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, was under military rule for five decades until the 2015 election, when Aung San Suu Kyi won a landslide victory. However, the military led a coup against her on February 1, 2021, prompting mass protests that evolved …

how climate change is already badly affecting children’s education

how climate change is already badly affecting children’s education

Schools across South Sudan have been ordered to close as a heat wave of 45°C sweeps across the country. In recent years, severe flooding has already caused major disruptions to schooling in South Sudan where, on average, children complete less than five years of formal education across their lives. As researchers interested in both climate change and learning, we’ve been surprised that most public debate in this area concerns how best to teach children about climate change as part of the curriculum. Recently, we examined a less discussed, but arguably much more consequential, question: How is climate change impacting children’s education worldwide? In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, my colleagues and I reviewed studies linking climate change-related events or “climate stressors” to education outcomes. One of the clearest connections was between heat exposure and reduced academic performance. A study in the US found that adolescents’ maths scores decreased significantly on days above 26°C. In China, hotter day-of-test temperatures were associated with a drop in exam performance equal to losing a quarter of …

Everyone is starting to guess how wealthy my fiance is. How do I stop this affecting my friendships? | Relationships

Everyone is starting to guess how wealthy my fiance is. How do I stop this affecting my friendships? | Relationships

After a decades-long saga, I have finally got engaged to the love of my life. A lot of my friends have followed the story over the years and appear mostly very happy it all sorted itself out. Naturally after such a long time, we want to enjoy each other’s company and do nice things. Although I am successful and work full-time, I am also spending good chunks of time doing exciting things with him overseas. My dilemma is that everyone is starting to guess how wealthy my new man is because of the lifestyle he leads, the fact he retired early, and the amount of travel he does. He really is very wealthy and not even my family knows the extent. I am not a kept woman by a long shot and we are not flashy. But a few of my very good old friends have asked me outright: ‘How much money does he actually have?’ I am finding it very hard to wriggle out of this question. I don’t like to lie outright and …

POLL: Are you worried about Spain’s drought affecting summer holidays? | World | News

Several Spanish areas are experiencing a long-lasting drought, which is forcing local governments to enforce rules to reduce water consumption. The areas most affected are, incidentally, those most beloved by tourists – Catalonia, Valencia, Murcia and Andalusia. As reservoir levels run worryingly dry, are you worried this extreme weather condition may affect your summer holidays? In Andalusia, where millions of tourists flock every year, the reservoirs are only 25.43 percent full. The city with the driest reservoirs is Almeria, where over the past week the water level fell by a further 0.45 percent to an astonishing 8.48 percent.  If you can’t see the poll above, click here.  Reservoir levels are only slightly better in Murcia, at 26.35 percent, while in Catalonia are at 42.15 percent. As no rainfall is seemingly on the horizon in the latter region, according to weather forecasters, authorities in Barcelona sent last month 24,000 warning letters to residents accused of consuming “excessive amounts of water”. This measure was adopted weeks after the region banned a series of water-consuming activities, including filling …

Apple Investigating ‘Ghost Touches’ Issue Affecting Some Series 9 and Ultra 2 Watches

Apple Investigating ‘Ghost Touches’ Issue Affecting Some Series 9 and Ultra 2 Watches

In an internal memo shared with Apple Authorized Service Providers this week, Apple said it is “aware of” and “investigating” a touch-related issue affecting some Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 displays. “Some customers may report their Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra 2 is experiencing false touches on their display,” reads Apple’s memo, obtained by MacRumors. Apple said some customers may describe the issue as “ghost” touches. The issue may cause the screen on affected Apple Watch models to “jump erratically” or exhibit other unexpected behavior, without any user interaction, according to Apple. The memo said the issue can also result in an Apple Watch starting a phone call unintentionally, and prevent users from entering the device’s passcode. Apple recommends that customers keep their Apple Watch’s software up to date, suggesting that the company is hopeful it will be able to address the issue in a future watchOS update. Apple did not say how widespread the issue is, or provide a timeframe for a potential fix. It is unclear …

The storm has caused landslides, power outages, and road and airport closures across Southern California. Mario Tama/Getty Images The second atmospheric river to hit the West Coast in as many weeks has stalled over Southern California, dumping more than 9 inches of rain over 24 hours in some areas near Los Angeles. Streets are flooded in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles; creeks are raging like rivers; and rainfall records in Los Angeles County are nearing all-time records. The storm isn’t over yet. Areas east and south of Los Angeles could see several more inches of rainfall by Tuesday. That includes San Diego, which was inundated a few weeks ago by a different storm. Atmospheric …
