U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a memorandum opinion on Oct. 13 granting a preliminary injunction sought by CNN, MS NOW, and Politico to maintain the block on the president’s press ban, finding that the plaintiffs were likely to succeed on their First Amendment discrimination claim. Trump announced on social media last month that he was banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico “as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” After the outlets sued, Kelly ordered the White House to temporarily restore access on Sept. 24, ruling that the government likely violated their Fifth Amendment due process rights by abruptly taking away their press passes without notice or a hearing. Attorney Theodore J. The Trump administration will no longer allow Microsoft and other tech companies to participate in a program that allows H-1B visa holders to apply for green cards, one of the most common pathways for skilled foreign workers seeking permanent residency in the United States. In addition to Microsoft, administration officials said on Thursday that software giant Adobe and IT companies including Cognizant, Infosys, and Tata will be suspended from the PERM program, the Labor Department’s permanent labor certification program. PERM is a key step for H-1B visa holders to gain permanent residency, requiring employers to prove that there are no American workers who would be suitable for the applicant’s permanent job opportunity. Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling said that the agency is investigating whether these companies committed fraud, undercutting American workers by hiring foreign employees. Vice President JD Vance, meanwhile, singled out Microsoft. “There has been no company in the United States, unfortunately, that has abused this system more than Microsoft,” Vance said during a press conference. In a post on its developer news website today, Apple announced that it will be introducing “additional controls” for the “Full Disk Access” setting on macOS due to new risks posed by AI agents. This announcement comes amid the rise of always-on AI agents like Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots, which have prompted privacy concerns. “Some developers are using Full Disk Access in ways that could put users at risk, exposing everything on their systems—including files, mail, messages, and even browsing history—without users’ full knowledge and understanding,” said Apple. “As AI agents become increasingly capable and autonomous, the risks associated with this level of access will grow substantially,” it added. Days after a journalist claimed that Meta’s Muse app on Mac read their private messages — a claim that Meta disputed — Apple announced that it’s introducing additional controls around a setting called “Full Disk Access” on macOS. The feature was designed to allow backups to function properly, but AI agents have now increased “the risks associated with this level of access,” Apple said. Apple’s statement comes shortly after Inc. columnist Jason Aten reported that Muse knew the content of his private messages — even though he claimed to have not given the AI agent permission. The report raised questions about the level of security and trust users have in desktop-based AI, which can control things on their systems and read their files and messages. The massive network of online discussion forums and social news aggregator has announced a timetable and details regarding its new antibot and data-scraping measures, which include discontinuing support for RSS feeds on Nov. 13. The platform, which boasts over 500 million monthly active users, first hinted at these changes in early August and outlined measures it said were to protect the site from spam and to make moderation easier. But subsequent updates left users with lingering questions about when restrictions on public APIs — the rules that allow interaction between software programs — and changes to the site’s Old Reddit version would take effect.
