Oscar Nominated Doc Filmmaker Maite Alberdi on Her Narrative Debut

Oscar Nominated Doc Filmmaker Maite Alberdi on Her Narrative Debut

Maite Alberdi made history when she became the first Chilean woman to be nominated for an Oscar thanks to her 2021 documentary The Mole Agent. She repeated the distinction earlier this year when her latest doc, The Eternal Memory, competed for an Academy Award in a stacked category that ultimately went to 20 Days in Mariupol. It was the latest distinction in a long list for Alberdi, who previously directed critically acclaimed feature docs like 2014’s La Once and 2016’s The Grown-Ups. But even with all of that success, Alberdi says people still ask her shocking questions about her résumé. “I just received a question, ‘When are you going to make a film?’ And it’s like, I make films,” Alberdi told The Hollywood Reporter recently during a sit-down interview at Xcaret in Riviera Maya, Mexico, ahead of the Platino Awards. The assumption is that documentaries are not “real films,” according to these ill-informed commenters. “I’ve already made five films, and I will continue making films.” Alberdi has long been inspired by real life because it …

Annual Member Survey Shows Record Levels of Approval

Annual Member Survey Shows Record Levels of Approval

The present incarnation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has received a ringing endorsement from its members, according to the results of an annual member survey shared by the Academy with its members on Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Eighty-seven percent of members have a positive feeling about the Academy and 84 percent of members gave the most recent Oscars telecast a positive rating, levels of approval never before attained in the history of the survey (which was previously conducted in 2020, 2022 and 2023, and which was conducted this year in the immediate aftermath of the Oscars). To some degree, these results may be reflective of a period of relative calm for the Academy after years of drama — from #OscarsSoWhite to Envelopegate to “The Slap Heard Round the World,” not to mention a global pandemic and an industry-wide strike. But beyond the general “feelings” questions, the data suggests that members are also satisfied with the specific operations and mission of the Academy. For instance, members seem aligned with the Academy’s …

The Hollywood Roosevelt Offers Look at Reimagined Suites

The Hollywood Roosevelt Offers Look at Reimagined Suites

The Hollywood Roosevelt is offering a look at its newly redesigned penthouse suites. The iconic hotel recently announced that the two rooms had undergone a reimaging thanks to Los Angeles-based interior designer Kevin Klein through his firm Kevin Klein Design. Both penthouses were named after famous residents of years past. The first — the Gable and Lombard penthouse — is named after Hollywood icons Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, who resided in the hotel in the 1930s. Gable, still considered one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and Lombard, a screwball comedy staple, were a true Hollywood power couple of their time. The couple spent just three years married before Lombard was killed in a 1942 plane crash at the age of 33. The second suite — the Johnny Grant apartment — is named after the host and television personality, who was a permanent resident of the hotel in the 1990s. Klein and his team worked to “maximize the common spaces and create an inviting atmosphere” for both travelers and local industry figures, according to a release. …

Trump hits Jimmy Kimmel again: ‘This guy’s even dumber than I thought’

Trump hits Jimmy Kimmel again: ‘This guy’s even dumber than I thought’

Former President Trump on Sunday took his latest swipe at late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, whose response to the former president’s criticism during the Oscars went viral on social media.  When asked on Fox News’s “MediaBuzz” about his long-time feud with Kimmel, Trump said, “Now look, look, Jimmy Kimmel is every is…every night, he hits me I guess, his ratings are terrible.” “I hear he hits me all the time, so I figured I’d hit him because I thought he was a lousy host,” he continued.  Trump and Kimmel’s long-time back-and-forth was brought to the surface last week when Kimmel responded on live television to the former president’s criticism of his hosting skills during the 96th annual Academy Awards.  The ABC late-night TV host said he wanted to share a “review” with the audience and later revealed Trump wrote the so-called review on Truth Social less than an hour before Kimmel read it on live television.  “Has there ever been a worse host than Jimmy Kimmel at the Oscars?” he said, reading Trump’s post to the audience. “His opening was …

The speech Jonathan Glazer could have given

The speech Jonathan Glazer could have given

(RNS) — On Oscar night on Sunday (March 10), director Jonathan Glazer, upon accepting the Academy Award for best international film for “The Zone of Interest,” chose to sharply criticize Israel, and by implication, Judaism itself. The prize was well-deserved; I wrote about the movie here. In his speech, he said that he and producer James Wilson “stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack in Gaza.” Much has been written about his words. My favorite critique comes from author Howard Jacobson, whose Booker Prize-winning novel “The Finkler Question” introduced us to a new Jewish movement — “ASHamed Jews,” who believe that “the world waits upon the finding of their consciences.” This is the speech that I wish Jonathan Glazer had given. I stand before you this evening, not only as the director of “The Zone of Interest,” and not only as an artist, and …

Johnny Depp Deletes Photoshopped Robert Downey Jr. Image After Oscars

Johnny Depp Deletes Photoshopped Robert Downey Jr. Image After Oscars

Johnny Depp wanted to congratulate his friend Robert Downey Jr. for his Oscar win Sunday night, but it didn’t necessarily go as planned. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor initially took to his Instagram Story to celebrate the Oppenheimer star by sharing a photo of the pair together. However, it turned out it wasn’t a real photo of them but rather a photoshopped picture. The real photograph taken in November 1988 featured Downey with his then-girlfriend Sarah Jessica Parker at a Young Artists Unite event in Los Angeles. But the photoshopped image replaced Parker with Depp and has actually circulated on social media and fan sites for years. The Alice in Wonderland actor quickly deleted the photo and later shared another (real) photo of him with the Iron Man star at the Golden Globes in 2011. “Let’s try this again… congrats to my dear friend,” Depp wrote in the caption. Downey took home the Oscar for best supporting actor for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The win marked a high point …

Why Michelle Pfeiffer Missed ‘Scarface’ Reunion With Al Pacino at 2024 Oscars

It was almost a Scarface reunion at the 96th Academy Awards! Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer were both previously announced as presenters on Hollywood’s biggest night, but the latter was a no-show during Sunday’s prestigious awards ceremony.  ET has learned that there was a matter that came up early last week that kept Pfeiffer on the East Coast and unable to attend the Oscars.  In her stead, the 83-year-old actor hit the stage solo as he presented the award for Best Picture to Oppenheimer. Where to Buy John Cena’s Birkenstocks From the 2024 Oscars

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, The Hollywood Reporter may receive an affiliate commission. John Cena and his Birks made a case for the necessity of costume designers, stylists, his fitness trainer and comedic timing at the 2024 Oscars. Nodding to streaker Robert Opel at the 1974 Academy Awards, Jimmy Kimmel kicked off the best costume design award presentation by asking, “Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today? Wouldn’t that be crazy?” Cue the Argylle star, who had a change of heart about his birthday suit bit: “I don’t want to do the streaker bit anymore,” Cena said. “You should feel ashamed right now for suggesting such a tasteless idea.” John Cena Frank Micelotta/Disney via Getty Images After some banter (“The male body is not a joke,” said Cena, to which Kimmel replied, “Mine is”), the WWE star eventually emerged from backstage wearing only the winner’s envelope — and a pair of Birkenstock Arizona sandals.
