I ran Nato. Putin’s nuclear threat is real, but this is how to stop him

I ran Nato. Putin’s nuclear threat is real, but this is how to stop him

A few months into Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the war had become so dangerous that Jens Stoltenberg went to bed fearing he would be woken by these horrifying words: Vladimir Putin has launched a nuclear attack. As secretary general of Nato, it would have been his job to consult the US President, the UK prime minister and other allied leaders to agree a collective response.  The idea of nuclear conflict had seemed unthinkable since the end of the Cold War. But based on intelligence Nato received in autumn 2022, it was genuinely “an option that was considered” by the Kremlin, says Stoltenberg. Official assessments at the time showed that the likelihood of a nuclear weapon being used rose to between 10 and 25 per cent. Putin was feeling more desperate as Ukraine was pushing back its invaders and Nato was providing weapons. The concern was over Putin using “tactical” nuclear weapons. They are designed to eliminate troops on a battlefield, rather than destroy whole cities. But they remain devastating – capable of annihilating thousands of people instantly and unleashing radiation that could kill many others in following years. “Nato sent a very strong message,” says Stoltenberg. “The …

Video. Yemen: Tanks fire as fighting erupts on the outskirts of Taiz

Yemeni government forces and allied Popular Resistance fighters clashed with Houthi fighters on the western outskirts of Taiz on Wednesday, 21 October, near the city’s old airport and Jabal Han mountain. The internationally recognised government said its forces repelled the attack, while reporting air strikes on Houthi positions, vehicles and a missile launchpad west, south and east of the city. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Footage showed a government tank firing towards Houthi positions as gunfire echoed across the area. The fighting comes as Taiz, Yemen’s third-largest city, faces mounting pressure from Houthi forces, which have largely encircled it and cut key supply routes, including the main road to Aden, the interim capital of the internationally recognised government. The restrictions have also disrupted access to the city’s main landfill, leaving rubbish to pile up along major streets. Sanitation workers say they can no longer reach the dumping site because of the clashes and have resorted to burning waste in the streets. Footage showed waste burning beside busy roads, thick smoke rising over neighbourhoods and goats feeding among the …

“Polished But Rough”: First Major Review Casts Doubt On Foldable iPhone Duo’s Mass Adoption

Tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, who has more than 21 million subscribers, offered a mixed first take on Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo ahead of its Friday release, describing the device as “very polished around the edges, but kind of rough in the middle.” Brownlee’s review of Apple’s first foldable iPhone may present a hurdle to adoption. At more than $2,000, the Duo’s first-generation shortcomings could make buyers reluctant to pay the hefty premium, prompting some to wait for a second generation. “It’s $2,000 to get an iPad mini that can fit in your pocket. 120 Hz iPad Mini OLED fits in your pocket. Have you ever wanted that? They made it. They did it. Great. This is the first generation. It’s made for you. But also, yeah, it is it is polished but rough,” Brownlee noted. The Duo is slightly thicker and heavier than the latest Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, a difference Brownlee said “makes a big difference in daily use.” After testing the Duo for a week, he said, “you would be happy if it …

LeBron James talks smack with Knicks fans in victorious 76ers debut

Philadelphia 76ers forward LeBron James yells during the second half of an NBA basketball game against the New York Knicks Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, in New York. Frank Franklin II/AP hide caption toggle caption i Frank Franklin II/AP NEW YORK — LeBron James got the business from Knicks fans still gloating and riding an emotional high from an NBA championship banner celebration. As he stepped to the free-throw line for the Philadelphia 76ers early in Tuesday night’s season opener, Knicks fans erupted toward James with chants of “We don’t want you! We don’t want you!” Such a rude reception from New Yorkers to one of the city’s newest residents. The shouts of rejection came in part because there was a plausible scenario under which James would have opened the season at Madison Square Garden in a Knicks uniform. James and his agent, Rich Paul, had said the Knicks would have been James’ first choice in free agency had New York not won its first NBA championship since 1973 last season. Knicks fans said, we’re good. …

Elon Musk ‘ordered Starlink shutdown’ which Zelensky slammed as ‘betrayal’ | World | News

The Ukrainian leader claimed that Mr Trump and ally Elon Musk deliberately blocked his country’s access to Starlink overnight on October 14 after the military faced slowdowns in speed. Mr Zelensky said that his people could die if the unrestrictive service was not restored. The satellite internet service is operated by SpaceX, Mr Musk’s aerospace company. It provides high-speed broadband globally and is used by Ukraine for military communications and drone operations. An informal investigation inside the White House was conducted and there was confusion about who ordered the slowdown. It has now been revealed that Mr Musk capped the speeds at which Ukrainian hardware could stay connected to the satellite-based network, according to reports by the Wall Street Journal. This left some offensive drones and interceptor drones practically useless. The incident followed comments by the Trump administration and Mr Musk that were considered hostile to Ukraine – Kyiv immediately suspected the order came either from the president or Mr Musk. Mr Trump and Mr Musk’s animosity toward the Ukrainian leader has grown in recent …

Storm Austen forecast to hit southern UK

The first named storm of the season, Austen, is expected to bring gusts of up to 60mph to southern areas of the UK at the end of the week, forecasters said. While there would be spells of rain and showers for many on Tuesday and Wednesday, by Thursday, Storm Austen would be approaching the south-west of the UK, the Met Office said. An area of low pressure in the Atlantic would deepen rapidly as it was invigorated by the jet stream, the forecaster added. Parts of the south coast as far east as Brighton were also expected to be affected. The Met Office deputy chief forecaster, Tom Crabtree, said: “While the exact track and position of Storm Austen is still being determined, …

Alberta voters reject move toward separation from Canada in referendum

Alberta voters reject move toward separation from Canada in referendum

Voters in Canada’s oil-rich province of Alberta have rejected a proposal to begin a process toward independence, results showed early Tuesday, delivering a victory for Prime Minister Mark Carney and supporters of Canadian unity amid President Trump’s trade war and annexation threats. The vote was not a direct referendum on independence but would have set oil-rich Alberta on a path toward a future vote on separation from Canada. With more than 1 million votes counted, about 76% supported remaining in Canada, compared with 23% who backed beginning a process that could lead to separation. “We are a solid country that’s united from coast to coast to coast,” Thomas Lukaszuk, a former Alberta deputy premier who led the Forever Canadian campaign against separation, told supporters. Results were delayed after late openings forced more than 100 polling stations to extend voting hours Monday. More than 1.35 million Albertans, or 43% of eligible voters, cast advance or special ballots. Albertans were deciding whether to remain in Canada or begin a legal process that could have led to a …
