LeBron James talks smack with Knicks fans in victorious 76ers debut

Philadelphia 76ers forward LeBron James yells during the second half of an NBA basketball game against the New York Knicks Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, in New York. Frank Franklin II/AP hide caption toggle caption i Frank Franklin II/AP NEW YORK — LeBron James got the business from Knicks fans still gloating and riding an emotional high from an NBA championship banner celebration. As he stepped to the free-throw line for the Philadelphia 76ers early in Tuesday night’s season opener, Knicks fans erupted toward James with chants of “We don’t want you! We don’t want you!” Such a rude reception from New Yorkers to one of the city’s newest residents. The shouts of rejection came in part because there was a plausible scenario under which James would have opened the season at Madison Square Garden in a Knicks uniform. James and his agent, Rich Paul, had said the Knicks would have been James’ first choice in free agency had New York not won its first NBA championship since 1973 last season. Knicks fans said, we’re good. …

Elon Musk ‘ordered Starlink shutdown’ which Zelensky slammed as ‘betrayal’ | World | News

The Ukrainian leader claimed that Mr Trump and ally Elon Musk deliberately blocked his country’s access to Starlink overnight on October 14 after the military faced slowdowns in speed. Mr Zelensky said that his people could die if the unrestrictive service was not restored. The satellite internet service is operated by SpaceX, Mr Musk’s aerospace company. It provides high-speed broadband globally and is used by Ukraine for military communications and drone operations. An informal investigation inside the White House was conducted and there was confusion about who ordered the slowdown. It has now been revealed that Mr Musk capped the speeds at which Ukrainian hardware could stay connected to the satellite-based network, according to reports by the Wall Street Journal. This left some offensive drones and interceptor drones practically useless. The incident followed comments by the Trump administration and Mr Musk that were considered hostile to Ukraine – Kyiv immediately suspected the order came either from the president or Mr Musk. Mr Trump and Mr Musk’s animosity toward the Ukrainian leader has grown in recent …

Alberta voters reject move toward separation from Canada in referendum

Alberta voters reject move toward separation from Canada in referendum

Voters in Canada’s oil-rich province of Alberta have rejected a proposal to begin a process toward independence, results showed early Tuesday, delivering a victory for Prime Minister Mark Carney and supporters of Canadian unity amid President Trump’s trade war and annexation threats. The vote was not a direct referendum on independence but would have set oil-rich Alberta on a path toward a future vote on separation from Canada. With more than 1 million votes counted, about 76% supported remaining in Canada, compared with 23% who backed beginning a process that could lead to separation. “We are a solid country that’s united from coast to coast to coast,” Thomas Lukaszuk, a former Alberta deputy premier who led the Forever Canadian campaign against separation, told supporters. Results were delayed after late openings forced more than 100 polling stations to extend voting hours Monday. More than 1.35 million Albertans, or 43% of eligible voters, cast advance or special ballots. Albertans were deciding whether to remain in Canada or begin a legal process that could have led to a …

Communism, Berlin Edition: Adler Bonds Crash To Record Low As Left Coalition Plans To Socialize 152,000 Apartments

Five years after Berliners voted to expropriate their landlords, the German capital finally has a government willing to do it. On Saturday, Die Linke, the Greens and the SPD presented the 30-page exploratory paper that will underpin their coalition agreement for the next Berlin Senate, and buried among the usual promises sits a plan to socialize, under Article 15 of the German constitution, every apartment a private landlord owns in Berlin above the first 10,000. The compensation for this act of municipal generosity: a hard cap of €16 billion which works out to about €105K per unit, or 58% of book value… and even that cap is conditional on “fiscal sustainability.” The bond market did the rest: Adler Group‘s 10% notes due 2029 plunged 20 points on Monday to a record low around 59 cents on the euro (they dropped as 53 earlier in the session), as creditors scrambled to price in the possibility that 43% of Adler’s yielding Berlin portfolio is about to be bought by the state at a 42% to 48% discount …

Parents on benefits to get £736 extra per child after lifting of cap by April

Parents on benefits to get £736 extra per child after lifting of cap by April

A two-child limit on childcare benefits will be lifted by next April to help poorer families into work, The i Paper can reveal. Families on universal credit can claim back 85 per cent of their childcare costs while they work – but the amount is currently capped at £1,071 for one child or £1,836 per month for two or more children. The change means families will get an extra £736 for each additional child. In the last Budget, the Government announced it would increase this support for larger families – but the timeline had not been confirmed. The uplift will happen before the end of the 2026-27 financial year “subject to the necessary delivery and legislative changes”, according to a Government source. A Department for Work and Pensions spokesperson told The i Paper: “By the end of this financial year, universal credit childcare support will change so larger families are not penalised for moving into work.” Ruth Talbot, senior policy and research manager at the Save the Children charity, said parents with three young children …

Vinted blocks French looters listing stolen goods for sale

Vinted says it has removed listings of items believed to have been looted from shops during the ongoing riots in France. The second hand re-selling platform said following the weekend’s disorder it had “taken immediate action to identify and remove listings linked to looting”. Shops across several French cities were broken into and ransacked during the outbreak of riots over the weekend. “The sale of stolen goods, or soliciting them, is strictly prohibited on Vinted, and we have zero tolerance for it,” a spokesperson for the company said. Widespread looting was reported across Paris, Marseille and Lille, as well as other areas after protests against the cost of living and public spending turned into riots, leading to the arrests of at least 1,200 people. More than 2,000 businesses were directly impacted by the weekend’s violence, according to the head of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CCI). Alain Di Crescenzo told France’s broadcaster RTL that the riots led to hundreds of millions of euros worth of damage. Groups of rioters, some wearing masks and balaclavas, …

Macron increasingly isolated amid unrest across France

Macron increasingly isolated amid unrest across France

With only months left in his presidency, Emmanuel Macron faces mounting social unrest and political criticism that could ultimately shape his legacy. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT After student protests over living conditions erupted into violence last Saturday, Macron has come under fire from across the political spectrum over his handling of the security situation and his response to grievances over education, the cost of living and inflation. The unrest comes as France grapples with record public debt, soaring fuel prices and escalating international conflicts. The Yellow Vests movement, which has helped coordinate the protests, announced a “second act” on Monday, with further demonstrations planned for next weekend. Addressing the nation, Macron condemned violence and announced new operational procedures for security forces. The Paris prosecutor’s office reported 855 arrests linked to the demonstrations, with 557 people placed in police custody, 433 of whom were adults, representing 78% of those detained. “Looking at these images, we have all asked ourselves: What was going through their minds? How can French people do this to France?” Macron said. “Nothing justifies it, …

Russians locked out of bank accounts as Ukraine hits Yandex data centers

Another driver, Valery from Krasnodar, had been on the job for only a few months, having previously worked at a packing center for Wildberries, Russia’s retail giant, whose warehouse was attacked by Ukrainian drones in July. When the Yandex outages started, he said, the taxi app would show error messages or even send several cars for the same customer. While that has been largely resolved, said Valery, 24, the biggest issue for him was that he could not withdraw the money that he had already earned with Yandex. “If I can’t access my pay in another week or two, I will start looking for another job,” he said. In addition to Yandex, the data centers of Russia’s biggest bank, Sberbank, and the tech giant VK have also been targeted in recent days. The chaos is no accident, analysts say. “Ukraine’s campaign from the start has had as one of its objectives bringing home to ordinary Russians the fact that they are at war and this involves consequences,” Keir Giles, an associate fellow at Chatham House, …
