The world’s favorite Finnish animated character has become the latest face of the franchised-character-to-luxury pipeline, and we love to see it. That’s right, illustrator Tove Jansson’s Moomin got the Bottega Veneta leather treatment — and it’s actually good? I’m not too shocked because it’s Bottega, a luxury brand known for leathercraft, but the most pleasant surprise lies in how organic Moomin Bottega actually feels, something that doesn’t always happen with character-luxury crossovers.
The capsule feels a little left-field coming from Bottega, not a luxury brand you expect to link up with cartoon-y franchises. But, the Bottega-taste of it all comes from a balance between items literally stamped with Moomin comics and more clever pieces like the red-and-white striped Intrecciato-woven Andiamo and Campana handbags, which mimic Moomin’s striped apron.
There are also artisanally crafted Intrecciato Moomin character charms, a delicious method of making what would otherwise feel like a cutesy Daiso find into a mini luxury item. (It’s all available November 11 in Japan, where Moomin is a bonafide celebrity, and November 18 rest of world.)
Other luxury houses have previously run franchise-first plays to great success. LOEWE did Studio Ghibli in 2021, Balenciaga did Hello Kitty in 2020 (and they’re actually doing another Japan-exclusive collab…) Collaborations like these and Bottega Veneta’s Moomin collection are essentially fanboy grails that tap into a different demographic than a Richard Prince Louis Vuitton while still activating the human urge to collect. These leather Moomins demonstrate that there’s not so much separating an art-world aficionado and an action-figure collector, at least in the world of luxury. Everyone loves a specialty product that speaks to them!
I bet my bottom dollar that there are people — probably with very deep pockets — who bought Studio Ghibli Puzzle bags though they still pronounce LOEWE like “low.” And you can bet Bottega Moomin will do similar numbers. That’s the power of a good franchise crossover, especially when the star is as cute as Moomin.
