Early screen time not a cause of autism, study concludes

Early screen time not a cause of autism, study concludes

A new study published in JAMA Pediatrics investigated whether screen time in early childhood increases the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) later in life. While initial analyses suggested a positive association between early screen time and ASD, the researchers found this link disappeared after accounting for socioeconomic factors. ASD is a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts socially, and processes information. It is called a “spectrum” because it encompasses a wide range of abilities and challenges, varying greatly from person to person. Some individuals with autism may have difficulty with speech and understanding social cues, while others may excel in specific skills like memory or pattern recognition. Autism is typically diagnosed in early childhood, and while its exact causes are not fully understood, a combination of genetic and environmental factors is believed to contribute. The researchers conducted the study to explore whether behaviors like early screen time exposure could influence the development of ASD. Early childhood is a critical period for cognitive and social development, making it important to understand how …

The 15 Shows We’re Most Looking Forward to in 2025

The 15 Shows We’re Most Looking Forward to in 2025

US release date: January 9, Max The White Lotus While Jennifer Coolidge will most definitely be missed, Mike White has assembled yet another stacked cast for Season 3 of The White Lotus, including HBO’s unofficial king, Walton Goggins. Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Aimee Lou Wood, Leslie Bibb, Michelle Monaghan, Sam Nivola, Jason Isaacs, and Nicholas Duvernay are among the other series newcomers, while Natasha Rothwell—who played spa manager Brenda in Season 1—will be returning. No firm details have been released, but expect death to be on the menu. US release date: February 16, HBO Daredevil: Born Again Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) has been through a lot in the past decade: a Netflix series that was unceremoniously canceled after three seasons; a reboot series at Disney that then got a major reboot of its own after several episodes had already been shot; and a writers strike that delayed the project even further. Good thing this guy has got superpowers, and that Cox has kept busy keeping his Daredevil in the conversation with a cameo in Spider-Man: …

Changing tides for tech businesses as the ESPR comes into force

Changing tides for tech businesses as the ESPR comes into force

Lars Rensing, CEO of Digital Product Passport solutions provider Protokol, discusses the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation and how this will impact tech businesses. When we consider the modern consumer, it is no surprise that waste is becoming an increasing strain on our planet. As technology continues to advance at such a staggering rate, our desire to possess the latest gadgets is having major knock-on effects on the environment and the amount of waste we send to landfills. To focus on technology companies and their role in this story, e-waste is the most prominent issue that must be addressed. To put these issues concerning electronic waste into perspective: “e-waste remains one of the fastest-growing solid waste streams in the world… with less than a quarter of e-waste produced globally in 2022 being known to be formally recycled.” Given the staggering statistics above, it’s unsurprising that the European Union has been implementing a range of initiatives to tackle such global issues. Ultimately, with the goal of supporting greater circularity and championing more sustainable business practices. …

Ashley Parker and Michael Scherer Join The Atlantic

Ashley Parker and Michael Scherer Join The Atlantic

Dear everyone, I’m writing to share the happy news that two of Washington’s most accomplished and authoritative reporters, Ashley Parker and Michael Scherer, are joining The Atlantic as part of our effort to deepen our coverage of the incoming administration, and of America’s tumultuous politics more generally. Ashley and Michael, who both come to us from The Washington Post, have distinguished themselves as scoop-driven stylists—they are both relentless, well-sourced reporters with a keen sense of language and narrative, and a deep belief in the importance of accountability journalism. They will make great additions to our already excellent politics team. As we move into 2025, it is vitally important for us to cover Washington—the implementation of the MAGA agenda; the role of money (foreign and domestic) in our politics; the future of the Democratic Party—in the most comprehensive and rigorous way possible, and Ashley and Michael will play important roles in helping us meet our goals.   Ashley, the Post’s senior national political correspondent, is a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner who covered Donald Trump’s first term, and …

Adobe’s Latest Price Hike Means It’s Time to Switch to Alternatives

Adobe’s Latest Price Hike Means It’s Time to Switch to Alternatives

Adobe is known for offering some of the best creative software available, but are its non-transparent price increases hitting the final straw for users? Adobe Increased Its Photography Plan’s Price In an article from Adobe at the end of 2024 about innovations in photography and photo-editing software, it subtly mentioned that Adobe’s Photography Plan—which includes both Photoshop and Lightroom as a package—will severely change in price and availability from January 25th 2025. Giving users just over one calendar month to figure out their new plan for Creative Cloud payment choices, the statement released on December 10th buried the lede on the information, making it difficult and confusing to find or understand the news. Adobe already has a negative reputation for its frustrating payment and subscription options—and sadness for long-term users who can no longer outright own their Adobe products. Adobe made its first major price change in years. Luckily, it only applies to the Photography plan, with a more subtle—two dollar per month—price change to Lightroom’s solo plan. The solo Photoshop plan remains unchanged. Adobe’s …

A Journey Through a Shattered America

A Journey Through a Shattered America

In Cary Groner’s latest novel “The Way,” we journey through a transformed American landscape where civilization has crumbled, leaving behind a world both familiar and startlingly alien. The story follows Will Collins, a 52-year-old caretaker of a Buddhist monastery in Colorado, as he embarks on a perilous cross-country journey to deliver a potential cure for a mysterious ailment known as Disease X to California. A Changed World Groner paints a vivid picture of an America fourteen years after “Mayhem”—a cascade of catastrophes including a devastating bird flu pandemic, limited nuclear exchanges, and the collapse of civilization. In this new reality, most humans over forty have perished, leaving behind a world where teenagers run towns, armed militias control territories, and escaped zoo animals roam freely. The author’s background as a science journalist shines through in his detailed and scientifically plausible worldbuilding. Characters That Breathe Life Into the Wasteland What sets “The Way” by Cary Groner apart from typical post-apocalyptic fiction is its rich character development and the unusual companions who join Will on his journey: Peau, …

During the “Best Books of the Year” season, I’ve been going through and picking out which queer books get featured on the biggest lists. My plan was to mash all this information together into a Frankensteined spreadsheet and then share with you the queer books included on the most “best of” lists. Luckily, I was saved a step, because LitHub already made an Ultimate Best Books of 2024 List that includes best-of lists from 39 outlets. I just went through that and pulled out the queer books. I am limited to the books I recognize, so please let me know if I missed any! As far as I could tell, though, here are the nine queer books mentioned on the most Best Books of 2024 lists, from horror graphic novels to literary fiction to historical sports romance to poetry, biography, fantasy, and more. If you’ve been paying attention to the best of lists at all, I bet you …
