You need to find out the spiritual gift the Holy Spirit has given you

Woman holding a gift

I remember very clearly the day, over 40 years ago now, when the Holy Spirit revealed what spiritual gift he had given me. My wife and I were living in a small, 600-square-foot, orange-colored home with a flat roof. It was our first home.

I was watching an NHL hockey playoff game on a small TV that I had propped up on our kitchen counter. I can’t remember who was playing, but as I was watching the game, the Holy Spirit quickened one particular player to me and I got this distinct impression that he was going to score on his own goal.

A few minutes later, this is exactly what happened.

Now, scoring on one’s own goal can easily happen in a hockey game when an opposing player takes a shot and the puck deflects off a defending player into the net.

But this is not what happened in this case, the defensive player was actually trying to clear the puck from in front of his team’s goalie, and so misfired the puck that it went into his own net. His goalie didn’t have a chance.

I remember how struck and even surprised I was by this revelation. The Holy Spirit used this to catch my attention, revealing to me that I had been given a supernatural spiritual gift.

I believe the Holy Spirit does this for all believers. He wants you to know that He has given you a supernatural gift and which one it is, and we need to be attuned to the clues that the Holy Spirit will drop.

This includes everyone!

When discussing spiritual gifts that the Holy Spirit has bestowed on the church, Paul writes, “There are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:6-7).

But notice specifically how Paul writes this. First, he says that the Holy Spirit has empowered “everyone” with a spiritual gift. And then to make sure we are absolutely clear, he doubles down on this and says “each” person has been given a manifestation or spiritual gift.

Paul provides a partial list of what these gifts can include in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11: word of knowledge, gift of faith, gifts (note plural) of healing, working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of Spirits, gift of tongues, and interpretation of tongues

If you are a member of the church and have been baptized in the Holy Spirit, then you have a spiritual gift.

Even if you say I don’t have one, you actually do, and I suspect that the Holy Spirit has been subtly trying to reveal it to you.

But we notice in that verse that the Holy Spirit gives these gifts for the ‘common good.’ The gift is not intended for your personal benefit, it is for the benefit of the whole church. It is so you can minister to others.

The only exception to this rule is when the Holy Spirit is trying to catch your attention and train you in the gift, He has given, but even in this instance it is ultimately done for the benefit of others.

In an article for Charisma News, Curt Landry writes how God used a spiritual gift to minister to a person that he was sitting across from at a prayer meeting:

Years ago, I was meeting with a group of people to pray. Across from me a man was just taking his seat. Right when he was sitting down, I saw, in the most subtle way (I could have easily missed it), a hammer coming down on his head. It was just a picture in my mind, not a great, overwhelming experience. So I said to him, “You know, I just saw a hammer coming down on your head.”

“I just found out today that I am getting sued,” he replied.

The Lord had given me a prophetic word to show this man that He was with him. The Lord wanted him to know that He was going to see him through this trial and everything was going to be all right.

Beloved, the Lord desires to speak to you through prophecy, dreams and visions. The question is, are you paying attention to God’s subtle promptings, to that small quiet voice? I want to encourage you to begin listening and looking for prophetic communications from the Holy Spirit, and then use His words to grow in your walk and to speak life to those in need.

So discover your gift and start using it.
