Timex Is About to Sell a Watch for Just $1

Timex Is About to Sell a Watch for Just

The limited-edition Waterbury is designed in the style of vintage pocket watches. It’s consists of a 40-mm stainless steel case housing a glossy “ice white” dial with black, 3D lacquered Roman-numeral indices, an outer railroad minute track, and a set of lumed cathedral hands. The watch is powered by a quartz movement and features a handy day-date display at 3 o’clock. The original Yankee pocket watch ads promised “The correct time for little money.” A quartz wristwatch is much better positioned to make good on that promise. The caseback features a special commemorative design to celebrate the anniversary, while the watch is finished with a black leather strap with a steel pin buckle.

Sure, the Waterbury isn’t a beautifully finished Patek Philippe, a mind-boggling Moser, or a highly collectible vintage Rolex. But it will be one dollar, which is as good a selling point as any. Timex has long been proof that you can have just as much fun in the watch world for hardly any money at all. Just think about the brand’s sub-$200, hand-wound Marlin dress watch introduced just a few years back. The design helped introduce young, newbie watch buyers to the wonders of mechanical watchmaking with a piece they could comfortably afford and that looks great. Who can argue with that?

Dressy and good-looking, the Waterbury is a perfect, entry-level dress or everyday watch at its list price, but it’s an absolute no-brainer at $1. It should help introduce another group of green collectors to the joy of watches.
