Earth wouldn’t have ice caps without eroding rocks and quiet volcanoes

Antarctic ice on 1 Jan 2024 NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio Earth’s climate isn’t easy to cool down – especially if you want it cold enough for ice caps to form. According to a model of the geological forces shaping the climate over the past 420 million years, reaching such “ice house” temperatures requires a combination of rapid rock erosion removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and less CO2-releasing volcanic activity. Despite record high temperatures on brief human timescales today, Earth’s climate is currently colder than usual. “When you look back in the geological past and you try to… Source link

The volunteer scheme taking first-timers to Glastonbury 2024: ‘We’re reaching people who wouldn’t get to go’ | Glastonbury on The Nation’s Network

Glastonbury Festival means many different things to the 210,000 people who turn up in Pilton, Somerset, for five days at the end of June. There’s the Pyramid stage lot, hyped to secure their front-of-crowd spot for the headline acts; and the ravers who shake off the stresses of regular life on the dancefloor up in Block9. There’s the blissed-out crowd watching the sunrise from the Stone Circle; the culture vultures making a beeline to hear talks from artists and other great thinkers; or those who crave peace and healing who head straight to the Green Fields. It’s the immense size and scope of this creative wonderland that makes it one of the country’s most loved events – and why the £355 tickets always sell out in record time. However, this year, a group of festival first-timers will get to take in the wonder and spectacle of Glastonbury as volunteers and have their expenses covered. The festival – run by Michael Eavis and his daughter, Emily Eavis – has set up a volunteer scheme, with Vodafone …

You wouldn’t believe how difficult it is to buy sperm | Life and style

You wouldn’t believe how difficult it is to buy sperm | Life and style

One night in September 2022, like a kid sticking my finger into the flame of a candle, I Googled “how to buy sperm”. I’d been thinking about it since splitting with a partner a year earlier. I was 37, and had started wondering if continuing on the “traditional” path – meeting someone, getting to know them well enough to decide to have children together, attempting to get pregnant – might cost me the chance to have kids. As much as I’ve always wanted to be a mom, I never felt the desire to be pregnant; I felt wary of the physical toll of it. I’d looked into adopting, but it’s hugely cost-prohibitive (friends had been trying for two years; they’d have 48 hours notice and would pay $40,000 if selected). Fostering was also out of the question because the state of New York requires prospective parents to live in a two-bedroom home, which I don’t have. I’d pursue these options if need be, but hoped for a less complicated path. Still, I didn’t feel pressure …

I Almost Died Giving Birth But My Husband Wouldn’t Drive Me To The Hospital — “Too Much Blood”

I Almost Died Giving Birth But My Husband Wouldn’t Drive Me To The Hospital — “Too Much Blood”

The paramedics arrived relatively quickly. Once in the ambulance, they started two IVs, one in each arm, and inclined the stretcher 60 degrees with my feet in the air. They were trying to control the bleeding. My blood pressure was 75/42. EMS called the hospital to give them an update. When we arrived, the labor/delivery nurses and doctors were waiting at the door. They handed me papers to sign, authorizing treatment and a C-section if necessary. They got me into a room and checked my cervix. I was 9 centimeters dilated and almost ready to push. They estimated that I lost over 1,000cc of blood. The doctor ordered an ultrasound and discovered I had a placental abruption, which occurs when the placenta separates from the inner wall of the uterus before birth. Placental abruption can deprive the baby of oxygen and nutrients and cause heavy bleeding in the mother. In some cases, early delivery is needed. During the ultrasound, Dr. Brown saw Olivia’s heart beating, and she did not appear distressed. He gave me two …

A man tried to shoot a pastor during a church service but his gun wouldn’t fire, state police say

(AP) – A man who tried to shoot a pastor during a service at a Pennsylvania church because “God told him to do it” was thwarted when his gun didn’t fire and he was tackled by a congregant, authorities said. The chaos at the Jesus’ Dwelling Place Church in North Braddock took place Sunday while the service was being livestreamed, state police said in a news release. Bernard J. Polite, 26, of Braddock entered the church just after 1 p.m. and walked toward the front while the Rev. Glenn Germany was giving a sermon, police said. The pastor told WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh that Polite smiled at him and they made eye contact just before Polite pointed the gun at him. Germany then ducked out of the way as a male congregant tackled Polite. Germany and the congregant then worked together to wrest the gun away from Polite, who was soon subdued and held until state troopers arrived. Polite said “God told me to do it” and that he planned to shoot Germany and “wait to …

‘You wouldn’t eat her – she’s one of the family’: meet Jill, Australia’s heaviest oyster | Australia news

Every so often, oyster farmer Bernie Connell comes across an unusually large specimen. He separates it from the rest of his crop, names it and lowers it back into the Clyde River at Batemans Bay, where he lets “tender love and care and good water” do the rest. Now almost 10 years old, Jill – an oyster that caught his eye nine years ago – weighs 3.01kg. That makes Jill Australia’s – and potentially the world’s – heaviest oyster, after it beat Big Boppa, at 2.44kg, and Keithy, 2.4kg, to win the title at Australia’s biggest oyster competition at the Narooma oyster festival on the New South Wales south coast on Saturday. “It was never in doubt,” laughs Connell, who has farmed oysters for 55 years and whose family has been in the business for 95 years. “But we never weighed her [beforehand]. The bloody scales were out of batteries.” The competition drew eight entries from farms on the nearby Clyde and Shoalhaven river estuaries. To be eligible, oysters must be solo with no “piggyback” …

Trump Says He Wouldn’t Stop States From Tracking Individual Pregnancies So They Can Prosecute People Caught Getting Abortions

Trump Says He Wouldn’t Stop States From Tracking Individual Pregnancies So They Can Prosecute People Caught Getting Abortions

Many people are aware that a second term for Donald Trump would be unspeakably bad, but if you’re looking for more specifics on exactly how bad, then today’s your lucky day. In an interview with Time magazine published on Tuesday, the former president went into detail on the dystopian hell we can expect from him—which could potentially include more federal abortion restrictions as well as state laws allowing the government to track individual women’s pregnancies so that anyone who violates abortion laws can be punished. Speaking to Time’s Eric Cortellessa about the 20 states that have enacted partial or total abortion bans, Trump said the federal government should not get involved, even if said states decide to take the Orwellian step of monitoring pregnancies in order to ensure no one runs afoul of the law and prosecute those who do. “I think they might do that,” Trump said of the Handmaid’s Tale–esque prospect. Asked if he was comfortable with states criminally charging women who obtain abortions after the law allows, he very notably did not …

Cher said she wouldn’t want to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Now she’s being inducted

Cher said she wouldn’t want to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Now she’s being inducted

Cher is apparently backtracking on comments she made previously, now that it’s been announced that she would be among the 2024 inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  During an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” in December to promote her then-new Christmas single, “DJ Play a Christmas Song,” the singer noted how she had been snubbed even though her seven-decade-long career was packed with consistent, chart-topping hits. While Cher acknowledged that the Rolling Stones shared similar accolades, she was also quick to jest at how “It took four of them to be one of me.” “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars,” Cher told Clarkson at the time of the Cleveland, Ohio, institution. “I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” As of Sunday, however, Cher’s name has been added to a long list of musical greats in being entered into the hall on Oct. 19. Among the other inductees for the performer category are Mary J. Blige, the Dave …

The UK’s giant underground ‘city’ where 500 people work but you wouldn’t know it’s there | UK | News

Britain’s deepest mine is found at Boulby, in between Saltburn-on-Sea and Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast. It is 4,593ft beneath the ground and takes six minutes to descend to the bottom of. Within the mine, which has been open since 1968, there are more than 620 miles worth of tunnels that have been excavated. Miners down the pit are looking for potash and salt seams deposited after the evaporation of the ancient Zechstein Sea around 250 million years ago. However, it’s not just mining that goes on down there. The site is also an underground science hub and has been since the 1990s. The Boulby Underground Laboratory is around 3068ft beneath the surface and the rock above the lab means that natural cosmic rays are reduced by a factor of a million compared to the outside world. In these conditions scientists are able to better conduct research. For example, the lab has been used to search for Dark Matter – otherwise known as the ‘missing mass in the universe’ – and is a world-leading …
